Microneedling for Brides: Building a Radiant Glow Before Your Wedding Day

OM Dr Olivia McCormack Published 3 April 2026 · 9 min read

There is a particular kind of skin that photographs beautifully on a wedding day. Not flawless in an airbrushed, unnatural way, but smooth, even, quietly luminous. The sort of skin that looks healthy under bright marquee lighting and holds up to hundreds of close photographs. Getting there is rarely about a single dramatic treatment the week before. It is about giving your skin enough runway to repair and renew itself properly.

In the second part of my bridal skin series, I want to talk through one of my favourite ways to prepare a bride-to-be: microneedling, and even better, microneedling combined with exosomes. My advice is simple and worth taking to heart. If you are getting married in the next six months, come and see us now. Once your skin is optimised and that healthy glow is already building, microneedling becomes the treatment that carries it home.

The key word there is time. Skin works to its own schedule, and collagen does not appear overnight. This is a slow, cumulative process, which is exactly why planning early matters so much. Below I explain how microneedling works, what a session at Wellface actually involves, why exosomes make such a good pairing, and how to build a sensible timeline around your date.

What microneedling actually does to your skin

Microneedling is sometimes called collagen induction therapy, and that name tells you almost everything you need to know. A device fitted with very fine, sterile needles creates thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the surface of the skin. These micro-injuries are small enough to heal quickly, but significant enough to switch on the skin's natural repair response.

When the skin senses these tiny channels, it sets to work rebuilding. Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing structural proteins, ramp up their output of collagen and elastin. Collagen gives skin its firmness and support. Elastin gives it that springy, resilient quality that makes younger skin bounce back. Over the following weeks, as this new collagen matures and settles, the skin looks smoother, feels firmer, and reflects light more evenly. That even light reflection is what we tend to read as a glow.

Because the effect builds gradually, microneedling is well suited to a range of everyday skin concerns rather than one dramatic fix. It can soften the look of fine lines, refine the appearance of enlarged pores, improve uneven texture and help with certain types of scarring, including old acne marks. For a bride whose main goal is simply better, healthier looking skin overall, it is one of the most versatile options available.

Microneedling versus the home derma roller

Many people first come across microneedling through the small derma rollers sold for home use, and it is worth being clear about the difference. A professional treatment uses a medical device with precisely controlled needle depths, carried out on cleansed skin, often with numbing cream, by a trained clinician who adjusts the technique across different areas of the face. Home rollers tend to be shallow, harder to keep properly sterile, and much less consistent.

My view is straightforward. A wedding is not the moment to experiment with a gadget from a drawer. In clinic, the depth is tailored to the area being treated, the skin is prepared correctly, and the whole process is done to a medical standard. That control is what delivers results while keeping the skin safe.

Why exosomes take the treatment further

The part I get particularly enthusiastic about is adding exosomes. Once the microneedling has created those tiny channels, the skin is briefly far more receptive to whatever is applied to it. That short window is the ideal moment to deliver something genuinely useful into the deeper layers.

Exosomes are tiny messenger particles rich in growth factors, peptides, lipids and other signalling molecules. Think of them as instructions for your skin cells, telling them how to repair and regenerate more efficiently. Applied straight after microneedling, they slip through the freshly made channels and reach the deeper skin where they can do the most good. Normally, particles like these cannot penetrate intact skin, so the two treatments genuinely work better together than either does alone.

The practical benefits tend to show up in two ways. First, the redness and mild swelling that follow microneedling often settle a little faster, thanks to the soothing, anti-inflammatory character of exosomes. Second, the rejuvenating effect is amplified, with many people noticing smoother texture, more even tone and a brighter finish over the weeks that follow. For a bride, that combination of quicker recovery and enhanced results is exactly the point.

What a session at Wellface involves

A microneedling appointment is calm and methodical. I begin by thoroughly cleansing the skin, then usually apply a numbing cream and leave it to take effect for around twenty minutes. This step matters, because it keeps the treatment comfortable. Most people describe the sensation as a light prickling or vibration rather than anything painful.

The microneedling itself takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes for a full face, with the device passed methodically across each area and the depth adjusted for more delicate zones. If you are having exosomes, they are applied immediately afterwards while those micro-channels are still open, then left on the skin to absorb. I will advise you to leave the skin bare for the rest of the day so the exosomes have an uninterrupted window to work.

Immediately after, expect your skin to look flushed and feel warm, rather like a mild sunburn. There may be a little tightness. For most people this redness calms noticeably within twenty four to forty eight hours, and exosomes often shorten that phase. This is precisely why the timing of your treatments around the wedding needs a little thought, which brings us to the plan.

Aftercare in the days that follow

Good aftercare protects the work you have just had done. For the first day, keep the skin clean and leave products off, letting it breathe and recover. After that, keep to gentle, non-irritating skincare and plenty of hydration.

Avoid the things that stress freshly treated skin: no strong actives such as retinoids or exfoliating acids for about a week, no vigorous workouts, saunas or hot yoga for the first day or two while the skin is warm, and no picking at any flaking. Sun protection is non-negotiable. A daily broad-spectrum SPF shields the new collagen you are working so hard to build and helps keep your tone even, which is doubly important in the run-up to a wedding.

Building your bridal timeline

The single most useful thing I say in this reel is about timing. I want brides to allow enough time to fit in at least three sessions before the big day, and to start sooner rather than later. There is solid reasoning behind this.

Collagen production is a gradual process. A single session gives your skin a lift, but the more meaningful, lasting improvements in texture, tone and firmness come from a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart, giving the skin time to repair and regenerate between visits. Sessions are typically spaced around four weeks apart, so three sessions comfortably spans roughly three months. Add the weeks needed for that final round of new collagen to mature, and you can see why six months out is the ideal moment to book your first consultation.

Starting early also builds in breathing room. It means your final session lands well clear of the wedding, so any temporary redness has long since faded and your skin is settled and glowing rather than freshly treated. Nobody wants to be timing their recovery down to the last day. The general rule is to keep any new or more intensive treatment at least a couple of weeks away from the date itself, and ideally further. Planning ahead removes that pressure entirely.

Microneedling also sits comfortably alongside the other skin work I might recommend as part of your preparation, from a considered skincare routine to hydrating treatments that get your glow going in the first place. Your consultation is where all of this is mapped out around your date, your skin and your priorities.

Common questions about bridal microneedling

Does microneedling hurt?

Most people find it very manageable. A numbing cream is applied beforehand and left to work, so the treatment usually feels like a light prickling or vibration rather than genuine pain. Some areas of the face are more sensitive than others, and I adjust accordingly. Any tenderness afterwards tends to feel like mild sunburn and settles within a day or two.

How soon will I see results?

You may notice an immediate freshness and a subtle plumping in the days after your first session, partly because the skin is holding a little more moisture. The real improvements in texture, firmness and tone develop over the following weeks as new collagen forms, and they build with each session. This is exactly why a course, started in good time, works so much better than a single last-minute appointment.

Is there any downtime?

Redness and mild swelling on the day are normal, easing over the next twenty four to forty eight hours, and exosomes often help it settle faster. Many people feel comfortable heading back to normal life the same afternoon, with makeup usually fine to reapply after a day. Plan a treatment for a quieter part of your week rather than the morning of a big event, and you will barely notice the recovery.

Can I combine microneedling with other bridal treatments?

Yes, and this is one of its strengths. Microneedling fits neatly into a wider skin plan alongside good skincare and hydrating treatments. The important thing is sequencing and spacing, which I will organise so that treatments complement each other and your skin is at its best on the day. Trying to layer everything too close to the wedding is the mistake to avoid.

How many sessions will I need?

For bridal preparation, I suggest aiming for at least three sessions, spaced roughly a month apart. Some skin concerns may benefit from a few more. Your exact plan depends on your starting point and your goals, which is what the consultation is for.
