MOXI for Pigmentation, Sun Damage and Redness: The Gentle Laser That Fits Around Real Life

WF The Wellface Team Published 20 August 2026 · 11 min read

Some treatments quietly do a lot of work without asking much of you in return. MOXI is one of them, and it is a treatment our team keeps coming back to when patients ask how to brighten dull, uneven skin without disappearing from view for a fortnight. Sun damage, patchy pigmentation, a permanent flush of redness across the cheeks: these are the concerns that show up again and again in consultations, and MOXI was built almost exactly for them.

The appeal is simple. It works across a wide range of skin types, it can treat far more than the face, and the recovery is gentle enough that most people carry on with their week. That combination is rare in laser resurfacing, where results have traditionally come at the cost of days spent hiding indoors. MOXI shifts that balance.

In this article we will walk through what MOXI actually does under the surface, why it suits pigmentation and redness in particular, what a session and the days afterwards look like, and how to decide whether it is the right choice for your skin. If you have been curious about laser but nervous about downtime, this is a good place to start.

What MOXI actually is

MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser made by Sciton, and the technical detail matters here because it explains why the treatment behaves the way it does. It delivers energy at a wavelength of 1927nm, which is strongly absorbed by water. Since your skin is full of water, that energy is drawn precisely to where it is needed, heating tiny columns of tissue beneath the surface without stripping the surface away.

That word "fractional" is doing a lot of work. Rather than treating the whole area in one continuous sweep, MOXI creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones and leaves the skin in between them untouched. Those untouched areas act as a reservoir of healthy tissue that speeds up healing. Your body responds to the controlled heat by clearing out old, damaged cells and laying down fresh collagen, so you get renewal without the raw, open-wound recovery that older ablative lasers were known for.

The difference between ablative and non-ablative is the single most useful thing to understand. Ablative lasers vaporise the top layer of skin, which gives dramatic results but leaves you red, weeping and housebound for a week or two. MOXI heats beneath the surface instead of removing it. You still get meaningful resurfacing, but the trade-off in downtime is far kinder. It is often described as "prejuvenation" for younger patients and gentle correction for older skin, and both descriptions are fair.

One of the reasons our doctors are so keen on it is versatility. MOXI can be adjusted in strength. A lighter pass gives a subtle refresh with barely any visible aftermath, while a stronger corrective setting does more in a single session but comes with a touch more recovery. The doctor chooses the level based on your concern, your skin type and how much downtime you can realistically accommodate that week.

Why it works so well on pigmentation and sun damage

Pigmentation is one of the most common reasons people come in feeling frustrated with their skin. Years of sunshine, hormonal changes, old spots that never quite faded: it all adds up to a complexion that looks tired and blotchy rather than clear. Topical creams help to a point, but they can only do so much when the pigment sits stubbornly in the skin.

MOXI addresses this directly. The heat it delivers targets the clusters of excess melanin that show up as sunspots, freckling and general unevenness. As the treated skin goes through its healing cycle, that pigment is brought up towards the surface and gradually sheds away. Over the following days you may notice the darker spots looking temporarily more prominent, almost like fine coffee grounds or a light dusting, before they flake off to reveal clearer skin underneath. This is exactly what should happen, and it is a sign the treatment is doing its job.

Sun damage is really the same story told over a longer timeline. Ultraviolet exposure not only creates pigment, it also breaks down collagen and coarsens the texture of the skin. Because MOXI stimulates fresh collagen at the same time as it targets pigment, it tends to improve tone and texture together. Skin looks brighter, pores appear a little tighter, and that weathered, slightly rough quality softens. It is a treatment that works year-round too, which is not always the case with more aggressive pigment-focused lasers.

A word on results over time

MOXI is rarely a one-and-done treatment for significant pigmentation. Many people see a genuine glow after a single session, but a course of treatments spaced a few weeks apart usually produces the most even, lasting result. Think of it as a series of gentle nudges towards clearer skin rather than one dramatic overhaul. Your doctor will map out a realistic plan at consultation based on how much sun damage there is to address.

MOXI for redness and rosacea

Redness is a different challenge, and it deserves its own explanation. Persistent flushing, visible little vessels and the general reactivity of rosacea-prone skin can be some of the most stubborn things to treat, partly because that skin tends to be sensitive and easily provoked. This is where MOXI's gentleness becomes an advantage rather than just a convenience.

By encouraging skin renewal and building collagen without traumatising the surface, MOXI can help calm the look of general redness and improve the overall resilience of reactive skin over time. It is often the case that rosacea responds best to a considered, layered approach rather than one single treatment, and MOXI can form part of that picture. At Wellface our doctors assess rosacea carefully, because the right plan depends on the type and stage of redness you have. For some people MOXI is used alongside other modalities such as BBL Hero, which targets the redness caused by visible vessels particularly well.

The key point is that redness needs a measured hand. A laser that is too aggressive can inflame reactive skin and make matters worse, which is precisely why a doctor-led assessment matters. Being able to dial MOXI up or down means the treatment can be tailored to skin that would not tolerate a heavier approach.

What a session is actually like

The treatment itself is quick. The laser pass typically takes somewhere in the region of eight to ten minutes for a full face, though this varies with the area being treated and the settings chosen. Before that, numbing cream is applied and left to work for a while, so the appointment as a whole is longer than the laser time alone. Plan for the visit to take around an hour once you factor in numbing and a proper chat with your doctor.

Most people describe the sensation as a warm, prickling feeling, sometimes likened to tiny sparks or a hot scratchy warmth moving across the skin. It is very manageable for the vast majority, and the numbing cream takes the edge off considerably. There is a cooling breeze from the handpiece that helps too. Immediately afterwards your skin will feel hot, a bit like mild sunburn, and look flushed and slightly swollen. That warmth settles within a few hours.

An advantage worth mentioning is that MOXI is not limited to the face. It can be used on the neck, the chest, the hands and other areas that show sun damage, which are often the places creams struggle to reach and where pigmentation gives away sun exposure most obviously.

Downtime and aftercare

This is the part people most want to know about, and it is where MOXI genuinely shines. The recovery is real but modest. Expect redness and a feeling of tightness for the first day or two, similar to having caught the sun. Over the next few days the skin develops what are often called MENDs, which is the technical name for the tiny darkened microscopic zones the laser created. On the surface this looks like a fine, sandpapery, bronzed texture.

Around days three to five, and sometimes up to a week to ten days with stronger settings, this texture flakes and sloughs off to reveal fresher skin beneath. The golden rule is to let it happen naturally. Picking or scrubbing at flaking skin can lead to irritation or, in rare cases, marks, so hands off is the best policy.

Day-to-day aftercare is straightforward. Keep the skin clean and well moisturised, be gentle with it, and pause any active ingredients such as retinoids and acids until it has fully settled. The single most important step is sun protection. Because you have just encouraged your skin to shed pigment and renew itself, it is more vulnerable to ultraviolet light, and unprotected sun exposure is the quickest way to undo your results and provoke fresh pigmentation. A high-factor SPF, applied daily and reapplied, is non-negotiable for the weeks that follow. Your doctor may recommend specific medical-grade products from ranges such as ZO Skin Health or iS Clinical to support healing and protect the new skin.

Who MOXI suits, and who it may not

MOXI is a good fit for a broad range of people. It is often chosen by those in their twenties and thirties wanting to stay ahead of ageing and keep their skin clear and even, as well as by anyone with accumulated sun damage, uneven tone, dullness or textural roughness. Because it can be used across many skin types, it opens laser resurfacing up to people who might not have been suitable candidates for older, more aggressive devices.

That said, it is not right for everyone at every moment. Active breakouts, certain skin conditions, recent sun exposure or a tan, pregnancy and some medications can all mean the timing needs to change or a different treatment is more appropriate. This is exactly why a consultation comes first. A doctor will look at your skin properly, ask about your history and your goals, and tell you honestly whether MOXI is the best route or whether something like Profhilo, a course of Hydrafacial, or a combination approach would serve you better.

Common questions about MOXI

How many sessions will I need?

It depends entirely on your skin and what you want to achieve. Some people are happy with the glow from a single treatment, particularly if they are treating dullness rather than significant pigmentation. For established sun damage or more stubborn unevenness, a course of three or so sessions spaced a few weeks apart usually gives the most complete result. Your doctor will set out a realistic plan at your consultation.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. With numbing cream applied beforehand, the sensation is a warm prickling that lasts only during the short treatment. Afterwards the skin feels hot, like mild sunburn, and this eases within a few hours. It is a long way from the discomfort associated with heavier ablative lasers.

When will I see results?

You will likely notice a fresh glow within a week or so, once any flaking has finished and the new skin has revealed itself. Improvements in tone, texture and pigment continue to develop over the following weeks as collagen builds, so the skin keeps looking better for a while after the visible peeling has passed.

Can MOXI be combined with other treatments?

Yes, and it often is. For redness caused by visible vessels, BBL Hero pairs well with MOXI. For hydration and firmness, injectable treatments such as Profhilo or polynucleotides can complement it. Your doctor will advise on sensible sequencing and timing so the treatments support rather than overload your skin.

Is there anything I should avoid before treatment?

Steer clear of sun exposure and tanning in the weeks before your appointment, and let your clinic know about any active skincare ingredients you use so you can pause them at the right time. Your doctor will give you personalised pre-treatment guidance when you book.
