Three Things to Do for Your Skin Now the Summer Holidays Are Over

OM Dr Olivia McCormack Published 9 September 2024 · 9 min read

The suitcases are unpacked, the kids are back at school, and the diary suddenly has a little more room in it. For most people that shift from summer to autumn is when skin quietly moves up the priority list again. After weeks of sun, sea, late nights and the occasional lapse in routine, skin tends to show it. A few more fine lines settling in around the eyes. Patches of pigmentation that were not there in June. An SPF bottle that is worryingly close to empty.

I talk about this every September. Once the holidays are over, I think it is the natural moment to reset. Not with a dramatic overhaul, but with three sensible steps that tend to make the biggest difference. Topping up anti-wrinkle treatment now the calendar has settled. Replenishing the sun protection you have used up. And finally addressing any pigmentation that the summer has brought to the surface.

There is also a practical reason autumn works so well for a lot of skin treatments. With the strongest sun behind us and less time spent outdoors, skin is easier to treat and easier to protect while it heals. Below is a closer look at each of my three priorities, why they matter, and what a session with me at Wellface actually involves.

Step one: top up your anti-wrinkle treatment

Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily relaxing the small muscles responsible for expression lines. When you frown, squint or raise your eyebrows repeatedly, the skin folds along those movements, and over time those folds settle into lines that stay put even when your face is at rest. A tiny, carefully placed dose softens the muscle activity so the skin above it can smooth out and, importantly, so those lines are given a chance to stop deepening.

The effect is not instant. Most people start to notice the muscles easing between three and five days after treatment, with the full result usually visible at around two weeks. It then tends to last somewhere in the region of three to four months before movement gradually returns. That timeline is exactly why the end of summer is such a logical point to book. If you had treatment in late spring, you are likely due a top-up now, and getting back into a regular rhythm keeps the results consistent rather than letting everything wear off completely before you return.

Why timing and consistency matter

I often remind my patients that anti-wrinkle treatment is as much about prevention as it is about correction. The longer a dynamic line is repeatedly creased, the more likely it is to become a static line etched into the skin. Keeping to a sensible interval, rather than leaving long gaps, means the muscles stay gently relaxed and the skin is not constantly folding along the same creases. Over the years this is one of the quietest, most effective forms of ageing prevention available.

The treatment itself is quick. A consultation and assessment, a few tiny injections with a very fine needle, and you are usually done within a short appointment. There is little to no downtime, though I do ask you to avoid heavy exercise, saunas and lying flat for a few hours afterwards. Most people head straight back to work or the school pick-up the same day.

What areas can be treated

The classic three areas are the frown lines between the brows, the horizontal lines across the forehead and the crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Beyond that, the same principle can be used for a range of concerns, from a gummy smile to jaw tension and neck bands. At your consultation I will look at how your face moves, not just how it looks at rest, and tailor the plan accordingly. I always keep doses natural, so you keep your expressions and simply look less tired and less lined.

Step two: replenish the SPF you have used all summer

If you have been diligent this summer, your SPF is probably running low, and that is a good thing. Sun protection is the single most powerful anti-ageing product in anyone's routine, and it is not something to shelve now that the beach days are over. Ultraviolet light reaches the skin all year round, even on grey autumn mornings and through office and car windows. UVA in particular, the wavelength most associated with ageing, is present at fairly steady levels throughout the year regardless of the temperature.

The damage that shows up as fine lines, loss of firmness and uneven pigment is largely driven by cumulative sun exposure over decades. Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF every single day is what protects all the other work you put into your skin, whether that is anti-wrinkle treatment, skincare or in-clinic procedures. There is very little point investing in treatments to fade pigmentation if you then let fresh UV undo the results.

Choosing the right formula

Not all sun protection is created equal, and this is where a medical-grade product earns its place. A good daily SPF should be broad spectrum, meaning it covers both UVA and UVB, and ideally at least factor 30, though many people prefer factor 50 for the face. The best ones feel light enough to wear under make-up, sit well on the skin and often include antioxidants that add a further layer of defence against environmental damage. If your current sunscreen was a chore to apply, you were less likely to reach for it, so finding a texture you genuinely like matters more than people think.

At Wellface I can talk you through the medical-grade options we stock and match one to your skin type and daily routine. Replenishing now, rather than waiting until next summer, keeps the habit going through the months when it is easiest to let it slip.

Step three: tackle the pigmentation summer has left behind

Pigmentation is often the concern that sends people back to the clinic in September. Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, is produced in greater quantities in response to sun exposure. That is your tan. The trouble is that it rarely arrives evenly. Sun can trigger patches of darker pigment, worsen existing sun spots and flare up conditions like melasma, leaving skin looking blotchy and less uniform once the holiday glow fades.

Early autumn is the sensible time to address this precisely because sun exposure is winding down. Many pigmentation treatments make the skin more sensitive for a period afterwards, so treating during the darker, cooler months and protecting diligently with SPF gives you the best chance of a smooth, even result without fresh damage undoing your progress. I offer two main routes, and the right one depends on how deep and stubborn the pigment is.

Morpheus8 for texture, tone and remodelling

Morpheus8 combines two well-established technologies: microneedling and radiofrequency energy. Very fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, which switch on the body's natural repair response and stimulate fresh collagen. At the same time, radiofrequency energy is delivered through those needles to gently heat the deeper layers, tightening and remodelling the tissue from within. The combination improves skin texture and firmness while helping to even out tone, which is why it is such a versatile option for skin that is looking tired and uneven after summer.

A session begins with numbing cream so you stay comfortable, followed by the treatment itself, which typically takes around thirty to sixty minutes depending on the area. Afterwards the skin usually looks flushed and feels a little warm, similar to mild sunburn, and this settles over a couple of days. Most people are comfortable returning to normal life quickly, with results building gradually over the following weeks and months as new collagen forms. A short course is often recommended for the best outcome, and I will discuss numbers at your consultation.

Medical-grade skincare for everyday correction

For milder pigmentation, or as the perfect partner to in-clinic treatment, medical-grade skincare does a great deal of the heavy lifting. Ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, targeted brightening agents and, of course, daily SPF work together to fade existing marks, slow new pigment forming and keep the overall tone more even. Because these products are more concentrated and better formulated than most high-street equivalents, they tend to deliver visible change when used consistently. I will assess your skin and put together a routine that is realistic to follow, because the best regime is the one you will actually keep up.

Common questions about your post-summer skin reset

How soon after a summer holiday can I have treatment?

For anti-wrinkle injections, there is no need to wait, and once you are back into your normal routine is a fine time to book. For pigmentation treatments like Morpheus8, I prefer that your skin is no longer actively tanned or sunburnt, so giving it a week or two to settle after intense sun is sensible. Your consultation will confirm the right timing for your skin.

Will anti-wrinkle treatment make me look frozen?

Not when it is done well. My aim is a natural, refreshed result where you keep your expressions and simply look less tired. I tailor doses to your muscle strength and the look you want, and I err on the side of subtlety, reviewing you afterwards if any fine-tuning is needed.

Do I really need SPF in autumn and winter?

Yes. UVA levels, the ageing wavelength, stay relatively constant through the year and penetrate cloud and glass. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is what protects your skin from cumulative damage and preserves the results of any treatments, so it is worth keeping up all year.

Is Morpheus8 painful and how long is the downtime?

Numbing cream is applied first, so most people find it very manageable. Afterwards the skin looks flushed and feels warm for a day or two, sometimes with slight roughness or tiny dots that fade quickly. Many people plan it around a quieter few days and are back to normal activities soon after, with make-up usually fine within a day or so once I give the go-ahead.

Can I combine these treatments?

Often yes, and combining is frequently where the best results come from. Anti-wrinkle treatment, a considered skincare routine, daily SPF and a treatment like Morpheus8 all address different aspects of ageing and pigmentation. I will sequence everything sensibly so each element supports the others.
