Getting Your Skin Christmas Ready: Facials, Peels and Microneedling for a Festive Glow
The countdown has started, and if the thought of party season fills you with a small flutter of panic about how your skin is looking, you are not alone. After a summer of sunshine, holidays and long evenings outdoors, most of us head into autumn with a bit of dullness, some uneven tone and pigment that has crept up over the warmer months. The good news is that this is exactly the right time of year to do something about it.
As one of the senior therapists at Wellface, I want to share my three favourite ways to get skin looking bright, smooth and celebration ready before December arrives. None of them are dramatic or invasive. They are the sort of treatments you can build into a normal month without disappearing off the radar, and together they make a real difference to how skin looks under the lights at a Christmas gathering.
The theme running through all three is consistency and timing. Skin responds to steady, well spaced treatment far better than to a single rushed appointment the week before an event. Below is how the plan comes together, why the colder months suit it so well, and what each step actually involves.
Why autumn and winter are the best time to treat your skin
There is a reason clinics talk about "peel season" once the clocks go back. Many of the treatments that brighten skin and fade pigmentation make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light for a short while afterwards. In the height of summer, with strong sun and more time spent outside, that can undo the work almost as quickly as it is done. In November, December and January, with weaker sun and shorter days, the skin has a much calmer environment in which to renew itself.
That matters most for pigmentation and sun damage. Those freckly patches, the uneven tone across the cheeks and forehead, and the general "tired" look that summer leaves behind all respond well to treatment now, precisely because there is less sun to reactivate the pigment while the skin is settling.
It also means you have time on your side. Skin renewal is not instant. The deeper benefits of collagen stimulation build over weeks, so starting in good time before the festive season gives your complexion room to reach its best rather than being asked to perform overnight. As I always say, the diary fills quickly at this time of year, so booking early is less about pressure and more about making sure you actually get the slots that let the plan work properly.
Step one: a monthly facial to keep skin in good condition
The foundation of any skin plan is regular, professional cleansing and hydration, and that is where a monthly facial comes in. Think of it as maintenance rather than a treat. Skin that is looked after consistently holds its glow far better than skin that is only attended to in a panic before an event.
At Wellface the facial menu covers several options, so the treatment can be matched to what your skin needs on the day. Hydrafacial uses a patented vortex system to cleanse, gently exfoliate, extract debris from pores and flood the skin with hydrating serums in one session, which is why it leaves such an immediate, plumped freshness. The Fire and Ice facial pairs a resurfacing stage with a cooling, calming stage for an energising reset. There are also enzyme based and advanced fusion treatments that lean more towards exfoliation and targeted actives. I will steer you towards whichever suits your skin that month, and it may well change through the season.
The point of monthly visits is momentum. Each facial keeps the surface clear, supports the skin barrier and lets me track how your skin is responding, so small issues get caught early. It is also the ideal time to review your home skincare, because what you do between appointments carries most of the weight. A good facial once a month plus the right products at home will do more for a lasting glow than any single treatment ever could.
Step two: chemical peels for brightness and even tone
If step one is maintenance, chemical peels are the reset. A peel uses a carefully chosen blend of acids to lift away the build up of dull, dead cells on the surface and encourage fresher skin to come through. The result is brighter, more even, smoother skin, with pigmentation looking softer and pores appearing tighter. It is one of the most reliable ways to shift a complexion from flat and tired to genuinely radiant.
Wellface uses professional peels from ZO Skin Health, the medical skincare range founded by dermatologist Dr Zein Obagi, and has recently introduced two new options that I am particularly enthusiastic about: a stimulator peel and a restorative peel.
The stimulator peel
The stimulator peel is the gentle, no fuss option that suits almost everyone, including first timers and more sensitive skin. It works with a blend of alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic, lactic and citric acid, often with a little salicylic acid, to exfoliate the surface and encourage cell turnover. Sometimes called a "lunchtime" or "red carpet" peel, it takes around half an hour and leaves skin looking noticeably brighter almost straight away, with little to no visible flaking. Alongside the instant glow, it also nudges the skin to produce collagen and elastin over time, so repeated peels build results rather than just providing a quick fix. For that reason it is often done as a short course and then kept up every few weeks.
The restorative peel
The restorative peel is aimed more at skin that feels dry, rough, dull or leathery and needs its glow rebuilt rather than simply refreshed. It focuses on smoothing that tired, weathered texture and restoring a healthier, more comfortable surface, which makes it a lovely choice for skin that has taken a battering from sun and central heating. It also works well as part of conditioning the skin before and after other procedures, helping results last.
Which peel is right for you depends on your skin type, your main concern and whether you have peeled before. That is decided in consultation, and the beauty of having both options is that the treatment can be tailored rather than one size fits all. What they share is that autumn and winter timing: with the sun off the agenda, this is the window to tackle pigmentation and dullness and step into December looking clearer and fresher.
Step three: microneedling with exosomes for texture and bounce
The third of my recommendations, and one I clearly love, is microneedling, ideally paired with exosomes. Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, uses a device fitted with very fine needles to create tiny controlled channels in the skin. Those micro channels trigger the body's natural repair response, which ramps up the production of collagen and elastin. Over the following weeks that translates into firmer, smoother skin, softer fine lines, refined texture and a reduction in the look of enlarged pores. It is a genuine workhorse for skin quality.
Adding exosomes takes it a step further. Exosomes are tiny messenger particles rich in growth factors and signalling molecules that help skin cells communicate and repair. Applied during and after microneedling, they travel down through the freshly made channels to reach the deeper layers where regeneration happens, something a normal serum sitting on the surface simply cannot do. The two work in partnership: the needling opens the pathway and stimulates repair, while the exosomes amplify that repair, calming inflammation, supporting hydration and encouraging healthy new cells. People often describe the result as a fresh, lit from within radiance, along with better tone and that plump, bouncy quality that photographs so well.
Because exosomes help the skin recover more smoothly, redness after treatment tends to settle relatively quickly, often within a day or so, though this varies from person to person. As with peels, the deeper benefits build over the weeks that follow and improve further with a short series, which is another reason to start well before any big occasion rather than the week of it.
How the three treatments work together
None of these steps competes with the others. The monthly facial keeps the surface clean and hydrated so everything else works better. Peels clear away dullness and even out tone. Microneedling with exosomes rebuilds texture and firmness from within. Spacing them sensibly through the autumn, under my guidance, lets each one do its job while the skin stays comfortable. That combined, layered approach is what produces skin that looks healthy and glowing rather than simply "done".
A sensible run up to the festive season
If you are planning your own pre Christmas skin prep, the single most useful thing you can do is start early and space treatments out. Skin that is rushed rarely looks its best, and the days immediately before a party are the wrong time to try something new. A relaxed timeline gives any temporary redness time to fade and lets collagen do its slow, worthwhile work.
A gentle, brightening treatment like a stimulator peel can be timed to give a fresh glow in the days before an event, whereas microneedling and any deeper work are best done further ahead so the skin has fully settled and the collagen response has had time to show. I will build the schedule around your skin and your calendar, and will factor in your home skincare too, because consistent product use between visits is what protects and extends the results.
Common questions about pre Christmas skin prep
How far in advance should I start?
Ideally several weeks before your first event, and earlier still if you want the fuller benefit of collagen stimulation from peels or microneedling. Starting in November for the Christmas period is sensible. It also means you can secure appointments before the diary fills, which happens fast at this time of year.
Is there any downtime with these treatments?
It depends on the treatment. Facials and the gentle stimulator peel have little to no downtime and are easy to fit into a normal day. Microneedling and stronger peels can leave the skin pink or slightly flaky for a day or two, and exosomes tend to help that redness settle more quickly. I will tell you exactly what to expect before you book anything close to an event.
Are peels and microneedling suitable for sensitive skin?
Often, yes. The ZO stimulator peel is designed to be gentle enough for first timers and sensitive skin, and microneedling with exosomes is generally well tolerated across different skin types and tones because it works with the skin's own repair process. Suitability is always assessed in consultation, where your skin type and history are taken into account.
How many sessions will I need?
For a one off glow before a specific event, a single facial or gentle peel can be enough. For lasting change in pigmentation, texture or firmness, a short course spaced across the weeks works far better, followed by regular maintenance. My advice to see me monthly reflects exactly that: results come from consistency, not from a single appointment.
Can I combine these treatments with injectables?
Skin treatments like facials, peels and microneedling look after skin quality, while treatments such as anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers address movement and volume. They complement each other well, but the sequence and timing matter, so it is worth planning them together at consultation rather than booking piecemeal.
