Do You Need to Have Had a Baby to Benefit from Empower?
It's one of the most common questions I hear when women first ask me about intimate and pelvic health treatments at Wellface. They've read a little about Empower, they suspect it might help, and then they hesitate. "But I haven't had children," they say, as though that rules them out before the conversation has even started.
The short answer is no. You don't need to have had a baby to benefit from Empower. As our Women's Wellness Leader, I'd explain it like this: pregnancy and childbirth are simply the most common reasons women develop the symptoms Empower addresses, which is why so many of the women who come through our doors are mothers. But they aren't the only ones. Pelvic floor weakness, vaginal laxity and the loss of confidence that can come with them have plenty of other causes, and Empower is built to help across the board.
This post walks through what Empower actually is, why childbirth has such a profound effect on the pelvic floor, who else stands to gain from treatment, and what a course of sessions involves. If you've been quietly wondering whether this is for you, it should give you a clearer picture.
What Empower actually is
Empower, or EmpowerRF to give it its full name, is a platform of treatments from InMode designed specifically for women's intimate and pelvic health. Rather than being a single device doing a single job, it brings together several technologies that can be combined to suit what each woman needs. That flexibility is part of what makes it so useful, because no two women arrive with exactly the same set of concerns.
The component most people think of first is VTone. This is a gentle intravaginal muscle stimulation treatment. A small applicator, roughly the size of a tampon, is placed into the vaginal canal and delivers low-level electrical pulses that trigger the pelvic floor muscles to contract and release. In practical terms it works like a very efficient, very thorough Kegel session, except the muscles are being activated far more completely than most women manage on their own. Over a course of sessions this helps rebuild strength and control in the muscles that support the bladder, bowel and uterus.
Alongside VTone, the Empower platform includes radiofrequency treatments such as Forma V and Morpheus8V, which work on the quality of the vaginal tissue itself rather than the muscle. These use controlled heat, and in the case of Morpheus8V a microneedling element, to stimulate collagen and improve the tone, comfort and elasticity of the tissue. Depending on what's troubling you, I may recommend one of these, a combination, or start with pelvic floor rehabilitation and build from there.
Why pregnancy and childbirth have such an impact
There's a good reason the majority of women who benefit from Empower have been pregnant. Carrying a baby places an enormous, sustained load on the pelvic floor. As I often put it, you're suddenly carrying a heavy weight for nine months, and the effect doesn't simply switch off the day the baby arrives.
The pelvic floor is a sling of muscle and connective tissue that runs across the base of the pelvis. Throughout pregnancy it stretches and bears increasing weight. Hormonal changes, particularly the rise in relaxin, soften the ligaments and tissues to prepare the body for birth, which is exactly what's needed at the time but leaves things looser afterwards. A vaginal delivery stretches these muscles further still, and instrumental deliveries or a large baby can add to that. Even a caesarean birth doesn't leave the pelvic floor untouched, because much of the strain happens during the pregnancy itself rather than only at delivery.
The result is that many women notice changes in the months and years after having children. A little leak when they sneeze, cough, laugh or run. A sense of heaviness or dragging low down. A feeling that things aren't quite as toned as they were. Reduced sensation or confidence during intimacy. None of this is a personal failing, and it's far more common than most women realise, precisely because so few of us talk about it. Empower gives the body a structured way to recover strength and function that daily life rarely allows on its own.
You don't have to be a mother to benefit
Here's the part worth underlining. Pregnancy is the most common route to these symptoms, but it's not the only one, and I'm clear that women who've never been pregnant are welcome and can genuinely be helped.
The pelvic floor weakens for lots of reasons. Age is a significant one, as muscle tone and collagen naturally decline over time. The menopause accelerates this, because falling oestrogen thins and dries the vaginal tissue and reduces its elasticity, which is why many women first notice intimate changes in their forties and fifties regardless of whether they've had children. High-impact exercise over many years, chronic constipation, heavy lifting and a persistent cough can all place repeated strain on the pelvic floor. Some women simply have naturally weaker connective tissue.
I also point to gynaecological history as a factor. Women who've had large fibroids, cervical problems or certain pelvic surgeries may find their pelvic floor and vaginal tissue have been affected, and Empower may be able to support them too. In these cases a proper consultation matters even more, because the right approach depends on understanding your full history.
So if you've held back from asking about Empower because you assumed it was strictly a postpartum treatment, that assumption is worth setting aside. The honest position is that mothers make up the largest group, but the door is open to any woman experiencing these concerns.
What the symptoms look like day to day
It can help to name the things Empower is designed to improve, because women often live with them for years without connecting them to something treatable.
- Leaking urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jump or exercise, known as stress incontinence
- A sudden, hard-to-control urge to pass urine, and needing the loo more often than feels normal
- A sensation of heaviness, pressure or dragging in the pelvis
- Vaginal laxity, dryness or reduced sensation, and a knock to confidence during intimacy
If any of these sound familiar, you're in good company. They're some of the most frequent reasons women come to see me, and they respond well to the right treatment plan.
What a course of treatment involves
Empower is non-surgical and works without any need for downtime, which is one of the reasons women find it so manageable alongside busy lives and, often, young children.
A VTone session takes around 20 to 30 minutes. You remain clothed from the waist up, the small applicator is inserted, and the device gradually builds a series of comfortable muscle contractions. Most women describe the sensation as a firm but not painful pulsing, and many use the time simply to relax. There's no recovery period afterwards. You can drive yourself home and carry on with your day, including work and exercise.
Because you're retraining muscle, results build over a course rather than appearing all at once. A typical plan runs to several sessions spaced a week or so apart, and many women begin to notice improvements in control and comfort within the first few weeks. The radiofrequency treatments such as Forma V and Morpheus8V follow their own protocols, and where microneedling is involved there may be a short period of sensitivity, all of which I'll talk through with you beforehand.
The starting point is always a consultation. This is a private, unhurried conversation with a doctor who does this work every day, and it's where we'll agree which parts of the Empower platform suit your symptoms and goals. Nothing is decided for you, and no treatment goes ahead until you understand the plan and feel comfortable with it.
Common questions about Empower
Is Empower painful?
No. VTone produces muscle contractions that feel like a firm pulsing, adjusted to a level that's comfortable for you. The radiofrequency treatments involve gentle warmth. Most women are surprised by how tolerable the sessions are, and there's no anaesthetic needed for pelvic floor stimulation.
How soon will I see results?
Because you're rebuilding muscle strength and stimulating tissue over time, improvements tend to appear gradually. Many women report better control and comfort within the first few weeks of starting, with results continuing to develop as the course goes on.
Can I have Empower during or after the menopause?
Yes. The menopause is one of the very reasons a woman who's never been pregnant might benefit. Falling oestrogen thins the vaginal tissue and weakens the pelvic floor, and Empower can help address the laxity, dryness and reduced tone that follow. I'll tailor the approach to where you are in that transition.
Is there any downtime?
Pelvic floor stimulation with VTone has no downtime at all, so you can return to normal activities immediately. If your plan includes microneedling radiofrequency, you may have some short-lived sensitivity, which I'll explain in advance.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No referral is needed. You can arrange a consultation directly with us, and I'll take a full history to make sure Empower is right for you and to design a plan around your needs.
