Morpheus8 in Surrey: How RF Microneedling Tightens Skin and Sharpens the Jawline

OM Dr Olivia McCormack Published 9 August 2024 · 9 min read

There's a particular kind of change most people want in their thirties and forties that skincare alone can't quite reach. The skin still looks well, but it's lost a little of its snap. Pores seem more noticeable than they used to. The jawline feels softer than it did, and by the afternoon the whole face can look a touch tired. This is exactly the territory Morpheus8 was built for.

At Wellface, I recently walked one of my patients, Zoe, through her first ever Morpheus8 session. Zoe came in wanting a sharper jawline, less of the fullness that had crept in under her chin, and an overall lift in radiance. She was, in her own words, terrified of needles, and left describing the treatment as a warm, vibrating sensation that was far more manageable than she'd feared. That's a common story with this treatment, and it's worth explaining properly what's actually happening under the skin and why the results tend to keep improving for months.

Morpheus8 isn't a quick facial or a passing trend. It's a device that works at the deeper structural level of the skin, and understanding how it does that helps you decide whether it's the right choice for you.

What Morpheus8 actually is

Morpheus8 combines two well-established ideas into one device: microneedling and radiofrequency energy. On their own, each is useful. Together, they reach further than either can manage alone.

Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. The body reads these as small injuries and responds by producing fresh collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and springy. Traditional microneedling works mainly at the surface. Morpheus8 takes it deeper. The needles are insulated so that they deliver radiofrequency energy from their tips into the lower layers of the skin, and in some cases into the fibrous tissue and superficial fat beneath it.

That radiofrequency energy heats the tissue in a precise, targeted way. Heat is the trigger that tells the skin to remodel. It causes existing collagen to contract, which gives an immediate tightening effect, and it kick-starts the slower process of building new collagen over the following weeks and months. Because I can adjust how deep the needles travel, the treatment can be tailored to different areas and different concerns on the same face. A delicate region near the eyes needs a shallower, gentler approach than the jawline or the area under the chin, where more remodelling is wanted.

The practical upshot is a treatment that addresses several things at once: skin texture and enlarged pores at the surface, and laxity, sagging and definition deeper down. It's the combination that makes it so useful for the concerns Zoe described.

The concerns Morpheus8 is best at

Jawline and chin definition

This is one of the treatments people ask about most. As we age, the skin along the jaw loses elasticity and the fat pads shift and settle lower on the face. The clean line between jaw and neck softens. Morpheus8 tackles this from two directions. The radiofrequency energy tightens the overlying skin, and when treated at the deeper settings it can help address a little of the fullness under the chin, encouraging the area to look more contoured. It won't replace surgery for significant sagging, but for early to moderate laxity it can genuinely sharpen the line and restore some of the definition that's been lost. This was the main reason Zoe came in, and it's a very typical starting point.

Skin texture and enlarged pores

Rough patches, uneven texture and pores that look larger than you'd like all come down to how the skin's surface and its supporting collagen are behaving. By stimulating collagen just beneath the surface, Morpheus8 helps refine the skin's texture and can make pores appear smaller as the surrounding skin firms up around them. Over a course of treatment, skin tends to feel smoother to the touch and reflects light more evenly, which is a large part of what we recognise as a healthy complexion.

Dull skin and lost glow

Radiance is really a function of skin health. When collagen is plentiful and skin is well supported, it looks luminous. When it thins and slackens, it can look flat and tired regardless of how good your skincare is. The collagen remodelling that Morpheus8 sets in motion is what produces that rejuvenated glow patients describe. It's a gradual brightening rather than an instant one, and it's the reason results look better at three months than they do at three weeks.

Skin laxity and sagging

Mild to moderate laxity is where Morpheus8 does some of its best work. The deep heating causes immediate tissue contraction and then longer-term tightening as new collagen forms. Cheeks, jawline, the area under the chin and the neck all respond well. For patients who want firmer, more lifted skin without surgery and without the longer recovery of ablative lasers, it sits in a very useful middle ground.

What a session at Wellface involves

Everything starts with a consultation. One of our doctors will look at your skin, talk through what's bothering you and decide whether Morpheus8 is the right tool or whether something else would serve you better. This matters, because the treatment can be adjusted so precisely that the plan should be built around your face specifically.

On the day of treatment, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied and left to work for around half an hour. This is the step that makes the treatment comfortable, and it's why Zoe found the experience far gentler than she expected. Once the area is numb, the device is passed over the skin in sections. Most patients describe a warm sensation with a light vibration or pressure, exactly as Zoe did. Treatment of the full face and jawline usually takes somewhere in the region of thirty to sixty minutes depending on the areas being covered.

Afterwards the skin will look flushed, rather like mild sunburn, and you may notice a fine grid pattern from the needle tips along with some warmth. This is entirely normal and settles quickly.

Downtime, aftercare and results

One of the reasons Morpheus8 has become so popular is that the recovery is manageable for most working adults. Expect redness and a feeling of tightness or heat for the first day or two. Some people notice slight swelling, tiny pinpoint marks or a sandpapery texture as the skin heals, and this typically fades within a few days. Many people are comfortable returning to normal life quickly, though it's sensible to plan the treatment when you don't have a major event in the immediate days afterwards.

For the first day, keep the skin clean and avoid heavy makeup, hot showers, intense exercise and anything that heats the face. After that, gentle cleansing, a rich moisturiser and diligent SPF are the priorities. Sun protection genuinely matters here, because freshly treated skin is more vulnerable and because protecting your new collagen is part of getting the best result. I'll give you tailored advice, including when to reintroduce active ingredients like retinoids.

Results build gradually. You may see some early tightening within a week or two, but the real change comes as collagen rebuilds over the following two to three months. Most people benefit from a short course of sessions, often around three, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, to get the fullest result. Once that's done, the improvements typically last well over a year, and many patients choose a maintenance session annually to keep things looking their best.

How Morpheus8 compares to other options

It helps to see where Morpheus8 fits alongside the other treatments we offer. Standard microneedling and treatments like Aquagold work beautifully on surface texture and glow, but they don't reach the depth needed for meaningful tightening. Injectable treatments such as Profhilo and polynucleotides improve skin quality and hydration and are wonderful for a rejuvenated, healthy look, but they aren't primarily about lifting or contouring. Dermal filler restores volume and can define the jaw, but it adds structure rather than tightening the skin itself.

Morpheus8 occupies the space where skin quality meets skin tightening. For someone whose main concern is laxity and definition, alongside texture and pores, it often makes more sense than any of those alone. In many cases the best plan combines treatments, and that's a conversation worth having at your consultation rather than deciding in advance.

Common questions about Morpheus8

Does Morpheus8 hurt?

With topical numbing cream applied beforehand, most people find it very tolerable. The usual description is warmth with a vibrating or prickling sensation, more intense over bonier areas like the jawline. Zoe, who came in nervous about needles, got through her first session comfortably and was surprised by how manageable it felt.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people see a good change from a single session, but a course of around three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart tends to give the most complete result. I'll recommend a plan based on your skin and your goals at the consultation.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Some tightening can appear within a couple of weeks, but the main results develop over two to three months as new collagen forms. Once your course is complete, results commonly last beyond a year, with many patients topping up annually.

Is there much downtime?

Expect redness and a feeling of heat for a day or two, sometimes with mild swelling or a fine grid pattern on the skin. Most people are back to their normal routine quickly, and makeup can usually be worn again within a day or so once any sensitivity has settled.

Who is a good candidate?

Morpheus8 suits people with early to moderate skin laxity, uneven texture, enlarged pores or a softening jawline who want firmer, smoother skin without surgery. A consultation is the only reliable way to know whether it's right for you, as some concerns are better addressed with a different or combined approach.
