BBL Hero for Pigmentation and Sun Damage: How Broadband Light Clears and Rejuvenates Skin
Sun spots, freckles that have crept in over the years, patches of redness that never quite settle. These are some of the most common concerns we hear at Wellface, and they are also some of the most treatable. I often say that the number one thing patients ask me is how to reach a point where they feel confident going out without makeup. For a lot of people, uneven tone and pigmentation are exactly what's standing in the way.
BBL Hero by Sciton is one of the treatments I reach for again and again, and it's easy to see why. It uses broadband light to fade pigmentation, calm redness and lift years of accumulated sun damage, all while nudging the skin to build fresh collagen underneath. The result is a clearer, brighter, more even complexion that looks like healthy skin rather than anything obviously "done".
Below I've unpacked how the treatment works, what a session actually feels like, who it suits and why the long-term protocol has become such a talking point. If pigmentation has been on your mind, this is the detail worth reading before you book.
What BBL Hero actually is
BBL stands for BroadBand Light, and Hero is the latest generation of Sciton's platform. It sits in the same family as IPL, or intense pulsed light, but it's a good deal more powerful and more precise. Rather than firing a single wavelength like a traditional laser, BBL delivers a broad spectrum of light that can be filtered and fine-tuned to target specific problems in the skin.
That flexibility is the whole point. With the right filter and settings, the light energy is absorbed by the pigment in a brown spot or the haemoglobin in a broken capillary. The energy converts to heat, the target is disrupted, and the body then clears the damaged pigment or vessel over the following days and weeks. Because the surrounding skin isn't the target, healthy tissue is largely left alone.
The Hero upgrade brought faster treatment speeds, higher peak power and much better cooling built into the handpiece. In practice that means larger areas can be covered comfortably, treatments are quicker, and the experience is far more tolerable than older devices. The face, neck, chest, hands, arms and back can all be treated, which matters because sun damage rarely stops neatly at the jawline.
How it clears pigmentation and sun damage
Most of the pigmentation I see on the face and chest is the legacy of ultraviolet exposure. Years of sunshine, sometimes decades of it, prompt the skin to lay down excess melanin in scattered patches. Freckles, age spots, sun spots and general mottled tone all fall under this umbrella. Redness and visible vessels, whether from rosacea, sun damage or simply thin skin, are a separate but equally common concern.
BBL Hero addresses both in the same session. I tailor the wavelength and energy to your particular skin, so a session aimed at brown spots is set up differently to one focused on redness, and often both are treated together. When the light targets pigment, the treated spots typically darken first. Over the next few days they take on a slightly deeper, coffee-ground appearance before flaking away and lifting off as the skin renews. This is completely normal and a good sign that the treatment has worked.
For redness and vessels, the improvement tends to show as a gradual calming of the overall flush rather than obvious peeling. Full results usually settle over roughly two to three weeks as the skin completes its natural turnover. Deeper or long-standing sun damage may need a short course of sessions to fully clear, and I'll be honest with you about what one session versus a few is likely to achieve.
The rejuvenation you don't see straight away
Fading spots is the visible headline, but there's a second thing happening beneath the surface. The heat delivered into the deeper layers of the skin stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Over the weeks after treatment, that fresh collagen firms and smooths the skin, refines texture and gives that soft, lit-from-within quality people describe as glow.
This is where Sciton's Forever Young protocol comes in, and it's the part of the treatment I get most animated about. The idea is straightforward: rather than treating once and forgetting about it, you commit to regular maintenance sessions, ideally a minimum of two a year, over the long term.
The reason this matters is genuinely interesting. Research carried out at Stanford University looked at what happens to skin cells with regular BBL treatment and found that the light appears to influence gene expression, effectively shifting the activity of ageing skin cells so they behave more like younger ones. In other words, consistent treatment doesn't just correct today's damage, it seems to help the skin hold its quality over time rather than sliding in the usual direction. That's the science behind my third and favourite reason to have BBL: the longer you stick with it, the better your skin tends to age.
Who BBL Hero suits
One of the things I love most about BBL is that there's rarely anyone who walks into the clinic and isn't a candidate for it. Patients in their twenties come in for a bright, even canvas and early prevention. Those in their thirties and forties often want to tackle the first scattering of sun spots. Fifties, sixties and beyond, it's about clearing years of accumulated damage and keeping the skin fresh. The treatment can be dialled up or down to suit the goal.
That said, light-based treatments do work by targeting contrast between pigment and surrounding skin, so a proper assessment of your skin type is essential. Very deep or tanned skin needs particular care, and treatment isn't suitable if you've had recent sun exposure or a fresh tan, because the extra melanin in the skin changes how the light behaves and raises the risk of unwanted marks. This is exactly why every session at Wellface starts with a consultation and a plan built around your skin rather than a one-size-fits-all setting.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking certain medications such as roaccutane, or prone to cold sores, do mention it, as these can affect timing and suitability. Melasma, a specific type of hormonal pigmentation, also behaves differently to sun damage and needs a considered approach, so it's worth flagging at your consultation.
What to expect on the day
A BBL Hero session is quick, which is part of its appeal. Depending on the area and your concerns, treatment itself usually takes somewhere between fifteen and thirty minutes. Your skin is cleansed, a thin layer of cool gel is applied, and you'll wear protective eyewear throughout. As the handpiece passes over the skin you'll feel brief warm flashes, often likened to the light snap of an elastic band, with the built-in cooling taking the edge off. Most people find it very manageable.
Afterwards your skin may look a little pink and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn, and this usually calms within a few hours to a day. Where pigment has been treated, expect those spots to darken over the next day or two before flaking off naturally over about a week to ten days. The single most important rule here: let them shed on their own. Picking or scrubbing at them can cause marks, so leave the skin to do its work.
Aftercare that protects your results
Aftercare with BBL is refreshingly simple, but a few things make a real difference. Keep the skin cool and hydrated in the first day or two and skip hot workouts, saunas and steam rooms until any warmth has fully settled. Avoid active ingredients such as retinoids and acids for a few days, and be gentle when cleansing while the darkened spots are lifting.
Sun protection is non-negotiable. Because you've just treated sun damage, the last thing you want is to invite it straight back. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 worn daily, reapplied when you're outdoors, protects your investment and stops new pigmentation forming. I'll talk you through medical-grade products that support and prolong your result, and this is where the difference between a good outcome and a great one often lies.
Common questions about BBL Hero
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how much pigmentation and sun damage you're starting with. Many people see a clear improvement after a single session, but stubborn or widespread damage often responds best to a short course spaced a few weeks apart. Beyond correction, the Forever Young approach of around two maintenance sessions a year is what keeps the skin looking its best over time.
Is there any downtime?
Very little. Most people are back to their normal day straight away, with perhaps some mild pinkness and warmth for a few hours. The main visible sign is the temporary darkening of pigmented spots before they flake away, which is easy to cover with makeup once I confirm it's fine to do so.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe it as very tolerable. You'll feel brief warm flashes as the light pulses, cushioned by the cooling in the Hero handpiece. There's no need for numbing cream for most sessions, though sensitive areas can feel a little sharper.
When will I see results?
You'll often notice a brighter, cleaner look within the first week or two as the treated pigment lifts and clears. The collagen-driven improvements in texture and firmness build more gradually over the weeks that follow, and they continue to accumulate with regular treatment.
Can BBL be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it often is. BBL pairs well with skin boosters, Profhilo, microneedling and injectable treatments as part of a wider plan, though timing matters. Your Wellface doctor or therapist will sequence everything sensibly so each treatment has room to do its job.
