When a tiny amount of anti-wrinkle injection relaxes the top edge of that muscle, the upper lip stops curling under quite so tightly. It gently rolls, or flips, outward. The result is that more of the rosy, vermilion part of your lip becomes visible, and the lip looks a little fuller and more defined. Crucially, nothing has been added. The lip hasn't grown in size. What's changed is how much of your existing lip you can see, and the way it sits when you smile.

That subtlety is the whole point. Most people who love their lip flip results wanted refinement rather than transformation. It's the kind of change where you look a touch more polished and your lipstick sits a little better, but nobody can quite put their finger on what you've had done.

Who tends to suit it

A lip flip works beautifully for people who already have reasonable lip volume but feel their top lip is thin on show, or vanishes when they smile widely. It's also a favourite for anyone whose upper lip curls in and reveals more gum than they'd like. Because the treatment eases how high the lip rides, it can soften the appearance of a gummy smile.

It's less suited to very thin lips. If there's simply not much lip there to begin with, flipping it outward won't create the fullness you're after, and filler is usually the better route. The honest answer for most people comes out of a proper consultation, where a doctor can look at how your lips move when you talk and smile, not just how they look at rest.

What happens during a Wellface appointment

The treatment itself is quick, which is one of its biggest appeals. Start to finish, the injecting part takes only a few minutes.

At Wellface we begin the same way our practitioner did in the reel: cleansing the area thoroughly and applying a numbing cream to the lips. The lips are sensitive, and while the injections are small, the numbing cream keeps things comfortable and gives the anaesthetic time to work while we chat through what we're doing. Once you're numb, the doctor places a small number of injections, often around four, along the border of the upper lip. In the video that's exactly what you'll hear: "four dots," placed carefully with the lips relaxed rather than pressed together.

There's a knack to keeping still and soft during it. You'll notice our practitioner gently reminding the patient to relax and stop pressing her lips together, because a tense mouth makes precise placement harder. It's a natural reflex, and part of the job is talking you through it.

After the last injection you're done. There may be one or two tiny red dots where the needle went in, and occasionally a small bump from the product that settles within minutes. Most people head straight back to work or carry on with their day.

Timing: when you'll see it and how long it lasts

Here's the part that surprises people who are used to filler. A lip flip doesn't work straight away. Because it relies on relaxing a muscle rather than adding volume, it needs time to take effect.

As our practitioner explains in the reel, "with all anti-wrinkle injection treatments, or with all muscle relaxant treatments, we need approximately 10 days to two weeks for the treatment to kick in, and then we see the results." That's completely normal for botulinum toxin. You'll often notice the first subtle changes within a few days, with the full flip settling in over roughly a fortnight. So it pays to plan ahead of any event rather than booking it for the day before.

The trade-off for that gentle, natural effect is that it doesn't last as long as filler. Because the mouth is one of the busiest areas of the face, constantly moving as you talk, eat, drink and smile, the muscle relaxant wears off faster here than it would on, say, the forehead. Most people find a lip flip lasts somewhere in the region of three to four months before the effect softens and the upper lip gradually returns to its usual position. To keep the look, you'd simply come back for a top-up two to three times a year.

Lip flip versus lip filler: how to choose

This is the question we're asked most often, and the two treatments are genuinely different tools for different jobs. Neither is better in the abstract. It depends entirely on what your lips need.

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, injected directly into the lip to add real volume, shape and structure. It's the right choice if you want fuller lips, more defined borders, a sculpted cupid's bow, or if you're looking to correct asymmetry or restore volume that's been lost over time. Results are visible immediately, they last considerably longer, usually six months to a year, and if you ever wanted to reverse them, hyaluronic acid can be dissolved.

A lip flip, by contrast, adds no volume at all. It reshapes how your existing lip sits. To summarise the practical differences:

• What's injected: filler uses hyaluronic acid; a lip flip uses anti-wrinkle injection (botulinum toxin) and no filler at all.
• The effect: filler makes lips genuinely bigger and more defined; a flip simply lifts and reveals more of the upper lip you already have.
• Timing: filler is instant; a flip takes ten to fourteen days to appear.
• Longevity: filler lasts six to twelve months; a flip lasts around three to four.

Aftercare and what to expect afterwards

The beauty of a lip flip is how little it interrupts your day. There's no meaningful downtime, and most people carry on straight away.

For the first 24 hours it's sensible to treat the area gently. Avoid vigorous exercise, very hot environments like saunas and steam rooms, and heavy pressure on the lips. As with any anti-wrinkle injection, we'd advise staying upright for a few hours rather than lying flat, and not rubbing or massaging the treated area, so the product stays exactly where it's been placed. Any tiny red marks usually fade within a few hours, and makeup can go over them once they've settled.

Because the upper lip is being relaxed, some people notice their lips feel very slightly different for the first week or so, particularly when doing precise movements like sipping through a straw, whistling or blowing. This is normal, it's mild, and it eases as your muscle and the treatment find their balance. If the dose is placed carefully by an experienced injector, this is subtle and short-lived, which is exactly why the amount used and the person holding the needle matter so much around the mouth.

Does a lip flip hurt?

Will it make my lips look bigger?

How soon before an event should I have it done?
