Behind the Scenes at the Obagi Ambassador Event 2024, and a Nomination We're Proud Of

YT Dr Yasmin Tayeb Published 16 September 2024 · 9 min read

Some evenings stay with you. For me, as founder of Wellface, the 2024 Obagi Ambassador event was one of them. Held at the home of the BAFTAs in London, the room was full of the Obagi team, their ambassadors from clinics across the country and a panel of speakers who each understand aesthetics from a slightly different angle. It was part product launch, part masterclass and part celebration.

There were two reasons the night mattered to us. The first was the chance to see, touch and learn about the newest additions to the Obagi Medical range before they reach patients. The second, and the part that genuinely took us by surprise, was Wellface being nominated for Regional Clinic of the Year South. That kind of recognition doesn't happen by accident, and it reflects the standard our whole team works to every single day.

Below, I'll share what caught my eye at the event, why we invest so heavily in medical-grade skincare, and what the new Obagi launches could mean for your routine at home.

Inside the Obagi Ambassador event 2024

Obagi Medical has been a fixture in doctor-led skincare for decades, and its ambassador events tend to draw a serious crowd. This one was no different. The evening opened with a run through of products newly launched in the UK, then moved into a series of talks and a lively question and answer session with experts drawn from research, clinical practice and the wider industry.

What I value most about events like this is the depth. It's easy to read a product leaflet. It's far more useful to hear the people behind the formulations explain why an ingredient was chosen, how the clinical data was gathered and where a product fits alongside in-clinic treatments. That understanding is what we bring back to our consultation rooms in Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon, so the advice you receive is grounded in evidence rather than marketing.

Being surrounded by other clinics that hold themselves to a high standard is also a reminder of why we do things the way we do. Aesthetics moves quickly. New devices, new injectables and new topical technologies appear all the time. Staying close to a brand we trust, and to the science that underpins it, helps us separate genuine progress from passing trends.

The new Obagi launches we were most excited about

Several products were introduced on the night, and a few stood out as ones we knew our patients would ask about. Here is what they are and why they matter.

The next generation Elastiderm cream

Elastiderm is one of Obagi's best known lines, and for good reason. The range is built around a patented ingredient technology that combines two minerals, copper and zinc, with malonate. Together these are designed to support the skin's natural production of elastin, the protein responsible for the bounce and recoil that keeps skin looking firm rather than slack.

Elastin is often overlooked in favour of collagen, yet it does a great deal of the work when it comes to how "springy" skin feels and how well it holds its shape around the eyes, jaw and cheeks. As we age, elastin breaks down and the body becomes less efficient at replacing it, which is one reason skin can start to look crepey or lose definition. The updated Elastiderm cream is formulated to target that process, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines and to support a smoother, firmer looking surface over time.

I often remind my patients that a good firming cream isn't a substitute for treatments like Morpheus8 or Profhilo, but it can be a genuinely useful partner to them. Looking after the skin barrier and supporting elastin at home helps your in-clinic results last, and it keeps the skin in better condition between appointments.

Elastiderm eye cream

The eye area is delicate, thinner and quick to show tiredness, fine lines and loss of firmness. The Elastiderm eye cream uses the same copper, zinc and malonate technology, delivered in a lightweight texture that sits comfortably around the eye without feeling heavy or causing product to migrate. It's designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and crow's feet while supporting the springiness of the skin.

We're often asked whether an eye cream is really necessary or whether a normal moisturiser will do. For most people, a dedicated eye product earns its place because the formulations are calibrated for such thin, mobile skin. If you have concerns about the eye area that go beyond what a cream can address, that's a conversation worth having in clinic, where treatments such as polynucleotides can be discussed for the under eye specifically.

A new brow serum

Fuller, better defined brows have been one of the quieter beauty stories of recent years, and Obagi's new brow serum speaks to exactly that. Enhancing serums of this type are designed to condition the brow hairs and their surrounding skin, helping brows look denser and more groomed over a course of consistent use. For anyone who over-plucked in years gone by, or whose brows have thinned with age, a serum like this offers a gentle, non-invasive way to make the most of what you have.

As with any product in this category, patience is key. Results build gradually, so it's worth applying it as directed and giving it several weeks before you judge the difference.

Obagi Hydrate, now in a lighter formula

Obagi Hydrate has long been a favourite in the clinic. The original is a rich, comforting moisturiser that uses shea and mango butter alongside a slow release hydrating technology to keep skin comfortable for hours. It suits normal to dry skin beautifully, but it can feel a touch heavy for oilier or combination skin types, or for warmer months.

The new Hydrate Light version answers that neatly. It offers the same commitment to long lasting moisture in a lighter texture that sinks in quickly and sits well under make up or SPF. For patients who love the brand but wanted something less occlusive, it's a welcome addition. I was particularly pleased to see it, since it means we can now match the right Hydrate to the right skin rather than compromising.

Why medical-grade skincare matters between treatments

There can be confusion about what "medical-grade" actually means. It doesn't refer to a legal category so much as to the way a product is formulated, tested and sold. Medical-grade ranges tend to use active ingredients at meaningful concentrations, backed by clinical data, and they are usually supplied through practitioners who can guide you on how to use them safely.

That guidance matters more than people expect. A potent retinol or a high strength vitamin C can transform skin, but used incorrectly they can also cause irritation or sensitivity. When we recommend a product at Wellface, it's chosen for your skin, your concerns and where you are in any course of treatment, and we tell you exactly how to introduce it.

Skincare and in-clinic treatments work best as a pair. A skin booster, a laser resurfacing session or a course of microneedling gives you a step change, while the right daily routine protects and extends that investment. Sun protection sits at the heart of all of it. Whatever else you use, a broad spectrum SPF applied every morning does more to preserve your results than almost anything else in the bathroom cabinet.

If you've never had your skin properly assessed, a consultation is the place to start. Rather than guessing which products to buy, you'll leave with a routine that makes sense for your skin type, your budget and the amount of time you're realistically willing to spend each day.

Nominated for Regional Clinic of the Year South

The highlight of the evening, without question, was Wellface being named as a nominee for Regional Clinic of the Year South. Awards like this are judged on far more than a single treatment or a slick social media feed. They look at clinical standards, patient care, results and the overall experience of walking through the door.

For a doctor-led clinic, that's precisely the ground we want to be judged on. Every treatment at Wellface is delivered or overseen by qualified doctors, including me, Dr Yosra Albeyatti, Dr Amina Albeyatti, Dr Bianca Coveva, Dr Olivia McCormack and Dr Hannah Sunley. That depth of medical expertise shapes how we consult, how we plan treatments and how honestly we advise on what will and won't help.

A nomination is a lovely moment of recognition, but the real reward is the trust patients place in us across our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon branches. We take that seriously, and events like the Obagi evening are part of how we keep raising the bar.

Common questions about Obagi and medical-grade skincare

Do I need a consultation before buying Obagi products?

For most of the range, a short conversation is well worth it. Some Obagi products contain strong actives that need to be introduced gradually and paired thoughtfully with the rest of your routine. A consultation makes sure you buy what your skin actually needs rather than what's simply popular, and it reduces the risk of irritation.

How long before I see results from a firming or brow serum?

Skincare works on the skin's own timeline. Firming products that support elastin and collagen, and enhancing serums for the brows, generally need several weeks of consistent use before a visible difference appears, with better results over a few months. Applying as directed and not skipping days makes all the difference.

Which Obagi Hydrate should I choose, the original or the Light?

It comes down to your skin type and the season. The original Hydrate suits normal to dry skin and colder months, when a richer texture feels comforting. Hydrate Light suits combination or oilier skin, warmer weather, or anyone who prefers a fast absorbing moisturiser under make up and SPF. If you're unsure, we can help you decide in clinic.

Can I use Obagi skincare alongside injectables or laser treatments?

In many cases yes, and a good routine often improves your results. That said, timing matters. Certain actives are best paused around treatments such as laser resurfacing or peels, so always follow the aftercare advice your practitioner gives you and mention every product you're using during your consultation.
