My Pre-Wedding Skin Plan: How to Start Early for a Genuine Bridal Glow

There is a particular kind of glow people notice on a wedding day, and it rarely comes from makeup alone. It comes from skin that has been looked after in the months beforehand: hydrated, even in tone, firm and fresh. I know this from both sides of the treatment couch. I am one of the doctors at Wellface, and I am also planning my own wedding this summer, so my skin prep is very much live.

My message is refreshingly honest. The treatments that give you that photo-ready finish are not the ones you book the week before. Most of them work by nudging your own skin to behave better over time, and that process needs a runway. Collagen does not rebuild overnight. Pigment does not clear in a day or two. If you want your complexion to peak on the morning of the wedding, the planning starts now.

Below is a walk through the treatments I am leaning on myself, why each one earns its place, and roughly how far ahead of the date to think about them. It applies just as much to guests, mothers of the bride and groom, and anyone with a big event circled on the calendar as it does to brides.

Why wedding skin prep has to start early

The reason a good plan begins months out is biology, not marketing. Many of the best skin treatments are what we call biostimulatory, meaning they trigger your body to make more collagen and improve the quality of the skin itself. That response builds gradually over several weeks, and it usually needs more than one session to reach its full effect.

Collagen is the scaffolding that keeps skin firm, smooth and bouncy. From our mid-twenties onwards we make less of it each year, which is where dullness, fine lines and a certain flatness creep in. Treatments that stimulate fresh collagen effectively wind that clock back a little, but the new collagen takes time to lay down and mature. That is why a treatment done twelve weeks before a wedding often looks far better on the day than the same treatment squeezed in at the last minute.

Starting early also gives you room to work with any downtime. Some of the more intensive resurfacing treatments leave the skin pink or flaky for a few days, and you want that settled well before you are in front of a photographer. Building in that buffer removes the stress. I often remind my patients that the calmest brides are the ones who booked their skin plan the same month they booked the venue.

Collagen stimulation: the foundation of the glow

Almost everything on my list works through the same underlying idea, which is stimulating collagen. Get that right and skin looks fresher, firmer and more reflective, the qualities that read as "glowing" in real life and in pictures.

CO2 laser for a genuine filter effect

I recently had CO2 laser resurfacing myself at our Esher clinic, using the Secret Pro system, and I describe the result as that flawless, soft-focus finish people usually only get from a phone filter. Fractional CO2 laser works by creating thousands of tiny controlled channels in the skin. Your body responds by repairing them and producing a wave of new collagen and fresh skin cells in the process.

The payoff is smoother texture, refined pores, more even tone and a real improvement in overall skin quality. It is one of the more powerful resurfacing options we offer, which is exactly why timing matters. There is genuine downtime, typically a few days of redness, warmth and light flaking as the surface renews, followed by continued improvement over the following weeks and months as collagen builds. For a wedding, this is a treatment to have well in advance, not in the final fortnight. Have it early and you get the flawless finish with none of the last-minute panic.

Microneedling for skin quality

Microneedling is the gentler cousin of laser resurfacing, and I rate it for the same reason: collagen stimulation. Very fine needles create micro-injuries in the skin, and the healing response thickens the skin, smooths texture and can soften fine lines, scarring and enlarged pores.

Because the effect is cumulative, microneedling is usually done as a short course rather than a one-off, with sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Downtime is modest, often just some redness for a day or so, but again the results build over time rather than appearing instantly. That is why my advice on it is blunt and practical: it is stunning, but it needs to happen soon. Leave enough space for two or three sessions and the improvement in skin quality is well worth the planning.

BBL for even tone and clearer skin

Collagen takes care of firmness and texture, but tone is a separate job, and this is where BBL earns its spot. BBL Hero is a broadband light treatment that targets the pigment and redness that make skin look uneven and tired. Think of the little sunspots, freckly patches and areas of diffuse redness that accumulate over years of sun exposure.

The light energy is absorbed by pigment and by the small vessels behind redness, breaking them down so the body can clear them. Sunspots often darken briefly and then flake away over the following days, leaving clearer, brighter, more uniform skin. Most people describe the sensation as a quick, warm flick of an elastic band, and it is comfortable enough that there is very little disruption to normal life afterwards.

For a wedding, BBL is brilliant for that rejuvenated, lit-from-within look, because even skin tone reflects light more evenly and photographs beautifully. As with the collagen treatments, a short series in the run-up gives a better result than a single session, and it should always be done when sun exposure can be kept low, which is another reason to plan around the season rather than leave it late.

Skin boosters: hydration that makeup loves

If collagen stimulation is the foundation, skin boosters are the finishing layer that gives skin its dewiness. These are injectable treatments that deliver hydration and quality-improving ingredients into the skin itself rather than adding volume or changing your features. The result is skin that feels plumper and more supple, and crucially, skin that makeup sits on beautifully instead of clinging to dry patches. Two in particular are on my list.

Polynucleotides for subtle skin quality

Polynucleotides are the treatment I have been loving lately, and for good reason. They are made from purified DNA fragments, and once injected they act as a kind of biological repair signal, supporting the skin's own fibroblasts, improving hydration and elasticity, calming inflammation and encouraging healthier tissue over time. The word my patients use most often is "glow", and it is a subtle, natural sort of glow rather than anything dramatic.

They are typically given as a course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with the improvement in skin quality building steadily afterwards. Polynucleotides are especially lovely for thin, tired or crepey skin, and for the delicate area under the eyes where many people want brightness without volume. Because the effect develops gradually, they slot neatly into an early wedding plan.

Volite for long-lasting hydration

The second skin booster I single out is Volite, a pure hyaluronic acid injectable designed specifically to improve skin hydration, smoothness and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your skin already contains, and it holds many times its own weight in water, so delivering it into the skin gives a deep, lasting drink of hydration that a cream simply cannot match.

What makes Volite so appealing for an event is its longevity. A single treatment can improve hydration and skin quality for around six to nine months, which means one well-timed session can carry you comfortably through to the wedding and beyond into the honeymoon. Skin looks smoother, feels softer, and takes makeup far more evenly. I expect it to become very popular, and it is easy to see why: the effort is minimal and the payoff lasts.

Building your own pre-wedding timeline

Every skin is different, and the point of a consultation is to build a plan around yours rather than working from a generic checklist. That said, the logic is consistent. The treatments that need the longest lead time and any downtime, such as CO2 laser and a course of microneedling or BBL, sit earliest in the plan, ideally several months out, so the skin has fully settled and the collagen has matured. Skin boosters like polynucleotides and Volite come next, timed so their peak lands close to the day. Lighter treatments such as a hydrating facial can be used to polish things off in the final week or two.

The common thread is that nothing intensive should be brand new right before the wedding. I would never trial a new treatment on skin in the last fortnight, because you want to know exactly how your skin responds with plenty of time to spare. Booking a consultation early lets me map the whole sequence backwards from your date, so each treatment does its work at the right moment.

Common questions about pre-wedding skin treatments

How far in advance should I start?

As a general rule, six months gives you comfortable room to include collagen-stimulating treatments, a course of skin boosters and any resurfacing, all timed to peak on the day. Three months is still workable for boosters and lighter treatments. If your date is closer than that, there is still plenty we can do, but the plan focuses on quick, low-downtime options rather than intensive resurfacing.

Do these treatments hurt?

Most are very tolerable. Numbing cream is used where needed, injections are done with very fine needles, and treatments like BBL feel like a brief warm snap. Any discomfort is short lived, and I will talk you through what to expect before anything begins.

Is there downtime before the wedding?

It varies by treatment, which is exactly why timing matters. CO2 laser has the most, usually a few days of redness and flaking, while microneedling and BBL are much lighter, often just some redness for a day. Skin boosters may leave small bumps or slight bruising that settle within a few days. Planning ahead means all of this is long gone by the day itself.

Are these only for brides?

Not at all. The same plan works beautifully for grooms, mothers of the bride and groom, wedding guests and anyone with a milestone event coming up. Glowing, well-hydrated, even-toned skin flatters everyone, and the treatments are tailored to each person's skin rather than to a role.

Can I combine several treatments?

Yes, and most good plans do exactly that, because collagen stimulation, pigment correction and hydration address different things. The art is in sequencing them so they complement rather than overload the skin. I will decide the order and spacing during your consultation.

Start your plan with me

Wedding prep is one of the most rewarding things I do, because there is a clear goal and a real deadline to work towards. I am going through it myself right now, which means the advice comes from genuine experience rather than a brochure. If you have a date in mind, whether you are the one getting married or celebrating alongside someone who is, the best next step is a consultation so we can build the timeline around you.

I see patients at Wellface in Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon, and I will assess your skin, listen to what you want for the day, and map out which treatments to have and when. Get in touch to book a consultation with me, and let's give your skin the head start it deserves.
