MOXI Laser: The Gentle Resurfacing Treatment My Patients Keep Coming Back For

Ask our therapists which treatment wins over sceptics fastest and MOXI is always near the top of the list. It has the word "laser" in it, which makes some people nervous, and then they discover it's one of the calmest, most comfortable resurfacing treatments we offer. As I often tell people, MOXI really isn't just another laser.

The appeal is simple. It brightens dull, tired skin, smooths out texture and the look of enlarged pores, and it works quietly in the background to slow down the visible signs of ageing. All of that happens without the long recovery people tend to associate with resurfacing lasers. You can have it done, go about your day, and look refreshed within a week or so rather than hiding indoors for a fortnight.

In this guide I'll explain what MOXI actually does to the skin, why it suits almost everyone, what a session feels like, and how it fits alongside the other treatments we offer at Wellface in Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon. If you've been curious about laser but put off by the idea of downtime, this is the one worth understanding properly.

What MOXI actually is

MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser made by Sciton. That description is a bit of a mouthful, so let's break it down, because each part matters.

Non-ablative means the laser doesn't remove the surface layer of your skin. Older, more aggressive resurfacing lasers essentially stripped away the top of the skin to force dramatic renewal, which is why they came with raw, weepy recovery and a week or more off work. MOXI works differently. It passes its energy through the surface and delivers controlled heat underneath, leaving the outer layer largely intact. That's the single biggest reason the downtime is so manageable.

Fractional means the laser treats the skin in tiny columns rather than blasting the whole surface at once. Picture aerating a lawn. The laser creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones while leaving healthy, untouched skin in between. Those untouched areas act as a reservoir, so your skin heals quickly and the renewal process is spread across the treated area rather than overwhelming it.

MOXI uses a 1927nm wavelength. In plain terms, that particular wavelength is very good at targeting the diffuse, blotchy pigment and dullness that builds up in the upper layers of the skin over years of sun exposure and daily life. It's the wavelength that tends to give that clear, lit-from-within look people describe after treatment.

Put all of that together and you have a laser that resurfaces gently. It stimulates the skin to renew itself and make fresh collagen, but it does so with a fraction of the recovery you'd expect from stronger devices.

The three reasons patients love it

In the reel, our team summed up the appeal in three points. Those three happen to be the reasons MOXI has such a loyal following, so they're worth expanding on.

Preventative ageing, or "prejuvenation"

Prejuvenation is the idea of looking after your skin before the deeper lines, laxity and sun damage set in, rather than waiting to correct them later. It's a shift in thinking that has become hugely popular, and MOXI sits right at the heart of it.

Every MOXI treatment prompts the skin to produce new collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for firmness and bounce. From our late twenties onwards, we gradually lose both, which is what eventually leads to crepey texture, fine lines and a loss of the plumpness that reads as youthful. By nudging the skin to keep making fresh collagen, MOXI helps slow that decline. You're essentially topping up your skin's reserves on a regular basis instead of scrambling to repair the damage years down the line.

This is why I so often recommend MOXI to patients in their late twenties, thirties and forties who don't have dramatic concerns yet but want to stay ahead. It's maintenance for your skin in the same way a good exercise routine is maintenance for the rest of you. Consistency is what makes it work.

Texture, pores and fine lines

The second reason is texture, and this is where the results tend to surprise people most. If your skin feels rough to the touch, looks uneven, or if your pores seem more obvious than they used to, MOXI addresses all of that in one treatment.

Those microscopic treatment columns trigger a wave of cell turnover. As the skin heals, it replaces tired, uneven surface cells with fresh ones and lays down new collagen underneath. The practical result is skin that feels smoother, looks more refined and reflects light more evenly. Enlarged pores look less noticeable because the skin around them is firmer and better supported. Fine lines soften as the underlying structure improves.

It won't erase deep acne scarring or very pronounced wrinkles in a single pass, and I'd never pretend otherwise. For concerns like those I might suggest a stronger device or a combination approach. But for everyday textural complaints, the dullness and roughness and slightly crepey quality that creep in over time, MOXI is a brilliant fit.

The glow

The third reason is the one everyone talks about afterwards. MOXI is famous for its glow. That 1927nm wavelength clears away the diffuse pigment and sun-related dullness that sits in the upper skin and mutes your natural radiance. Once that layer renews, the skin underneath looks brighter, clearer and genuinely luminous.

It's the kind of result that makes people ask whether you've been on holiday. There's no heavy makeup involved and nothing artificial about it. Just skin that looks healthier and more awake. For an event, a wedding or simply wanting to feel good in your own skin again, it delivers exactly the kind of finish my patients are after. I'd generally time it a week or two before any big occasion so the glow is at its peak.

What a MOXI session is actually like

One of the nicest things about MOXI is how undramatic the appointment is. The treatment itself is quick, often around 15 minutes of actual lasering once you're prepped, so it genuinely can be done in a lunch break.

I start by cleansing the skin thoroughly. A numbing cream usually goes on beforehand and is left for a short while to take effect, which keeps the whole thing comfortable. Most people describe the sensation during treatment as a warm, prickly feeling. It's very tolerable, and the handpiece has cooling to take the edge off. There's none of the drama people brace themselves for.

Afterwards your skin will feel warm, a bit like mild sunburn, and look flushed. That pinkness is completely normal and usually settles within a day or so. Over the next couple of days you may notice your skin feels slightly rough or sandpapery, and sometimes develops what we call MENDs, which are tiny bronze or coffee-coloured specks across the treated area. Those are simply the microscopic treatment zones working their way out as the skin renews. They flake away naturally within three to five days, leaving fresher skin behind. It's best not to pick at them.

Because MOXI is gentle and safe across a wide range of skin tones, it's one of the few resurfacing lasers suitable for people who'd be ruled out of more aggressive treatments. I'll always confirm suitability at your consultation, but the safety profile is one of the reasons it has become such a workhorse in the clinic.

Aftercare and getting the best results

Recovery is straightforward, but a few simple habits make a real difference to how your results turn out.

For the first few days, keep things gentle. Use a bland, hydrating moisturiser, avoid active ingredients like retinoids and strong acids until your skin has settled, and resist the urge to exfoliate or scrub while the MENDs are shedding. Let them come away on their own. Hot workouts, saunas and anything that overheats the skin are best avoided for a day or two while the warmth dies down.

Sun protection is the non-negotiable part. Your freshly renewed skin is more vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure is exactly what caused much of the dullness and pigment you've just treated. A high-factor SPF every single day protects your investment and keeps new pigment from forming. I can recommend a medical-grade sunscreen that feels good to wear daily.

As for how many treatments you'll need, it depends on your goals. If you're using MOXI purely as a prejuvenation and glow treatment, two or three sessions a year often keeps the skin looking its best. For more established sun damage or uneven tone, a short course of three or four sessions spaced a few weeks apart tends to give the most noticeable improvement, followed by maintenance once or twice a year. You'll see some brightness within the first week, but the deeper collagen-building results build gradually over the weeks that follow, which is why consistency pays off.

How MOXI fits with other treatments

MOXI rarely works in isolation in a clinic like ours, and that's a good thing. It pairs beautifully with other treatments because it targets a specific job, surface renewal and glow, and leaves room for other treatments to do theirs.

A very popular combination is MOXI with BBL Hero, a broadband light treatment that tackles redness and more defined pigment and sun damage. Done together, one addresses tone and the other addresses texture and radiance, and the results complement each other. MOXI also sits comfortably alongside injectables. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers address movement and volume, while MOXI looks after skin quality, so many patients build a plan that includes both.

If your main concern is deeper laxity or more significant textural change, I might talk to you about Morpheus8 or a stronger resurfacing option like the Secret Pro CO2 laser, and I'll always be honest about which tool suits your skin best. The point of a consultation is to match the treatment to the result you actually want, not to sell you the most dramatic option in the room.

Common questions about MOXI

Is MOXI painful?

Most people find it very manageable. With numbing cream applied beforehand and the handpiece's built-in cooling, the sensation is usually described as warm and prickly rather than painful. Any discomfort fades quickly once the treatment is over, leaving a warm, flushed feeling similar to mild sunburn.

How long does the downtime last?

For most people, the redness settles within 24 hours. You may have a slightly rough, sandy texture and those tiny bronze specks for three to five days as the skin renews, but these are easy to conceal with mineral makeup after the first day. It's one of the few resurfacing lasers you can realistically fit around work and social plans.

When will I see results?

You'll often notice brightness and a smoother surface within the first week once the initial flaking has passed. The deeper benefits, the new collagen and the improvement in fine lines and firmness, develop over the following weeks and continue building if you keep up with regular sessions.

Is MOXI suitable for my skin tone?

MOXI was designed to be gentle and is suitable across a wide range of skin tones, which sets it apart from some more aggressive lasers. I'll still assess your skin individually at consultation to confirm it's the right choice and to tailor the settings to you.

How often should I have it?

As a glow and prejuvenation treatment, two to three sessions a year suits most people. For more established sun damage or uneven tone, a course of three or four sessions a few weeks apart works well, followed by occasional top-ups to maintain the result.
