Holiday-Ready Skin: Dr Olivia's Pre-Holiday Treatment Plan

Holiday-Ready Skin: My Pre-Holiday Treatment Plan

There is a particular kind of panic that arrives about ten days before a holiday. You catch sight of your skin in bright bathroom light, notice it looks a little dull or uneven, and suddenly wish you had done something about it weeks ago. I see this every year, and my advice is refreshingly simple: start early.

Easter is only around five weeks away, and the summer break follows soon after. That window matters more than most people realise. The treatments that leave your skin looking its brightest and smoothest are the same ones that need a little recovery time first. Book them too close to your flight and you either travel mid-recovery or miss the results entirely. Book them now and your skin has time to settle, rebuild and glow.

In a recent reel from the clinic, I walked through my top picks for getting skin holiday-ready: microneedling (with or without radiofrequency), BBL laser for pigmentation and sun damage, skin boosters for deep hydration, and well-timed injectables. Below I unpack how each one works, what to expect, and how to slot them into the weeks before you travel.

Why timing is everything before you travel

Most skin treatments work by prompting the skin to repair and renew itself. That process is brilliant for texture, tone and firmness, but it is not instant. Collagen takes weeks to build. Pigment clears in stages. Skin that has been resurfaced needs to calm down and rebuild its barrier before it faces strong sun.

That is the crux of my message. Doing a treatment now, rather than the week before you go, gives your skin time to recover and time for you to genuinely enjoy the results while you are away. It also builds in space for a review appointment, which matters most with injectables where a small adjustment can make all the difference.

There is a practical safety point too. Several of these treatments make your skin temporarily more sensitive to UV light. Going straight from the treatment couch into strong Mediterranean sun is the fastest way to undo good work and risk uneven pigmentation. Planning ahead means you get the glow without the gamble.

Microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling for smoother, brighter skin

Microneedling uses a device with fine, sterile needles to create tiny controlled channels in the skin. Those micro-injuries are small enough to heal quickly but significant enough to trigger the body's natural repair response. Collagen and elastin production ramps up, and over the following weeks the skin becomes smoother, firmer and noticeably brighter. It is a favourite for softening fine lines, refining enlarged pores, improving the look of scarring and giving tired skin a lift.

I specifically mention microneedling radiofrequency in my reel, and it is worth explaining the difference. Standard microneedling works on the surface and upper layers. Radiofrequency microneedling, such as Morpheus8, adds gentle heat delivered through the needle tips into the deeper layers of the skin. That heat tightens existing collagen and stimulates fresh production at a level ordinary microneedling cannot reach, so it does more for laxity and deeper texture concerns as well as glow.

What a session and recovery look like

Numbing cream is applied first, so most people find the treatment very manageable. Afterwards, skin usually looks pink or flushed, a little like mild sunburn, and can feel warm for the rest of the day. With standard microneedling that settles within a day or two. With radiofrequency microneedling you may see redness, some swelling and occasionally tiny pinpoint marks for a few days longer, along with a period where the skin feels rough or slightly dry as it renews.

This is exactly why I say to do it now. You want that recovery period behind you and the collagen already building by the time you pack your case. Whether you are due a top-up or trying it for the first time, earlier is better.

BBL laser for pigmentation and sun damage

BBL, or BroadBand Light, is a form of intense pulsed light therapy. It delivers precise wavelengths of light into the skin that are absorbed by pigment and by the blood vessels responsible for redness. For anyone dealing with sun spots, freckling, age spots or a generally uneven tone, it is one of the most effective ways to lift that pigment and even things out. It also gives skin a genuine freshness and clarity that is hard to achieve with skincare alone.

When BBL targets pigmentation, the treated spots typically darken first. Over the following days they rise to the surface and flake away like coffee grounds, leaving clearer skin behind. That process is completely normal and part of how the treatment works, but it does mean your skin needs a little time and, crucially, protection from the sun while it happens.

Why BBL needs a head start

I am clear on this point in my reel: I do not want BBL patients going into direct sunlight within a few weeks of treatment. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure too soon can trigger the very pigmentation you were trying to remove. That is the whole reason to book it well ahead of a summer holiday rather than as a last-minute fix.

Get it done now, let the pigment clear, keep up with a high-factor SPF, and you travel with a more even, brighter complexion already in place. For many patients a short course spaced a few weeks apart gives the best results, which is another reason not to leave it late.

Skin boosters for deep, lasting hydration

If dull, dry or dehydrated skin is your main concern, skin boosters are the treatment I reach for. Unlike a moisturiser that sits on the surface, skin boosters are injected into the skin to deliver hydration where it actually counts. Most are based on hyaluronic acid, a substance your skin produces naturally that holds many times its own weight in water. Delivered this way, it plumps the skin from within and gives that lit-from-within quality that makes skin look healthy rather than made-up.

Profhilo is one of the best known in this category. Rather than adding volume like a traditional filler, it spreads through the skin to hydrate and stimulate collagen and elastin, improving quality, bounce and radiance. Other boosters and polynucleotide treatments work in similar territory, repairing and rejuvenating skin that has become tired, thin or lacklustre. My team can advise which suits your skin best at consultation.

What to expect from a course

Skin boosters are usually given as a short course, often two sessions a few weeks apart, with results building over the following weeks and lasting for months. Downtime is minimal. You may have small raised bumps at the injection points and the occasional bruise, both of which settle within a day or two. Because the glow develops gradually, starting a few weeks before your holiday means the results are in full swing by the time you are lying by the pool.

Injectables and giving yourself time for a review

The final piece I cover is injectables, and anti-wrinkle treatment in particular. This is where timing really pays off. Anti-wrinkle injections do not work instantly. It typically takes a few days to begin softening lines and up to two weeks to see the full effect. At Wellface, a review appointment is part of the process, so I can check how the product has settled and make any small refinements.

If you leave anti-wrinkle treatment until the week before you fly, there is no time for that review, and no time to adjust anything if you want a touch more or a slightly different balance. Booking now means you go on holiday looking relaxed and refreshed, not freshly treated. The same logic applies to other injectable treatments where a little settling time makes for a more natural, polished result.

Building your pre-holiday timeline

With Easter about five weeks out and summer beyond that, a sensible order helps you fit everything in comfortably. As a rough guide, the treatments that need the most recovery and the strictest sun avoidance come first, and the gentle finishing touches come later.

  • Several weeks ahead: start BBL laser and radiofrequency microneedling, so pigment clears and collagen builds with plenty of sun-free recovery time.
  • A few weeks ahead: begin skin boosters and anti-wrinkle treatment, allowing the glow to develop and leaving room for your injectable review.
  • Closer to travel: focus on gentle, hydrating care and diligent SPF rather than anything that stresses the skin.

Everyone's skin and holiday dates are different, so the exact plan is best mapped out at a consultation. That way I can sequence your treatments around your travel dates and your particular concerns.

Common questions about pre-holiday skin treatments

How far in advance should I book before a holiday?

As a general rule, allow at least three to four weeks for treatments like BBL and radiofrequency microneedling, and a little longer if you want a short course. Skin boosters and anti-wrinkle treatment benefit from a few weeks too, partly for the results to develop and partly to allow for a review. The reel's advice to start now, with Easter five weeks away, is exactly the right instinct.

Can I have these treatments if I already have a tan?

Laser-based treatments like BBL are generally not suitable on freshly tanned or sun-exposed skin, as this raises the risk of pigmentation changes. That is precisely why doing them before you travel, rather than after, is recommended. If you have recently been in the sun, mention it at your consultation and I will advise on the safest timing.

Which treatment is best for dull, tired skin?

It depends on the underlying cause. If dryness and dehydration are the issue, skin boosters tend to give the most noticeable glow. If texture, tone and fine lines are the concern, microneedling is a strong choice. For pigmentation and sun damage, BBL is the specialist. Often a combination gives the best overall result, which is something I will tailor to your skin.

Is there much downtime?

It varies by treatment. Skin boosters and standard microneedling involve very little, usually a day or two of minor redness or small bumps. BBL brings temporary darkening of pigmented areas that flakes away over several days. Radiofrequency microneedling can mean a few days of redness and swelling. None of it needs a great deal of hiding away, but it is another reason to schedule ahead of your trip rather than during it.

Do I still need SPF after these treatments?

Always, and especially so. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV, and consistent sun protection is what preserves your results, particularly after BBL. A high-factor broad-spectrum SPF should be part of your routine at home and abroad, whatever treatments you have had.

Ready to get your skin holiday-ready?

The simplest way to travel feeling confident in your skin is to plan a little ahead, and my team at Wellface will help you do exactly that. At a consultation, I will look at your skin, listen to your concerns and map out a treatment plan that fits around your holiday dates, whether that means BBL for sun damage, microneedling for texture, skin boosters for hydration or a considered mix of the three.

Book a consultation with me at our Cobham, Esher or Wimbledon clinics, and let's get you glowing well before you jet off. Your skin, as I always say, deserves a holiday too.
