Skincare After a Beach Holiday: How to Undo Sun Damage and Restore Glow

YT Dr Yasmin Tayeb Published 10 September 2023 · 9 min read

There's a particular look skin has when you get home from a summer holiday. A bit of colour, yes, but also a dullness that no amount of moisturiser seems to shift. The surface feels rough. Fine lines look more obvious. And a few weeks later, faint brown patches start to surface across the cheeks and forehead that weren't there before. That's the sun writing its diary on your face.

Even the most diligent SPF user picks up some sun exposure over a fortnight by the pool. UVA and UVB rays reach the skin, generate free radicals and nudge the pigment-producing cells into overdrive. The result is uneven tone, dehydration and a tired, flat complexion. The good news is that this is exactly the kind of thing a well-chosen product can help correct, and the transition into autumn is the ideal moment to do it.

In one of our recent reels, the recommendation was clear: after a beach holiday, reach for the Obagi Professional-C Microdermabrasion Polish and Mask. It's a favourite among our team for good reason. Below I explain what the sun actually does to your skin, why vitamin C is the ingredient to lean on, how this particular mask works and how to build the rest of your post-holiday routine around it.

What sunshine really does to your skin

UV radiation comes in two forms that matter for your skin. UVB is the shorter wavelength that burns the surface and drives the tanning response. UVA penetrates more deeply, reaching the layers where collagen and elastin live, and it's the main culprit behind long-term ageing and pigmentation. Both types trigger the release of free radicals, unstable molecules that damage healthy cells and set off a cascade of inflammation.

One of the effects of that inflammation is a ramping up of an enzyme called tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is the switch that tells your melanocytes to produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. A tan is your body's attempt to shield itself, but when melanin production becomes patchy and overactive you're left with the dark spots, freckling and blotchy patches that many people notice weeks after a holiday. This is why pigmentation so often appears once you're already home and back at your desk, rather than while you're still away.

Alongside the pigment problem, sun exposure and sea air are quietly dehydrating. Dead cells build up on the surface faster than usual, light bounces off unevenly and skin loses that fresh, reflective quality. So a genuine post-holiday reset needs to do three things at once: buff away the tired surface layer, flood the skin with antioxidant protection and calm down the pigment machinery before it has time to settle in.

Why vitamin C is the hero ingredient after summer

Vitamin C earns its reputation because it works on several fronts at the same time. As an antioxidant it neutralises the free radicals generated by UV exposure, mopping up the damage before it triggers more inflammation and more pigment. Think of it as clearing up after the sun has been.

It also has a direct effect on pigmentation. Vitamin C helps to inhibit tyrosinase, the very enzyme that's been over-stimulated during your holiday. By dialling that enzyme down, it slows the formation of new dark spots and, over time, helps to fade the uneven tone you already have. That's what people mean when they describe vitamin C as brightening. It isn't a bleach; it's a way of restoring your skin's natural, even luminosity.

There's a bonus, too. Vitamin C is a cofactor in collagen production, so consistent use supports firmness and helps to smooth the look of fine lines that sun exposure tends to accentuate. The catch is that vitamin C only performs when it's formulated properly and delivered at a concentration the skin can actually use. Pure L-ascorbic acid is the most researched and most potent form, but it's also the trickiest to keep stable, which is where a professional-grade product makes the difference.

The Obagi microdermabrasion polish and mask, explained

The Obagi Professional-C Microdermabrasion Polish and Mask is a two-in-one treatment, and that dual action is the clever part. It contains 30 per cent L-ascorbic acid, one of the highest concentrations of pure vitamin C available in a home-care product, combined with ultra-fine exfoliating crystals.

When you first apply it and begin to massage, the crystals act as a physical polish. They gently buff away the dull, dead surface cells that accumulate after weeks in the sun and sand. Then, once you leave it on to sit as a mask, the freshly exfoliated skin is primed to absorb that heavy dose of vitamin C far more effectively than it could through a layer of dead cells. So the polishing step isn't just for smoothness; it's what makes the vitamin C infusion work harder. You clear the runway, then you land the antioxidants.

Most people notice an immediate difference in texture and radiance, which is why our team likes it as a quick pick-me-up before an event as well as a post-summer treatment. Used consistently over the following weeks, it also contributes to that gradual fading of uneven tone.

How to use it at home

Apply the mask after cleansing, to skin that is clean and slightly damp. Warm a small amount, around a teaspoon, in your hands and sweep it across the face in a thin, even layer, keeping well away from the eye area. Massage gently for a short while to let the crystals do their polishing work, then leave it to sit as a mask for ten to fifteen minutes. A mild tingling sensation is normal thanks to the strength of the vitamin C. Rinse off with warm water, then follow with your usual serum, moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen. Two to three times a week is plenty.

Who should be a little cautious

Because it combines physical exfoliation with a potent acid, this mask can be too much for very sensitive, reactive or compromised skin. If you have rosacea, active breakouts, eczema or a damaged skin barrier, or if you're using prescription retinoids or acid treatments, it's worth checking with one of our doctors or skin experts before adding it in. As with all active vitamin C products, daily SPF is non-negotiable while you use it. Brightening your skin and then leaving it unprotected in the sun rather defeats the purpose.

Building your full post-holiday routine

A single hero product does a lot, but it works best as part of a considered routine. The order of the day is repair, protect and maintain.

Start by keeping cleansing gentle so you don't strip skin that's already a little parched. Introduce the vitamin C mask two or three times a week to handle exfoliation and antioxidant delivery. On the days in between, focus on hydration, since replacing the moisture lost to sun and salt water will do as much for your glow as any active ingredient. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid to draw water back into the skin. If pigmentation is a real concern for you, a targeted correcting serum can sit alongside the mask, and a nightly retinoid encourages faster cell turnover so the marks fade more quickly.

And then, every single morning, sunscreen. Broad-spectrum, generously applied, reapplied when you're outdoors. Autumn sun is still perfectly capable of driving pigmentation, and any hard-won progress on evening out your tone can be undone by skipping this step.

When at-home care needs a little help

Products are the foundation, but some pigmentation is stubborn and sits deeper than a mask can reach. This is where in-clinic treatments come into their own. BBL Hero and MOXI are laser and light-based treatments that target sun-induced pigment and refresh the overall tone of the skin. Hydrafacial offers a deeper cleanse and hydration boost with instant results. For more established sun damage and textural change, treatments like Morpheus8 or a course of skin peels can be planned once the height of summer has passed. Autumn and winter, with their lower UV levels, are the traditional season for these more intensive treatments, which is another reason September is such a natural time to reassess your skin.

Common questions about post-holiday skincare

Why does pigmentation appear after my holiday rather than during it?

Melanin production is triggered while you're in the sun, but it takes time for that pigment to travel up through the skin and become visible at the surface. Inflammation from UV exposure also continues to stimulate pigment cells for a while afterwards. That's why spots and patches often show up a couple of weeks after you're home, which is precisely when antioxidant and brightening care is most useful.

Can I use a vitamin C mask on skin that's still a bit sunburnt?

No. Wait until any redness, peeling or tenderness has fully settled before using an exfoliating, high-strength vitamin C product. On freshly burnt or irritated skin it will sting and can make matters worse. Stick to gentle cleansing, plenty of hydration and soothing products until your skin has calmed down.

How soon will I see a difference in my skin tone?

The smoothing and glow from the exfoliation are usually visible straight after the first use. Fading of uneven tone and dark spots is a slower process that depends on consistency, generally several weeks of regular use alongside daily sun protection. Deeper or long-standing pigmentation may need in-clinic treatment to shift properly.

Do I still need this if I wore SPF all holiday?

Yes, and well done for wearing it. SPF dramatically reduces sun damage but it doesn't block it entirely, especially if application was less than perfect over a long day. A vitamin C reset helps to counter the free radicals and pigment that get through, and it addresses the dullness and dehydration that build up regardless of how careful you were.
