The Summer of MOXI: How MOXI and BBL Hero Work Together for Brighter, Clearer Skin
Every so often a treatment arrives that people genuinely can't stop talking about, and this year MOXI is that treatment. It has become the go-to for anyone who wants their skin to look clearer and more even without disappearing from view for a week. Pair it with BBL Hero, our broadband light workhorse, and you have one of the most effective combinations we offer for tackling pigmentation, patchy tone, rough texture and that flat, tired look that skin can take on after a summer in the sun.
The appeal is simple. Most of us want brighter, fresher skin, but very few of us can afford several days of peeling and hiding indoors. MOXI and BBL Hero were designed for exactly that middle ground. They work at a level that produces real, visible change while keeping downtime short enough that most people carry on with normal life almost straight away.
This is a doctor-led decision, though, not an off-the-shelf package. What follows explains how each treatment works, why they are so good together, what a session actually feels like, and how to know whether the duo is right for your skin.
What MOXI actually is
MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser made by Sciton. That description sounds technical, so it helps to break it down. Fractional means the laser doesn't treat the whole surface of your skin in one continuous sheet. Instead it delivers thousands of tiny microscopic columns of energy, leaving healthy untouched skin in between each one. Those islands of intact skin are what allow you to heal quickly, because your body has plenty of surrounding tissue to draw on for repair.
Non-ablative means the laser doesn't remove or vaporise the top layer of skin the way a more aggressive resurfacing laser would. It heats the tissue beneath the surface rather than stripping it away. The result is a gentler experience with far less downtime, while still prompting the skin to renew itself and produce fresh collagen.
MOXI uses a 1927nm wavelength, which is particularly good at reaching pigment and at encouraging cellular turnover. In practice that means it targets the uneven brown patches, the general dullness and the early textural changes that show up long before anyone would consider a heavier treatment. A single pass takes only a few minutes across the whole face, and the sensation is warm rather than sharp.
The idea of prejuvenation
MOXI has become closely associated with a word you'll hear more and more: prejuvenation. The thinking is that you don't have to wait until sun damage and fine lines are firmly established before you do something about them. By treating skin earlier and more regularly, you keep it in better condition for longer rather than trying to reverse years of change all at once. MOXI suits that approach beautifully because it is gentle enough to have in a series, and it works across a wide range of ages and skin types.
What BBL Hero brings to the pairing
BBL Hero is Sciton's broadband light platform, and the Hero name stands for High Energy Rapid Output. It belongs to the same family as intense pulsed light, but it is faster, more powerful and more comfortable than the older IPL machines many people will have encountered before.
Rather than a single laser wavelength, BBL delivers a broad spectrum of light that can be filtered and tuned to target specific problems. For pigmentation, the light is absorbed by the melanin that makes up brown spots and sun damage. That energy heats the pigment, which then rises to the surface over the following days and flakes away, leaving clearer skin behind. BBL also targets the tiny broken capillaries and redness that contribute to an uneven, blotchy complexion, and the warmth it delivers stimulates the deeper layers of skin to behave more like younger skin.
Where MOXI works through fractional laser columns, BBL treats the surface more broadly and is especially strong on colour, meaning brown pigment and red vessels. That difference is the whole reason the two make such natural partners.
Why MOXI and BBL Hero are better together
Think of it as treating skin from two complementary angles. BBL Hero goes after the colour problems, the sun spots, the freckling, the diffuse redness and the general unevenness of tone. MOXI goes after texture, tone and turnover, refining the surface, softening fine lines and giving that overall polished, refreshed quality. One addresses what you see in terms of pigment; the other addresses how the skin feels and reflects light.
Used on the same day, they cover far more ground than either could alone. BBL clears the pigment, MOXI resurfaces and brightens, and the two effects stack to produce a clearer, glowier, more uniform result. Because both are relatively gentle by laser standards, combining them doesn't dramatically increase your downtime the way stacking two aggressive treatments would.
This is exactly the combination the reel was pointing to when it called this the summer of MOXI. On its own MOXI is excellent. Paired with BBL Hero it becomes a genuinely comprehensive rejuvenation treatment for people who want maximum improvement with minimum disruption.
The concerns this duo is best for
The pairing was chosen with a specific set of skin concerns in mind, and it handles them well.
- Pigmentation and sun damage. This is where the combination really shines. BBL lifts brown spots and sun-induced pigment, and MOXI evens out the background tone so the skin looks uniform rather than patchy.
- Dull, tired skin that has lost its glow. By clearing surface debris and prompting fresh cell turnover, both treatments leave skin looking noticeably brighter and more luminous.
- Uneven texture and enlarged pores. MOXI's fractional resurfacing refines the surface and smooths roughness over a series of sessions.
- Fine lines and early wrinkles. The collagen stimulation from both devices helps soften the finer lines, particularly around the eyes and mouth, though this is a gradual improvement rather than an overnight one.
BBL also has a role in scalp treatments for some patients dealing with hair thinning, as the light energy can be used to support the scalp environment. If hair loss is your main concern, a consultation is the right place to discuss whether light-based treatment, PRP or another approach suits you best, as this is very individual.
What a session involves
We always start with a consultation and a proper look at your skin. Pigmentation can be deceptive, and it matters that a doctor assesses what is on the surface versus what sits deeper, because that changes how we set up the devices and, occasionally, whether laser is the right choice at all.
On treatment day your skin is cleansed and, for MOXI, a numbing cream is usually applied and left to work for around twenty minutes. The BBL portion involves a cool gel and a series of light pulses; most people describe the feeling as a brief warm snap, like a light elastic band, softened by the cooling of the device. The MOXI pass feels warm and prickly but is over quickly, as the laser itself only takes a few minutes to cover the whole face. Protective eyewear is worn throughout.
All in, including numbing, you should expect to be with us for around an hour. It is comfortable enough that many people describe it as surprisingly easy for something that produces this level of result.
What to expect afterwards
Straight after treatment your skin will feel warm and look flushed, rather like mild sunburn. That settles over the first day or two. Over the following days pigment treated by BBL will often darken first, coming to the surface as tiny coffee-ground specks before sloughing away, so a temporary phase of looking slightly speckled is completely normal and a sign it's working. MOXI can leave the skin feeling a little rough or sandpapery for a few days as the surface renews, and some fine flaking is expected around days three to five.
Most people are comfortable being out and about the same day, and makeup can usually go on within a day or two if needed. The results build over the following one to two weeks as the pigment clears and fresh skin comes through, with the collagen benefits developing more gradually over the weeks after that. A course of treatments generally gives the best outcome, and we'll talk through a realistic plan for your skin at consultation.
Aftercare that protects your results
The single most important thing you can do is protect your skin from the sun. These treatments target sun damage, so exposing fresh skin to UV afterwards undoes the good work and risks new pigmentation. A high-factor broad-spectrum SPF worn every day is non-negotiable, and we'd ask you to be especially diligent in the weeks around your treatment.
Keep the skin cool and hydrated in the first few days, avoid hot baths, saunas, strenuous exercise and anything that heats the face for around forty-eight hours, and leave any flaking or specking to shed naturally rather than picking at it. Pause active ingredients like retinoids and strong acids for a few days either side. We'll give you tailored guidance based on your skin and, where appropriate, recommend medical-grade skincare such as ZO Skin Health or iS Clinical to support and extend your results.
Common questions about MOXI and BBL Hero
Is this treatment safe for darker skin tones?
MOXI is designed to be suitable across a wide range of skin types, and its non-ablative approach makes it a considered choice for many people who might not be candidates for more aggressive lasers. BBL settings, however, need careful adjustment for deeper skin tones, and pigment-focused light treatment always carries more nuance the darker the skin. This is precisely why a doctor-led assessment matters. We will only proceed with settings we're confident are right for you, and in some cases we may recommend an alternative.
How many sessions will I need?
Many people see a lovely improvement after a single combined session, particularly in brightness and pigment. For more established sun damage, uneven texture or fine lines, a short course spaced a few weeks apart usually gives the most complete and lasting result. We'll suggest a plan at your consultation based on what your skin actually needs rather than a fixed package.
Can I have it done in summer?
One of MOXI's strengths is that it is gentle enough to be considered year-round, and it doesn't rely on the same restrictions as some heavier resurfacing lasers. That said, pigment-targeting treatments and fresh sun exposure don't mix well, so diligent sun protection is essential whenever you have them. If you're planning a beach holiday, we'll usually advise timing your sessions around it.
How is this different from a Hydrafacial?
A Hydrafacial is a lovely cleansing and hydrating treatment that exfoliates and refreshes the surface, but it doesn't reach pigment or stimulate collagen the way laser and broadband light do. MOXI and BBL Hero work at a deeper level and produce more significant change to tone and texture. Many people use facials for regular maintenance and reserve MOXI and BBL for the bigger corrective results.
Does it hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. Numbing cream takes the edge off MOXI, and the cooling on the BBL handpiece makes the light pulses comfortable. You'll feel warmth and a mild prickling rather than anything sharp, and it's over quickly.
