Morpheus8 and Facial Fat: Will It Melt the Fat in Your Face?

YT Dr Yasmin Tayeb Published 24 March 2025 · 10 min read

It is one of the questions I hear most often, morning, noon and night. Someone books a Morpheus8 consultation, sits down, and before we have even talked through their skin, they ask: is this going to melt the fat in my face? It is a fair worry. Nobody wants to walk out looking gaunt or hollow when what they came for was firmer, lifted, more defined skin.

As a doctor and the founder of Wellface, let me explain that the honest answer is that it depends entirely on your goals and, just as importantly, on how the treatment is delivered. Morpheus8 is designed to tighten, lift and remodel. In the right hands it does exactly that without stripping away the volume that keeps a face looking healthy. But the same device can also be used deliberately to reduce fat in places where fat is unwanted, like a double chin or a soft jawline. The difference between those two outcomes comes down to depth, energy and technique, which is another way of saying it comes down to the person holding the handpiece.

At Wellface, every Morpheus8 treatment starts with a proper consultation for precisely this reason. I assess your skin, talk through what you actually want, and then set the device to match. This article explains how that works, why the settings matter so much, and how I approach fat reduction when it genuinely forms part of someone's plan.

What Morpheus8 actually does to the skin

Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling device. It combines two things that work well together. First, a set of fine needles creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, the same principle behind traditional microneedling. Second, radiofrequency energy is delivered through the tips of those needles, heating the tissue at a precise depth beneath the surface.

That heat is the clever part. When the deeper layers of the skin reach a certain temperature, the body reads it as a signal to repair and rebuild. Over the following weeks and months it lays down fresh collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep skin firm and springy. The result is gradual tightening, smoother texture and better definition, without any cutting or stitching.

Because the treatment reaches into the dermis and, at deeper settings, the layer just beneath it, it does far more than a surface treatment ever could. It is often described as a non-surgical way to firm jowls, soften early sagging along the jaw and neck, and refine the overall shape of the lower face. Most people notice a subtle tightening within the first week or two, but the real change builds slowly as new collagen matures, typically peaking somewhere around the three to six month mark.

The role of adjustable depth

Here is the detail that answers the fat question. The needles on a Morpheus8 handpiece can be set to different depths, and the energy can be dialled up or down. Shallower depths concentrate the effect in the skin itself, stimulating collagen and improving texture and firmness. Deeper settings reach the fibrous layer where fat sits, and at higher energy the heat can contract and remodel that fatty tissue.

So the same machine can either leave facial fat well alone or deliberately target it, depending on how it is programmed for that particular patient. There is no single Morpheus8 setting. There is only the setting that suits your face and your goals, chosen and adjusted by the clinician treating you.

So will it melt the fat in your face?

For most people coming in for facial skin tightening, the answer is no, and that is by design. When the aim is to firm the cheeks, lift the jawline or smooth the neck while keeping the face looking full and healthy, the treatment is delivered at depths and energies that stimulate collagen without significantly disturbing the fat pads that give the face its youthful shape.

This is exactly where skill matters. Facial fat is not the enemy. It is part of what makes a face look rested and well. Aggressive, poorly judged settings on a face that does not need fat reduction could leave someone looking flatter or more drawn than they started, which is the opposite of what almost everyone wants. It is the wrong instrument in the wrong hands, or the right instrument in the wrong hands, problem I often talk about. An excellent device set incorrectly gives a poor result. The same device, set thoughtfully, gives a beautiful one.

I am advanced trained in exactly this. The bespoke depth and intensity I choose for your face is what protects your volume while still delivering the tightening and collagen stimulation you came for. That judgement, rather than the machine itself, is what separates a natural, lifted result from a disappointing one.

When fat reduction is actually the goal

Of course, not everyone wants their fat left alone. Plenty of patients come in bothered by a fullness under the chin that never seems to shift, however much they exercise. Others want a little contouring elsewhere on the body: the tummy, the back of the arms, the thighs. For these people, a degree of fat reduction is not a risk to avoid but the very thing they are asking for.

Morpheus8 can be used this way. By treating at deeper settings with higher energy, the radiofrequency heat targets the fatty layer and, alongside the skin tightening it is already known for, helps to reduce and remodel it. That combination is genuinely useful under the chin, where loose skin and stubborn fat often go together. Tightening alone might firm the skin but leave the fullness. Fat reduction alone might soften the volume but leave loose skin behind. Doing both, carefully, is what gives a cleaner, more defined jawline and chin.

Body contouring with Morpheus8

The body handpieces reach deeper than the facial ones, which makes them suited to larger, thicker-skinned areas. On the abdomen, arms or thighs, the treatment can firm crepey or lax skin while addressing pockets of fat that sit close to the surface. Results on the body tend to take a little longer to show than on the face, simply because the skin there is thicker and the remodelling process takes its time, but the principle is the same: controlled heat, delivered at the right depth, prompting the body to tighten and reshape.

None of this is decided on the day without discussion. Where fat reduction is part of the plan, I talk it through fully at the consultation so that patient and clinician are agreed on the goal before a single pass is made. That is the only responsible way to do it.

What a Morpheus8 session at Wellface involves

Every treatment begins with that consultation, and it is not a formality. This is where I look closely at your skin, assess laxity, texture and the areas that concern you, and listen to what you actually want to change. From there I agree whether the aim is pure tightening, targeted fat reduction, or a mix of both, and set the treatment plan accordingly.

On the day of treatment, a medical-grade numbing cream is applied first and left to work for around half an hour so you are comfortable. A face and neck treatment usually takes somewhere in the region of thirty to forty-five minutes once you are numb. You will feel warmth and some pressure as the handpiece passes over the skin, but most people find it very manageable.

Afterwards the skin looks pink or flushed, a bit like mild sunburn, and may feel warm and tight. This is normal and a sign the treatment has done its job. Redness typically settles over one to three days, sometimes with a little light flaking or a temporary sandpaper texture as the surface renews. Larger body areas can take a touch longer to calm down. Most people are comfortable getting back to everyday life within a day or two.

Aftercare that protects your result

Good aftercare makes a real difference to how well and how quickly the skin recovers. In the first few days, keep the area clean, use a gentle non-foaming cleanser and pat rather than rub the skin dry. Support the skin with a simple hydrating serum and a bland moisturiser, and be strict with a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, because freshly treated skin is far more vulnerable to the sun and to pigmentation. Leave active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids out of your routine for around five to seven days, and skip saunas, hot yoga and vigorous heat while the skin is settling. If any pinpoint crusts form, let them shed on their own rather than picking at them.

How many sessions and how long results last

Morpheus8 is not usually a one-and-done treatment, though some people with early laxity are happy after a single session. More often a course of around three sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, gives the best result. That spacing gives the skin time to build collagen properly between visits, so each session layers on the progress of the last.

Because the improvement comes from your own collagen, it develops gradually and then keeps building. Many people see their skin continuing to firm and refine for months after the final session. The results tend to be long-lasting, often quoted in the range of a year or more, though natural ageing carries on regardless, so a maintenance session once a year or so helps hold the gains.

Common questions about Morpheus8 and facial fat

Will Morpheus8 make my face look hollow or gaunt?

Not when it is done properly. For patients who want tightening rather than fat reduction, the treatment is delivered at depths and energies that stimulate collagen while leaving the facial fat pads intact. The skill lies in choosing settings that suit your face, which is exactly what the consultation and an advanced-trained clinician are for.

Can Morpheus8 really reduce a double chin?

It can help. At deeper settings the radiofrequency heat targets the fatty tissue under the chin while also tightening the overlying skin. Because a double chin is often a combination of both fat and laxity, addressing the two together tends to give a more defined jawline than tackling either one alone. Whether Morpheus8 is the right choice for your particular chin is something I assess at consultation.

Is Morpheus8 suitable for the body?

Yes. Using the deeper body handpieces, Morpheus8 can firm lax skin and contour areas like the abdomen, arms and thighs. The skin on the body is thicker, so results usually take a little longer to appear than on the face, but the underlying process of controlled heating and collagen renewal is the same.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as very tolerable. A numbing cream is applied before we start, and while you will feel heat and some pressure during the treatment, the discomfort is generally mild and short-lived. Any warmth or sensitivity afterwards tends to settle within a day or two.

How soon will I see results?

You may notice a subtle tightening and glow within the first week or two, but the meaningful change builds over time as new collagen forms. Most people see clear improvement from around four to six weeks, with results continuing to develop and peak somewhere around three to six months after treatment.

Talk it through with me

The single most important decision with Morpheus8 is not the machine, it is the person using it. The same device can tighten and lift while preserving your facial volume, or it can target unwanted fat where you actually want it gone, and getting the right outcome depends on a clinician who understands precisely how to set and use it for your face and your goals.

If you have been wondering whether Morpheus8 is right for you, or you simply want to know what it could do for your skin, jawline or body, come and have a proper conversation with me. Consultations are available at our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon clinics, and I would be glad to assess your skin and map out a plan that fits what you actually want.
