The Autumn Skin Reset: My Three Steps for Your Best Skin Yet

There's a moment every year, usually around late August, when the light softens and the mornings turn cooler, and skin that spent the summer in the sun starts to show its history. A little more pigmentation across the cheeks. Texture that isn't quite as smooth as it was in spring. That slightly tired, uneven look that no amount of highlighter seems to fix.

Autumn is the point in the calendar where you can actually do something about all of it. As the days shorten and sun exposure drops, certain treatments that simply aren't safe to have with a tan become possible again. I call this the planning season, the window where you set up the treatments that repair summer damage and build a foundation for glowing skin through winter and into the new year.

In my recent reel I walked through my three favourite changes to make as the weather turns. Two are device-led treatments best carried out in the cooler months, and the third is a skincare adjustment that makes everything else work harder. Here is the full picture behind each one, and why the order matters.

Why autumn is the right time to plan skin treatments

Sunlight and lasers don't mix well. When skin has recently been tanned, or is still carrying colour from a summer holiday, the melanin sitting in the upper layers becomes unpredictable during energy-based treatments. That raises the risk of the very thing you're trying to fix: uneven pigment, dark or light patches, and a longer, less comfortable recovery.

Resurfacing lasers and broadband light devices both rely on being able to target their energy precisely. A tan effectively blurs the target. That's why we ask you to avoid sun exposure for weeks before and after these treatments, and why the September to March stretch is when they come into their own. UV levels are lower, most holidays are behind you, and your skin is calmer and easier to protect afterwards.

There's a practical bonus too. Many of these treatments work best as a short course spaced a few weeks apart, and some involve a little visible recovery. Starting in autumn gives you time to complete a plan comfortably before Christmas, or to time things so you're glowing rather than peeling for the events that matter. I often remind my patients that good results are rarely about a single dramatic appointment. They come from sequencing the right things at the right time of year.

Step one: Secret Pro CO2 laser and RF microneedling

The first treatment on my list is Secret Pro by Cutera, and it's a clever piece of kit because it combines two different technologies in one platform. We offer this as our Secret Pro laser resurfacing treatment.

How it works

Secret Pro pairs fractional CO2 laser resurfacing with radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, and the two do quite different jobs. The CO2 laser works on the surface, creating thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the outer layers of the skin. As those heal, the skin sheds its weathered top layer and replaces it with fresher, smoother tissue. This is what improves tone, fine lines, dullness and the general roughness that builds up over years of sun exposure.

The RF microneedling reaches deeper. Fine needles deliver radiofrequency energy into the dermis, the supportive layer beneath the surface, where they gently heat the tissue and trigger a wound-healing response. That response is what the body uses to lay down new collagen and elastin over the following weeks and months. In my words, it targets skin laxity and tightness while the CO2 side resurfaces and gets that collagen banking under way.

Together they address both the texture you can see and the structural firmness you can feel. Improvement in pore size, texture and tone tends to come from the laser element, while the lifting and tightening comes from the deeper RF work.

What a session and recovery involve

A numbing cream is applied first, so the treatment is comfortable despite the intensity of what's happening beneath the surface. The active part is relatively quick, often somewhere in the region of half an hour depending on the areas being treated and how aggressive the settings are.

Downtime is real but manageable, and it scales with the intensity chosen. Most people can expect a few days of redness, warmth and some swelling, followed by skin that feels rough and looks a little bronzed as the treated micro-channels heal and flake away. For a light treatment that might be three or four days. For a deeper one it can stretch closer to a week to ten days. This is precisely why it's an autumn or winter treatment. You want to be indoors, out of strong sun, and diligent with sunscreen while the new skin settles.

Because it stimulates your own collagen, the results build gradually. Skin often looks refreshed within a couple of weeks, but the firming and smoothing continues to develop over the months that follow as new collagen matures.

Step two: BBL Hero for pigmentation and sun damage

The second treatment tackles the thing autumn tends to expose most cruelly: pigmentation. BBL, or BroadBand Light, is a form of intense pulsed light therapy, and the HERO version is a faster, more powerful iteration of it.

What BBL targets

BBL delivers pulses of light across a broad spectrum of wavelengths. That light is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, chiefly the melanin in brown spots and the haemoglobin in visible redness and broken capillaries. When the pigment or vessel absorbs the energy, it heats up and is disrupted, and the body then clears it away naturally.

In practice this means BBL Hero is excellent for the sun spots, freckling and patchy pigmentation that summer leaves behind, as well as diffuse redness and the general loss of an even tone. I describe it as removing the dark spots you really don't like and giving the skin a uniform glow. It's a genuinely effective way to reset the surface tone of the face, chest, hands or anywhere sun damage has accumulated.

What to expect

The treatment itself feels like a series of quick, warm snaps against the skin, often compared to the flick of an elastic band. A cool gel or the device's own cooling helps keep it comfortable, and there's very little downtime compared with resurfacing lasers. You can usually go back to normal life the same day.

The characteristic sign that it's working is that pigmented spots darken over the following day or two, taking on a coffee-ground appearance. Over the next week or so those darkened flecks lift and flake away, leaving clearer skin behind. Redness settles gradually. Most people need a short course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart to get the fullest result, which is another reason I suggest starting the run-up to Christmas early rather than leaving it late.

As with Secret Pro, sun avoidance is essential. Treating pigment only to expose fresh skin to more UV is self-defeating, so BBL sits firmly in the cooler-months category.

Step three: introducing or upgrading active vitamin A

The final part of my autumn plan isn't a treatment at all. It's the daily skincare that decides how well everything else performs. My recommendation is active vitamin A, in the form of a retinol or a prescription tretinoin.

Why vitamin A earns its place

Vitamin A derivatives are among the most studied ingredients in skincare, and for good reason. They speed up the rate at which skin cells turn over, so dull, tired surface cells are replaced more quickly by fresh ones. Over time they also encourage collagen production in the deeper layers, which helps with fine lines, firmness and overall resilience. The net effect is smoother texture, a brighter tone and skin that behaves younger than its age.

There's an important synergy here. Device-led treatments like Secret Pro and BBL work by stimulating the skin to repair and renew itself. A skin that's already primed with active vitamin A tends to respond better and recover more predictably, because its cellular machinery is already switched on. I frame it as giving those in-clinic treatments the best possible foundation to work from.

Start low, build slowly

The single biggest mistake with vitamin A is going in too hard, too fast. Retinoids can cause dryness, flaking and irritation if you leap to a high strength before your skin has adjusted, and that puts a lot of people off for good. If you've never used one, my advice is to begin on the lowest concentration and let your skin acclimatise, applying it a couple of nights a week at first and building up as tolerated.

If you're already a seasoned user, autumn is the moment to consider stepping up. The lower UV of the cooler months makes skin less prone to sensitivity, so it's a sensible time to move to a higher concentration and push cell turnover and collagen stimulation a little further. Whichever camp you're in, daily sunscreen is non-negotiable, because vitamin A makes skin more sensitive to sun. I can match the right strength and formulation to your skin so the process stays comfortable.

Putting the three steps together

The three parts of this plan aren't competing options. They stack. Active vitamin A prepares and maintains the skin day to day. BBL Hero clears the surface pigment and redness so tone becomes even. Secret Pro remodels texture and firmness from the surface down into the deeper structure. Used thoughtfully across autumn and winter, they address dullness, sun damage, enlarged pores, early laxity and the slow march of ageing all at once.

What sequence suits you depends on your skin, your concerns and your calendar, which is exactly the sort of thing a consultation is for. I'll look at your pigmentation, your texture, how much laxity there is and what your skin has been exposed to, then map out an order and timing that gets you to where you want to be without unnecessary downtime.

Common questions about autumn skin treatments

Can I really not have these treatments in summer?

Both Secret Pro and BBL are best avoided when skin is tanned or regularly exposed to strong sun. The presence of a tan changes how the skin absorbs energy and raises the risk of pigment problems and slower healing. It isn't a marketing quirk, it's a safety point, which is why autumn and winter are the recommended windows and why planning ahead matters.

How much downtime should I plan for?

They're quite different. BBL Hero usually involves little more than some redness and darkening spots that flake off over a week, with most people carrying on as normal straight away. Secret Pro is more involved, with several days of redness, mild swelling and flaking depending on how intensive the treatment is. I can tailor the intensity around what your diary allows.

Will one session be enough?

Sometimes you'll see a lovely difference from a single treatment, but the best and most lasting results usually come from a short, planned course, especially with BBL for pigmentation. Collagen-based improvements from Secret Pro also continue to develop over the months after treatment, so patience is part of the process.

I've never used retinol. Where do I start?

Start low and slow, ideally with guidance rather than picking something off a shelf. Beginning on the lowest concentration a couple of nights a week lets your skin adjust without the flaking and irritation that make people give up. I can recommend a suitable strength and show you how to build it into your routine alongside a proper sunscreen.

Are these treatments suitable for all skin tones?

RF microneedling in particular is generally safe across a wide range of skin tones, and treatments can be adjusted to suit. Light-based treatments like BBL need more careful assessment on deeper or more pigment-rich skin. This is one of the reasons a proper consultation comes first, so the right approach and settings are chosen for you.
