Morpheus8 Explained: How RF Microneedling Tightens Skin, Softens Scars and Refines Pores

YT Dr Yasmin Tayeb Published 15 June 2024 · 9 min read

If you have started to notice your jawline softening, pores that look more open than they used to, or the fine crepiness that creeps in with the years, you have probably come across the name Morpheus8. It is one of the most talked about skin tightening treatments in aesthetics, and for good reason. It works on the deeper structure of the skin rather than just the surface.

In a recent reel, I walked through exactly why so many of my patients ask for this treatment and what makes it different from microneedling on its own. The short version is that Morpheus8 combines two proven approaches, microneedling and radiofrequency, into a single session. Used together they do more than either could alone.

This article unpacks how that combination works, what happens during an appointment, the concerns it tackles best, and how to think about downtime and results. Whether the issue is skin laxity, texture, enlarged pores or scarring, the mechanism is the same, and understanding it helps you decide if Morpheus8 is right for you.

What Morpheus8 actually is

Morpheus8 is a fractional radiofrequency microneedling device. That phrase packs in three ideas, so it is worth slowing down on each one.

Microneedling uses a set of very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. As I put it, you are causing a tiny, deliberate trauma. The body reads those micro-channels as damage that needs repairing, and it responds by ramping up collagen and elastin production. This is the same natural healing cascade that keeps skin firm and plump when we are young, only here we are switching it back on where it has slowed down.

Radiofrequency is the second layer. As the needles reach their target depth, they deliver radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermis. That energy gently heats the tissue, and controlled heat is a powerful trigger for collagen remodelling. It causes existing collagen fibres to contract and encourages the body to lay down new, better organised collagen over the following weeks and months. The result is skin that is thicker, sturdier and tighter, in my words.

The word fractional matters too. The device treats the skin in a grid of tiny points rather than resurfacing the whole surface, so untreated skin sits between each channel and speeds up healing. One of the quiet advantages of radiofrequency is that it does not target pigment, which is why it is considered safe across a wide range of skin tones. I make this point clearly: the treatment is appropriate for adults of any age group and any ethnic background.

Why the combination beats microneedling alone

Microneedling on its own is a genuinely useful treatment. It brightens the complexion, refines texture and gives that healthy post-facial glow because of the collagen it stimulates near the surface. But its reach is limited to the more superficial layers of the skin.

Radiofrequency changes the depth of the conversation. By delivering heat below the surface, Morpheus8 remodels the deeper dermis and the layer just beneath it, which is exactly where laxity and sagging originate. This is the reason the two together produce, as I describe, a massive improvement compared with either treatment used in isolation.

Think of it as working on two floors of the same building at once. Microneedling refreshes the upper layers so the skin looks smoother and more radiant. Radiofrequency reinforces the foundations so the whole structure sits tighter and firmer. When collagen is being rebuilt at both levels, the visible changes are more dramatic and they hold better over time.

The concerns Morpheus8 is best at

Morpheus8 is a versatile treatment, but there are four areas where it consistently earns its reputation.

Skin laxity and a softening jawline

As we age, collagen breaks down faster than we replace it, and the scaffolding that holds the face taut begins to loosen. This shows up first around the lower face, where the jawline blurs and the skin along the jaw and neck starts to feel loose. The deep collagen remodelling that radiofrequency drives is precisely what helps here. My patients often notice a firmer, more defined jawline and skin that feels tighter to the touch. It is a non-surgical way to address early to moderate sagging before anyone starts thinking about lifts or more invasive options.

Enlarged pores and rough texture

Open pores are largely a question of skin quality. When the collagen around a pore is weak, the pore loses its support and appears larger. By thickening and firming the surrounding skin, Morpheus8 helps pores look visibly smaller. At the same time, the microneedling component smooths uneven texture, so the overall surface feels more refined and looks more even. I note that pores massively shrink and the texture becomes so much better, and this pairing of pore refinement with a smoother finish is one of the treatment's most popular effects.

Scarring, including acne scars

Scarring responds particularly well to energy-based devices. Acne scars, in particular, are caused by tethered, disorganised collagen sitting below a depressed area of skin. By creating controlled injury and stimulating fresh, better organised collagen, Morpheus8 helps to remodel scar tissue and lift depressed scars over a course of sessions. I specifically highlight that even patients troubled by acne scarring can see real improvement. It is a slower process than tightening loose skin, and it usually needs a series of treatments, but the changes can be significant.

Crepey skin on the body

Morpheus8 is not just a facial treatment. Because the needle depth can be adjusted, it works well on the neck and decolletage, and on the body too. I run through the possibilities: crepey skin above the knees, caesarean scars, stretch marks, and the loose skin behind the upper arms. These are areas that are notoriously hard to treat and where the deeper penetration of Morpheus8 comes into its own.

What a Morpheus8 session at Wellface involves

Once you have had a consultation to confirm the treatment suits your skin and goals, the appointment follows a fairly predictable pattern.

The skin is cleansed thoroughly, and a numbing cream is applied and left to take effect for around half an hour. This makes the procedure comfortable. When I begin, the handpiece is passed methodically across the treatment area, and the needles deliver their radiofrequency energy at the chosen depth for that region of the face or body. You will feel warmth and some pressure, and most people describe it as very tolerable thanks to the numbing.

The treatment depth is tailored to the area. Thinner, more delicate zones are treated more conservatively, while regions that need deeper remodelling can be reached with longer needle settings. A full face typically takes somewhere between forty minutes and an hour once numbing is accounted for. Body areas vary depending on size.

Because collagen remodelling is a gradual process, I almost always recommend Morpheus8 as a course rather than a one-off. Most patients do best with around three sessions spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, though the exact plan depends on the concern being treated and the condition of your skin. Scarring, for instance, often benefits from more sessions than simple tightening.

Downtime, aftercare and results

One of the appeals of Morpheus8 is that it delivers deep results without the recovery of ablative laser or surgery. Immediately afterwards the skin looks red and feels warm, rather like mild sunburn, and you may see a fine grid pattern from the needles along with some swelling. This usually calms over the following one to three days. Many people are comfortable returning to normal life quickly, though the visible redness means most prefer to plan the treatment when they do not have anything high profile the next day.

Aftercare is straightforward but worth taking seriously. Keep the skin clean and avoid makeup for the first day or so, while the micro-channels close. Skip active ingredients such as retinoids and acids for a few days, and be gentle with cleansing. The single most important step is sun protection: apply a high factor SPF diligently and avoid direct sun and heat, including saunas and intense exercise, for the first few days while the skin settles.

As for results, do not expect the finished article overnight. You may notice an initial glow within the first week or two, but the real work happens beneath the surface as new collagen forms. Improvements build gradually over the following three to six months, which is why a course of treatments produces such a cumulative effect. Firmer skin, a tighter jawline, refined pores and smoother texture emerge over that window and continue to develop between sessions.

Common questions about Morpheus8

Is Morpheus8 painful?

Most of my patients find it comfortable. A topical numbing cream is applied before the treatment begins, so what you feel is warmth and pressure rather than sharp pain. Areas with thinner skin or over bone can feel a little more intense, but the sensation is brief and well managed.

How many sessions will I need?

A typical plan is around three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, though this is tailored to your concern. Skin tightening and pore refinement often respond within a standard course, while deeper acne scarring may need additional sessions. I will map out a realistic plan at your consultation.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Because the radiofrequency energy does not target pigment in the way that some lasers do, Morpheus8 has a strong safety record across all skin types. I confirm it is appropriate for any ethnic background when carried out by an experienced practitioner.

When will I see results?

Some people notice an early glow and slight tightening within a week or two, but collagen remodelling is gradual. The most meaningful changes develop over three to six months as new collagen matures, and they continue to improve across a course of treatments.

Can Morpheus8 be used on the body?

Absolutely. The adjustable needle depth means it works well beyond the face, on the neck and decolletage as well as on the body. Common body areas include crepey skin above the knees, the upper arms, stretch marks and caesarean or other scars.
