BBL Hero and MOXI: The Autumn Laser Pairing That Corrects and Polishes

WF The Wellface Team Published 26 September 2026 · 11 min read

There is a reason clinics talk about "laser season" once the summer holidays are behind us. The strong, direct sun of July and August is the one thing that makes light and laser treatments less predictable, because freshly tanned skin holds extra melanin and that changes how the skin responds to energy. As the days shorten and the tan begins to fade, that window opens. It is the moment a lot of our patients have quietly been waiting for.

The combination we keep coming back to at this time of year is BBL Hero paired with MOXI. One corrects. The other refines and protects. Used together in the same appointment, they cover more ground than either could alone, and they do it with the kind of downtime that fits around real life rather than forcing you to hide away for a fortnight.

This is a treatment that suits people at very different stages. Someone in their twenties or thirties who wants to stay ahead of the ageing process. Someone in their forties or fifties dealing with a decade of accumulated sun spots and diffuse redness. Below is how the pairing works, what a session actually feels like, and what to expect in the days and weeks afterwards.

What BBL Hero does for tone, pigmentation and redness

BBL stands for BroadBand Light, and the Hero version is Sciton's high-speed generation of the technology. HERO itself is short for High Energy Rapid Output, which in practice means it can deliver more energy across larger areas far more quickly than older intense pulsed light devices. That speed matters for comfort and for treating the face, neck, chest and hands in a sensible amount of time.

The way it works is elegant. BBL delivers precisely tuned pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin, and that light is absorbed by two main targets: melanin, the pigment responsible for sun spots and uneven tone, and haemoglobin, the pigment in the tiny blood vessels that create redness and flushing. The light energy converts to heat, the body recognises the treated pigment and vessels as something to clear away, and over the following days and weeks it does exactly that. At the same time, the warmth reaches deeper into the skin and nudges the fibroblasts to lay down fresh collagen.

So BBL Hero is the corrective half of the pairing. It is the tool we reach for when the concern is the appearance of age spots, freckling from years of sun, an uneven patchy tone, or the diffuse background redness and small visible vessels associated with rosacea. There is over a decade of clinical data behind Sciton's Forever Young BBL protocol, and one of the more interesting findings is that regular treatment appears to influence the way skin genes behave, helping treated skin look and act younger over time. That is why we frame BBL not only as a one-off correction but as something worth maintaining.

What happens to pigment after BBL

There is one detail worth understanding before you book, because it surprises people who are not expecting it. After a BBL session, the pigmented spots often get darker before they get better. Sun spots and freckles can look more pronounced for a few days, sometimes forming what looks like tiny coffee grounds on the skin surface. This is completely normal and actually a sign the treatment has done its job. Over the following seven to fourteen days that pigment lifts to the surface and flakes away, revealing clearer skin underneath. Redness from the treatment itself usually settles within an hour or two, while the improvement in vascular redness tends to build more gradually.

Where MOXI fits in

If BBL Hero is the corrector, MOXI is the polish. It is a non-ablative fractional laser working at a 1927nm wavelength, and rather than treating the whole surface at once it delivers energy in tiny microscopic columns, leaving healthy skin in between to speed up healing. Those micro-treatment zones prompt the skin to renew itself, boosting cell turnover and stimulating collagen without vaporising the surface the way an aggressive resurfacing laser would.

The result is a refresh. Smoother texture, a brighter and more even surface, softening of early pigmentation and that unmistakable glow that comes from healthy, freshly turned-over skin. In the reel, our practitioner described MOXI as "the ultimate prejuvenation", and that word captures it well. Prejuvenation is the idea of getting ahead of ageing rather than only chasing it once it has arrived. MOXI is gentle enough to be used earlier and more often, which makes it a genuinely preventative treatment as well as a corrective one.

Because it is non-ablative and works on all skin types, MOXI is a sensible entry point for anyone new to lasers who wants a noticeable improvement without significant downtime. It is equally at home as a maintenance treatment for skin that is already in good condition and simply needs regular polishing to stay that way.

Why 1927nm is good at brightness

The specific wavelength MOXI uses has a particular affinity for the superficial pigment that causes dullness and uneven tone. Clinical studies of 1927nm fractional lasers have shown measurable improvements in melanin levels, skin texture, fine lines and overall brightness, with patients frequently reporting their skin simply feels brighter afterwards. That is the science behind the glow, and it is why MOXI complements BBL so neatly rather than duplicating it.

Why combine BBL Hero and MOXI in one visit

The two treatments address the skin in different ways, and that is precisely why they work so well stacked together. BBL Hero goes after the pigment and the blood vessels, the tone and the redness. MOXI resurfaces and refines the texture while driving renewal and prevention. Combine them and you are treating discolouration, vascularity, texture and dullness in a single sitting, which is far more efficient than working through those concerns one treatment at a time.

Sciton designed its platform with this kind of layering in mind, and combination protocols that pair broadband light with fractional resurfacing are well established. When they run in the same appointment, the BBL typically goes first to clear pigment and calm redness, followed by the MOXI pass to polish and stimulate. You leave having addressed both the colour and the quality of your skin.

The autumn timing pulls it all together. Both treatments make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light for a short period, and both rely on you being diligent with sun protection afterwards. Cooler months with weaker sun and fewer beach days make that far easier to manage, which is exactly why we and so many patients treat the change of season as the natural start of laser season.

What a session involves and the downtime to expect

Every treatment at Wellface starts with a consultation. Because these are doctor-led decisions, one of our doctors will look at your skin, ask about your history and your goals, and confirm that the combination is right for you and set at the correct intensity for your skin type. Getting the settings right is the single most important factor in a safe, effective result.

On the day, the skin is cleansed thoroughly. For the BBL portion a cooling gel is applied and you wear protective eyewear, then pulses of light are delivered across the area. Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap, a little like the flick of a small elastic band, and it is generally very tolerable. The MOXI pass feels like a warm, prickling sensation, and a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand to keep you comfortable. A full face treatment is quick, often wrapped up in around half an hour to an hour depending on how many areas are being covered.

Afterwards, expect the skin to feel warm, a bit like mild sunburn, and that warmth can linger for thirty to sixty minutes. You may look flushed and slightly swollen for a day or so. From MOXI, the skin often develops a fine, sandpaper-like texture over the following days as it renews, sometimes with a light bronzing appearance as micro-darkened dots called MENDs work their way out. From BBL, the pigment darkening and flaking runs over the next one to two weeks. Most people feel socially presentable within three to four days, and plenty return to work or their desk the same afternoon if they are comfortable being a little pink.

Aftercare that protects your result

The fortnight after treatment is where you either protect your investment or undermine it. Keep the skin gently cleansed and well hydrated, and let any flaking pigment shed on its own rather than picking or scrubbing at it. Skip hot workouts, saunas and very hot showers for the first day or two while the heat settles. Broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable, applied every morning and topped up through the day, because fresh sun exposure is the fastest way to bring pigmentation straight back and to risk uneven healing. Our doctors will talk you through a calming, supportive routine and may recommend medical-grade skincare to get the most from the result.

Who the combination suits, and who should wait

This pairing is a strong fit for anyone bothered by sun spots, freckling, an uneven or blotchy tone, background redness or visible small vessels, dullness, or the earliest signs of ageing they would rather stay ahead of. It works across a range of ages precisely because BBL does the correcting and MOXI does the preventing.

There are times to hold off. If you are actively tanned, we will usually ask you to let the colour fade first, which is another reason autumn is ideal. Active infections or breakouts in the area, certain photosensitising medications, and pregnancy are all reasons to postpone or reconsider, and a history of cold sores may mean you need preventative treatment beforehand. A honest consultation sorts all of this out, and if the timing is not right our doctors will tell you and suggest an alternative.

Common questions about BBL Hero and MOXI

How many sessions will I need?

There is no single answer, because it depends on what you are treating and whether the goal is correction or maintenance. Significant sun damage or established redness usually responds best to a short course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, while skin that is in good shape may need only occasional treatments to keep it there. Many patients settle into a rhythm of a couple of maintenance sessions a year, often timed to the cooler months.

Does it hurt?

Most people find both treatments very manageable. BBL feels like a warm snap against the skin, and MOXI a warm prickle that numbing cream keeps comfortable. Any heat afterwards fades within the hour. Compared with more aggressive ablative resurfacing, this combination is on the gentler end of the scale.

When will I see results?

You will often notice brighter, fresher skin within a few days as the MOXI renewal comes through. The pigment treated by BBL continues to darken and then flake over one to two weeks, and the fuller improvement in tone, redness and glow builds over the following three to four weeks as collagen responds and the skin finishes clearing the treated pigment.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

MOXI's 1927nm wavelength is considered suitable across all Fitzpatrick skin types, and BBL settings can be adjusted for different skin tones. That said, energy-based treatments always carry a small risk of pigment change if settings are wrong for the skin, which is exactly why we insist on a doctor-led assessment first. Your practitioner will tailor the approach to your skin rather than applying a one-size protocol.

Can I have this if I have rosacea?

BBL is one of the more effective options for diffusing the redness and reducing the small vessels associated with rosacea, and many patients with reactive, flushing-prone skin do very well with it. Because rosacea skin is sensitive, the assessment and settings matter more than ever, and our doctors will make sure the plan is gentle and appropriate for you.
