Dr Olivia's Top Three Christmas Treatments for Glowing, Party-Ready Skin
My Top Three Christmas Treatments for Glowing, Party-Ready Skin
The run-up to Christmas has a way of creeping up on all of us. One minute the nights are drawing in, the next there are three parties in the diary and a family gathering to host. Add in central heating, cold winds and the odd late night, and skin often looks tired and a little flat by the time you actually want it to shine.
I see this every December at Wellface. My advice is simple. A few well-chosen treatments, booked with enough time to settle, can leave your skin hydrated, smooth and genuinely glowing rather than just covered up with makeup. I have three favourites for the festive season, and none of them require dramatic downtime or a face full of visible work.
Here is what those three treatments are, how each one works and why the timing matters if you want to walk into the New Year looking refreshed rather than run down.
Why winter is hard on your skin
Before the treatments themselves, it helps to understand what December actually does to your complexion. Cold outdoor air holds very little moisture, and the moment you step inside, warm dry heating pulls water out of the skin's surface. Your barrier, the outer layer that keeps hydration locked in, works harder and often loses the battle. The result is skin that feels tight, looks dull and no longer bounces back the way it does in summer.
Lips take the worst of it because they have no oil glands of their own to protect them. That is why they chap, flake and lose their natural fullness in winter. Meanwhile, months of squinting into low winter sun and the general fatigue of a busy season tend to make expression lines look a little deeper.
My trio tackles all three of these at once. Deep hydration for the face, targeted comfort and softness for the lips, and a light touch on the lines that age you. Think of it as skin maintenance for the season when your skin needs it most.
Skin boosters for hydration and glow
First on the list, and the one I reach for most often, is a course of skin boosters.
Skin boosters are injectable treatments based on hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in your skin and can hold many times its own weight in water. Unlike dermal filler, which is placed in specific areas to add volume or reshape a feature, a skin booster is delivered in tiny microdroplets across a wider area such as the cheeks, the lower face or the neck. The aim is not to change your shape at all. It is to flood the skin with moisture from within and improve its overall quality.
What actually happens to your skin
Once the hyaluronic acid is placed just beneath the surface, it draws water into the tissue and holds it there. Skin that was looking dry and dull starts to look plumper and more reflective, which is what most of us mean when we say a complexion looks luminous. Over the following weeks, many skin boosters also gently stimulate the skin's own production of collagen and elastin, so the benefit builds rather than fading straight away. You get immediate hydration and a slower, quieter improvement in firmness and texture on top of it.
What a session involves
A typical appointment is quick, often around thirty minutes including a numbing cream to keep you comfortable. You may notice small bumps at each injection point on the day, and these usually settle within several hours to a day or so. Most people go back to normal life the same afternoon. For the best result, skin boosters are usually done as a short initial course of two or three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, then topped up periodically through the year. If Christmas is your target, this is exactly why I encourage my patients to book in early rather than the week before a party.
Lip hydration for soft, party-perfect lips
The second treatment is one my team talks about a lot, and with good reason. Lip hydration is not the same as lip filler, and the distinction matters.
Standard lip filler is designed to add volume and definition, changing the size and shape of the lips. Lip hydration uses a lighter, more fluid hyaluronic acid product placed into the lip tissue to restore moisture and suppleness without meaningfully changing the size. The effect is soft, healthy, naturally rosy lips with that glossy, well-cared-for look, rather than a bigger pout.
Who it suits
This is the ideal choice if your lips feel permanently dry, chapped or a little crepey in winter, or if you love the lip gloss look but find your lips just will not hold moisture no matter how much balm you apply. It also suits people who want their lips to look their best but are nervous about the idea of obvious filler. Because you are treating hydration rather than volume, the result is subtle and easy to live with.
The treatment itself is brief, and numbing cream keeps it comfortable. You can expect a little swelling immediately afterwards, which is normal for anything done to the lips, and it usually calms down within a day or two. I will talk you through simple aftercare, such as keeping the area clean and avoiding very hot drinks or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day.
Anti-wrinkle treatments for smooth, refreshed skin
The third of my festive picks is a well-placed anti-wrinkle treatment, or what many people still call a toxin appointment.
Anti-wrinkle injections use botulinum toxin to soften the specific muscles responsible for expression lines, most commonly the frown lines between the brows, the horizontal lines across the forehead and the crow's feet around the eyes. When those muscles are relaxed, the overlying skin creases far less, so existing lines look smoother and new ones are slower to form. It is one of the most predictable, well-studied treatments in aesthetics when it is placed carefully by a doctor.
Why timing is everything before Christmas
This is the treatment where planning ahead genuinely counts. Anti-wrinkle injections do not work instantly. You will usually start to notice the effect within three to five days, with the full result settling by around two weeks. That is why booking your last toxin appointment of the year with time to spare is so important. Leave it too late and you will still be waiting for it to kick in on the day of the party. Get it in with a fortnight to go and you walk into every celebration looking rested and smooth, ready to see out the year.
The appointment itself takes a matter of minutes, involves only tiny injections and requires very little downtime. I will ask you to stay upright, avoid rubbing the area and skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Most patients return to work straight afterwards with nothing to show for it.
How the three work together
What makes this a trio rather than three separate ideas is how neatly the treatments complement one another. Skin boosters address hydration and glow across the whole face. Lip hydration looks after the one area that struggles most in winter and that no amount of face cream will fix. Anti-wrinkle injections take care of the movement lines that read as tiredness in photographs. Together they cover quality, comfort and smoothness, which is a far more complete result than any single treatment on its own.
I often remind my patients that natural is the goal. The point of a December refresh is not to look different, it is to look like yourself on a good day, well rested and healthy. Done properly and with enough lead time, that is exactly what these treatments deliver.
Common questions about festive treatments
When should I book if I want to be ready for Christmas parties?
The earlier the better. Anti-wrinkle injections need roughly two weeks to reach their full effect, and skin boosters give their best result after a short course rather than a single session. Booking in from mid to late November gives everything time to settle before the busiest part of December.
Will people be able to tell I have had something done?
That is not the aim. Skin boosters improve the quality of your skin rather than changing your features, lip hydration adds softness and moisture rather than size, and anti-wrinkle injections are placed to soften lines while keeping natural expression. The intended outcome is that you simply look fresher.
Is there much downtime?
Very little. You may see small bumps after skin boosters, mild swelling after lip hydration and the occasional tiny mark at injection points, but these settle quickly. Most people carry on with their day. I will give you clear aftercare advice for each treatment.
Can I have all three at once?
Many patients do combine treatments, and I will advise on the best order and spacing for you during your consultation. Sometimes it makes sense to stage them across a couple of appointments so everything settles beautifully in time.
Are these treatments suitable for me?
Suitability depends on your skin, your medical history and what you want to achieve, which is exactly what a consultation is for. A doctor-led assessment means the plan is tailored to you rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
