Aqualyx Fat Dissolving Injections: A Doctor's Guide to Treating Stubborn Fat

WF The Wellface Team Published 13 October 2023 · 10 min read

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with a pocket of fat that simply will not respond. You eat sensibly, you train, the scales move in the right direction, and yet one small area stays exactly where it is. A little roll under the bra strap. The soft curve beneath the chin. The stubborn bit on the outer thighs that seems immune to everything. For patients in exactly this position, Aqualyx can be a genuinely useful option.

In a recent reel for Wellface, Dr Amina Albeyatti walked through what Aqualyx actually does, who it suits and what the recovery involves. Her message was refreshingly honest. This is not liposuction, it is not a shortcut for last minute events, and it works best when the right patient is treated for the right reason. That kind of candour is exactly what you want before any body contouring treatment.

Below we have expanded on what Dr Amina covered, with a fuller look at how the injections work, what a session feels like, the timeline for results and how Aqualyx compares to the other options we offer across our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon clinics.

What Aqualyx actually is

Aqualyx is an injectable fat dissolving treatment. The active ingredient belongs to a family of compounds based on deoxycholic acid, a substance the body already produces to help break down dietary fat. When it is injected directly into a localised pocket of fat, it disrupts the walls of the fat cells in that area. Those cells break down, their contents are released, and the body then clears the debris away naturally through its own metabolic and lymphatic processes over the following weeks.

The important word there is localised. Aqualyx is designed for superficial, defined areas of fat rather than general weight loss across the whole body. As Dr Amina puts it, it is ideal for the patient who is doing the right things with diet and exercise but is left with a stubborn area that just will not shift. It is a contouring tool, a way of refining a shape, not a method for dropping several stones.

Once fat cells are destroyed in a treated area, they are gone. That said, the remaining fat cells can still enlarge if your weight increases significantly, so results are best maintained alongside a stable weight and a reasonable lifestyle. This is something we talk through properly at consultation, because managing expectations is half the work of a good outcome.

Which areas can be treated

Aqualyx is versatile and can be used on a range of small to medium fat deposits. Common areas include the double chin and jawline, the abdomen and the little roll around the waist, the flanks or love handles, the inner and outer thighs, the knees, the upper arms and the area around the bra line and back. Not every area suits every patient, and the amount of product and number of sessions needed will vary depending on the site and how much fat is present.

Because the treatment relies on your body clearing away the broken down fat, larger or deeper deposits are generally not appropriate and are better addressed by other means. This is precisely why an in person assessment matters so much.

Who is a good candidate

The best candidate for Aqualyx is someone at or near a stable, healthy weight who has one or two specific areas of stubborn fat they would like to refine. Dr Amina describes it well in her reel: this is for the patient aiming to lose the equivalent of one or two dress sizes in a targeted spot, not for significant overall weight reduction.

If you are hoping to treat a large volume of fat, or you are still some way from your goal weight, Aqualyx is unlikely to be the right choice, and we will tell you so. It is also not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and there are certain medical conditions and medications that mean it may not be appropriate. All of this is covered during your consultation, which is why we never treat on a first walk in without a proper conversation first.

At Wellface, every Aqualyx treatment is carried out by a doctor. Dr Amina Albeyatti, Dr Yosra Albeyatti and the rest of our medical team perform it themselves, which means the person assessing your suitability is the same person delivering the treatment and managing your aftercare. Fat dissolving injections placed by an inexperienced hand can lead to uneven results, so this is not a detail to overlook.

What a session involves

An Aqualyx appointment is usually quite quick, often taking around twenty to forty minutes depending on how many areas are being treated. The area is cleaned and marked, and in many cases a local anaesthetic is combined with the solution to keep you comfortable. The product is then injected into the fat layer through a series of small injections spread across the treatment zone.

You will typically feel a stinging or warm, burning sensation during and shortly after the injections. This is normal and reflects the product beginning to work on the fat cells. It tends to settle within an hour or so. Most areas need more than one session to achieve the desired result, spaced several weeks apart, and we will map out a realistic plan for you rather than promising everything in a single visit.

How many sessions you might need

The number of treatments depends on the area and the amount of fat present. Smaller regions such as a double chin might respond to two or three sessions, while larger areas can take more. Sessions are usually spaced around four to six weeks apart to give your body time to process the treated fat between appointments. We would rather build results gradually and safely than overload an area in one go.

Results and downtime

This is the part Dr Amina is most keen for patients to understand. Aqualyx is not instant, and it is not something to book two weeks before a wedding or a holiday. Results develop gradually as the body clears the broken down fat, and you will usually start to see a visible difference around four to six weeks after treatment, with continued improvement building over the sessions that follow.

Downtime is generally manageable but not invisible. As with any injectable treatment, you can expect some swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising and firmness in the treated area. Swelling in particular can be quite noticeable in the first few days, especially in areas like the chin, and it can take a couple of weeks to fully settle. Some people feel small lumps or nodules under the skin temporarily as the fat breaks down, which soften over time.

Because of this, timing is everything. Dr Amina's advice is simple and worth repeating: come in well in advance of any special occasion so we can complete your treatment plan and let the swelling resolve, leaving you looking your best on the day rather than mid recovery. This is a treatment that rewards planning.

Aftercare that helps your results

Good aftercare supports both your comfort and your outcome. We generally advise staying well hydrated, keeping active with gentle movement to encourage lymphatic drainage, and avoiding very hot baths, saunas, strenuous exercise and alcohol for a short period after treatment. Massaging the area as directed can help the product distribute and the swelling settle. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing over the treated site is sensible in the first few days. We will give you tailored instructions based on the areas we have treated.

How Aqualyx compares to other options

Aqualyx is often confused with liposuction, and it is worth being clear about the difference. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat through a cannula, usually under anaesthetic, and can address much larger volumes in a single operation. Aqualyx is non-surgical, involves no incisions and works gradually through injections. It suits smaller, more targeted areas and involves less downtime than surgery, but it will not achieve the dramatic change of a surgical procedure. Neither is better in the abstract; they simply suit different situations.

It is also worth mentioning that fat dissolving injections are a body contouring treatment, not a skin tightening one. If your main concern is loose or crepey skin rather than fat itself, a different approach may serve you better. At Wellface we offer treatments such as Morpheus8, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency to firm and tighten, and these can sometimes work alongside or instead of fat dissolving depending on what we find at assessment. The point of the consultation is to match you to the treatment that will genuinely deliver, which occasionally means recommending something other than the one you came in asking about.

Common questions about Aqualyx

Does Aqualyx hurt?

You will feel the injections and a stinging or burning sensation as the product goes to work, which is why a local anaesthetic is often used to keep you comfortable. Any discomfort during the session is usually brief. Afterwards, the area can feel tender, swollen and a little firm for several days, which is a normal part of the process rather than a sign anything is wrong.

Are the results permanent?

The fat cells destroyed by Aqualyx are permanently removed from the treated area. However, that does not make you immune to future weight gain. If you gain a significant amount of weight, the fat cells that remain can grow larger. Maintaining a stable weight after treatment is the best way to keep your results looking good in the long term.

How soon will I see a difference?

Most patients start to notice a visible change around four to six weeks after treatment, once the body has had time to clear the broken down fat. Because more than one session is usually needed, the full result builds over a course of treatments rather than appearing all at once. This gradual timeline is exactly why we advise against booking close to an event.

Is Aqualyx a weight loss treatment?

No. Aqualyx is a body contouring treatment for localised, stubborn areas of fat, not a method of losing weight overall. It works best for people who are already close to their target weight and want to refine a specific area. If overall weight is the concern, it is worth focusing on that first, and we are happy to talk this through honestly at your appointment.

Who will carry out my treatment?

At Wellface, Aqualyx is only ever performed by one of our doctors, including Dr Amina Albeyatti and Dr Yosra Albeyatti. Having a doctor assess, treat and follow up with you means your suitability is properly considered and your treatment is placed with care and precision.
