Preventative Aesthetics in Your 20s: The Three Treatments I Recommend

Most of the conversation in aesthetics is about turning back the clock. Softening deep lines, restoring lost volume, correcting what has already happened. But there is a quieter, smarter conversation happening among people in their twenties, and it sounds a little different. Not "how do I fix this?" but "how do I keep what I already have?"

I see it every week at Wellface. Patients in their twenties who look wonderful, have nothing to correct, and simply want to look after their skin properly so the years ahead are kinder to it. As I often put it, anti-ageing is everywhere in this industry, but what about the people who are not ageing yet? What should they actually be doing?

My answer is refreshingly restrained. Three treatments, all subtle, all focused on maintenance rather than change. The goal is never to alter a young face. It is to support the skin, slow the habits that etch lines over time, and keep the whole system healthy. Prevention rather than correction. Here is how each of the three works, and why your twenties are the right decade to start.

Why prevention beats correction

Skin ageing is not one event. It is a slow accumulation of small changes, and a good deal of it is already underway before anything shows on the surface. Collagen production begins to taper from the mid-twenties. Cell turnover, the process that keeps skin fresh and even, gradually slows. And hyaluronic acid, the sugar molecule that holds water in the skin and keeps it plump and bouncy, starts to decline.

That last point is one I return to often. After the age of 25, we lose roughly one per cent of our natural hyaluronic acid every year. It is not dramatic month to month, but it adds up, and it is one of the reasons skin can start to look a little flatter and less dewy in the years that follow.

The logic of preventative work is simple. It is far easier to maintain healthy skin than to rebuild it once the changes have set in. A dynamic line that only appears when you frown is much easier to manage than a static one that stays put when your face is at rest. Hydrated, resilient skin holds up better than skin that has been left to dry out and thin. Starting early means smaller interventions, more natural results and, very often, less treatment overall down the line.

None of this is about looking older than you are or panicking about wrinkles at 26. It is about giving your skin a good foundation. Think of it the way you might think of looking after your teeth or staying active. Small, consistent habits that pay off slowly.

Skin boosters: hydration from within

The first treatment on my list tackles that yearly loss of hyaluronic acid head on. Skin boosters are injectable treatments that deliver hydrating and skin-conditioning ingredients into the skin itself, rather than sitting on top of it like a serum.

They are quite different from dermal fillers, and this is worth understanding. Filler is placed in specific spots to add volume or reshape a feature. A skin booster is not there to change your shape at all. It spreads through the skin to improve its quality from the inside, boosting hydration, supporting elasticity and encouraging the skin to behave like healthier, younger skin. The result is a natural glow and a bouncy, well-rested look, not a different face.

What a session involves

Depending on the product chosen, a course of skin boosters usually involves a small number of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by top-ups to maintain the effect over the year. The product is delivered through a series of tiny injections across the treatment area, often the cheeks, and the appointment itself is quick. A numbing cream keeps things comfortable.

Afterwards you may notice small bumps or a little redness where the product was placed. These settle within a day or so for most people. It is a low-drama treatment, which is part of why it suits younger patients who want results without upheaval.

The kind of results to expect

Skin boosters work gradually. You are not buying an overnight transformation, you are investing in skin quality that builds over the course of the treatment and holds with maintenance. Patients tend to describe skin that looks more hydrated, feels smoother and has a healthier bounce to it. Because the change is in skin quality rather than shape, it reads as "you look well" rather than "you have had something done." At Wellface my team and I will talk you through which booster suits your skin, since the ingredients and strengths vary between products.

A very little anti-wrinkle: softening, not freezing

The second treatment is anti-wrinkle injections, and here the word to hold onto is minimal. I am clear that this is not about freezing a young face or chasing a blank, expressionless look. It is about using tiny amounts of product, particularly in the frown and forehead area, to gently reduce the intensity of the muscle movements that fold the skin over and over again.

Fine lines start life as dynamic lines. They appear when you frown, squint or raise your brows, and they vanish when your face relaxes. The trouble is that decades of the same repeated movement gradually press those folds into the skin until they stay there even at rest. Those are static lines, and they are far harder to treat once they have formed.

How small doses help

By softening the strongest contractions early, small doses of anti-wrinkle treatment slow the process that turns dynamic lines into permanent ones. You keep your natural expression. You can still frown, smile and look surprised. But the muscle is not pulling as hard, so the skin is not being creased as deeply or as often. Over time, some patients find they need fewer units to maintain the effect, because the habit of over-contracting eases off.

This "prejuvenation" approach, as it is sometimes called, has become one of the most common reasons younger patients seek out treatment. The technique matters enormously, though. Placing tiny amounts precisely, in the right muscles, is what keeps the result looking like nothing more than a well-rested version of you. This is where being treated by an experienced doctor rather than a rushed clinic really counts.

Is it right for everyone in their twenties?

Not necessarily, and a good clinic will tell you so. Age alone is not the deciding factor. The right time depends on your muscle activity, your genetics and whether you are already starting to see faint lines linger after you make an expression. Some people in their twenties genuinely do not need it yet. My view is that a consultation should come first, so the plan fits the face in front of me rather than a trend. If you are noticing early lines that hang around a little longer than they used to, that is often the signal that a very light touch could help.

Regular facials: the foundation everything else sits on

The third treatment is the least glamorous and, in my words, the foundation of good skin. Regular professional facials. I have a nice way of framing it. Just as we exercise to keep the heart healthy, we need to keep working on the skin to keep it strong, and that comes from consistent, proper facials rather than the occasional treat.

A professional facial does several things that home care struggles to match. It deep cleanses and clears the pores properly. It supports cell turnover so skin looks fresh and even. And crucially, a well-designed facial helps keep the skin barrier strong, which is the layer that holds moisture in and keeps irritation out. A healthy barrier is the quiet hero of good skin, and when it is compromised, everything else looks worse.

There is a practical bonus too. Skin that is well cared for at the surface responds better to everything else you do. Boosters and other treatments simply work better on a healthy, well-functioning canvas. At Wellface the menu ranges from Hydrafacial through to results-driven options that can be tailored to your skin, so a facial in your twenties can be as simple or as targeted as your skin needs. The point is regularity. One facial a year does very little. A steady routine, on the other hand, keeps the whole system ticking over.

Common questions about preventative treatments in your 20s

Will these treatments change how I look?

That is precisely what they are designed not to do. Skin boosters improve skin quality without adding volume or altering your shape. A very light anti-wrinkle dose softens muscle movement while keeping your expressions intact. Facials work at the surface. The aim throughout is a healthier, fresher version of your own face, not a new one.

How early is too early?

There is no single perfect age. Skin boosters and facials can suit almost anyone who wants to look after their skin. Anti-wrinkle treatment is more individual and depends on your muscle activity and whether early lines are beginning to linger. The honest answer is that a consultation will tell you far more than a birthday will, and there is no pressure to start anything before it makes sense for you.

How often will I need to come back?

It varies by treatment. Skin boosters usually run as a short initial course followed by maintenance across the year. Light anti-wrinkle treatment is typically topped up every few months, and because the doses are small, it may wear off a little sooner than higher doses would. Facials are best kept regular rather than occasional. I will map out a realistic rhythm with you at your first appointment.

Is any of this uncomfortable or disruptive?

For most people, no. Injectable treatments involve fine needles and numbing cream, with any redness or small bumps usually settling within a day. Facials are relaxing and require no downtime at all. These are treatments people tend to fit around normal life rather than plan around.
