Pre-Holiday Skincare: How to Prep Your Skin for the Sun and Come Home Glowing
There is a particular kind of excitement that comes with a summer holiday being booked. New swimwear, a packing list, the promise of long warm days. What often gets forgotten in all of that is the skin you are taking with you, and the sun it is about to meet. A little preparation in the weeks before you fly makes a real difference to how your skin copes with UV exposure, and to how it looks when you get home.
As one of our senior therapists, I put together my short list of pre-holiday essentials, and they are refreshingly simple. Three products that earn their place in a suitcase, and a handful of in-clinic treatments that prime the skin without any downtime to eat into your final days before travel. The aim is not to complicate your routine. It is to make sure the results you have worked on, whether that is clearer, brighter or firmer skin, do not quietly undo themselves the moment you hit the beach.
Below is how I approach it, with a bit more detail on why each step matters and what happens to skin in the sun. If pigmentation and premature ageing are the two things you most want to keep in check this summer, this is where to start.
Why sun exposure asks so much of your skin
Ultraviolet light is the single biggest driver of visible skin ageing. It is responsible for the vast majority of the changes we tend to blame on time alone: fine lines, loss of firmness, uneven tone and those stubborn brown patches that seem to arrive overnight. Dermatologists often put the figure for sun-related ageing at around eighty per cent, which tells you how much of the picture is actually within your control.
Two types of UV reach your skin. UVB is the shorter wavelength that burns the surface and triggers tanning. UVA penetrates more deeply, breaking down collagen and elastin, and it is present all year round, even through cloud and glass. When skin is exposed, specialised cells called melanocytes produce more melanin as a defence mechanism. That is your tan, but it is also the root of pigmentation problems when the response becomes patchy or overactive.
Heat plays a role too, not just light. Warmth on the skin can stimulate melanocytes independently of UV, which is one reason pigmentation can flare on holiday even when you are diligent with sun cream. Understanding all of this makes the case for preparation fairly obvious. You are not trying to avoid enjoying the sun. You are giving your skin the tools to handle it well.
My three pre-holiday non-negotiables
Start with a good vitamin C serum
Vitamin C is the product I reach for first, and for good reason. It is a potent antioxidant, which means it helps neutralise the free radicals that form when skin is exposed to UV and pollution. Left unchecked, those free radicals damage collagen and accelerate ageing. A stable vitamin C serum applied in the morning gives your skin a layer of defence that works alongside your sunscreen rather than instead of it.
There is a brightening benefit as well. Vitamin C helps to interrupt excess melanin production, so over time it can soften existing pigmentation and keep the complexion looking more even. We stock Obagi's professional-strength vitamin C in clinic, which is well formulated and pleasant to use. Apply it to clean, dry skin after cleansing and before your moisturiser and SPF. Give it a few minutes to settle. Used consistently in the weeks before you travel, it helps your skin arrive on holiday in a stronger, more resilient state.
Never skip your daily SPF
If there is one habit worth protecting above all others, it is daily sunscreen. I recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 50, meaning it shields against both UVA and UVB. Broad spectrum is the part people overlook, because it is the UVA protection that guards your collagen and helps prevent pigmentation, not just burning.
The word daily matters too. UVA passes through cloud and window glass, so skin is exposed on grey mornings, in the car and by a sunny window at your desk. Sunscreen is not only for the beach. We carry SPF in clinic in both tinted and untinted formulas, and the tinted versions double as a light base, which many people find makes reapplication through the day far more likely to actually happen. On holiday, reapply every couple of hours and always after swimming or heavy sweating. A single morning application does not last a full day in strong sun, however high the number on the bottle.
Keep pigmentation in check with a suppressor
The third step is the one that protects all the work you have already done. If you have had treatments with us to clear pigmentation, the last thing you want is for new patches to form the moment you catch some sun. A pigment suppressor is designed to do exactly that: to calm the melanocytes and slow the formation of fresh pigment, so your tone stays even.
I recommend the iS Clinical Cleansing Complex as part of this approach. It is a gentle daily cleanser that helps keep the skin clear and receptive while working to hold pigmentation at bay. Cleansing might sound like the least glamorous step, but a well-chosen cleanser sets up everything that follows. Paired with your vitamin C and SPF, it forms a simple morning routine that addresses brightness, protection and pigment control in one go.
Treatments that prep your skin with no downtime
Products do a lot, but a professional treatment in the run-up to a trip gives skin a real head start. The key before travel is choosing something that will not leave you red, peeling or sensitive when you are about to sit on a plane and then in the sun.
SkinTyte for firming with zero downtime
One of my favourite pre-holiday options is SkinTyte, part of the BBL platform. It uses infrared light to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin. That controlled warmth causes existing collagen to contract for an immediate tightening effect, and it prompts the body to lay down new collagen over the following weeks, so results continue to build. It is entirely non-invasive.
What makes it such a good fit before a holiday is that it can be used almost anywhere on the body, not just the face. The abdomen, knees, arms and legs all respond well, so it is popular for firming up areas you will be showing in swimwear. There is no downtime at all, which means you can have it done in the days before you fly and carry on as normal. It is a subtle, gradual result rather than a dramatic one, and it stacks nicely with a good skincare routine.
Facials to prime skin and restore your glow
We offer a broad menu of facials, and several are ideal for holiday prep or post-holiday recovery. The Hydrafacial is a firm favourite: it cleanses, exfoliates and delivers a flood of hydrating serums in one relaxing session, leaving skin plump and radiant with no irritation. It is a lovely thing to have before you travel because it leaves you glowing without any sensitivity.
The Fire and Ice facial is more of a resurfacing treatment, combining an exfoliating first phase with a cooling, calming second phase. It is brightening and smoothing, which makes it a good choice when you want a little more polish before an event or a trip. We also offer a foaming enzyme treatment that gently digests dead surface cells for a softer, brighter finish, and Advanced Fusion, a more targeted facial that can be tailored to your skin's needs. All of them are designed to prep the skin and give it that fresh, healthy look, and they work just as well when you come home and want to bring tired, sun-exposed skin back to life.
Looking after your skin while you are away
Preparation is only half the story. The habits you keep on holiday decide how your skin looks when you return. Reapply your SPF properly and often, and do not rely on last year's half-used bottle, as sunscreen loses effectiveness over time. Seek shade in the hottest part of the day, roughly late morning to mid-afternoon, and let a hat and sunglasses do some of the work.
Hydration matters more than people expect. Heat, salt water, chlorine and air conditioning are all drying, so drink plenty of water and keep applying a hydrating serum or moisturiser morning and night. If you notice your skin feeling tight or looking dull towards the end of a trip, that is usually dehydration rather than damage, and it responds quickly to gentle care. Keep your vitamin C going too, since the antioxidant support is arguably most valuable exactly when UV exposure is at its highest.
Common questions about pre-holiday skincare
How far in advance should I start prepping my skin?
Ideally give yourself a few weeks. Vitamin C and pigment control work best with consistent use over time rather than a single application, and collagen-stimulating treatments like SkinTyte build gradually. Two to four weeks before you travel is a comfortable window. That said, even starting a good SPF and antioxidant routine the week before is far better than nothing.
Can I have a facial right before I fly?
Gentle, hydrating facials such as Hydrafacial are fine close to travel because they do not leave the skin sensitive or peeling. More active resurfacing treatments are best timed with a little more room, so your skin is fully settled before it meets strong sun. If you are unsure, tell me your travel date and I will recommend something suited to the timing.
Will vitamin C make my skin more sensitive to the sun?
No. Vitamin C is not a photosensitiser, and it actually helps defend the skin against UV-related free radical damage. It does not replace sunscreen, but it complements it. Apply your vitamin C in the morning under a broad-spectrum SPF for the best of both.
I have had pigmentation treatments. How do I stop it coming back on holiday?
Diligent sun protection is the single most important factor, since UV and heat are what trigger pigment to return. Combine a broad-spectrum SPF 50 with a pigment suppressor and daily vitamin C, reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and use shade and a hat when the sun is strongest. This routine gives your results the best chance of lasting.
What is the difference between SkinTyte and a facial?
A facial works mainly on the surface and the immediate look and feel of your skin, cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating for a fresh glow. SkinTyte works deeper, using infrared light to firm and tighten by encouraging collagen. They address different goals, and many people combine the two: a facial for glow, SkinTyte for firmness.
