Profhilo for Dry, Dull Skin: How This Skin Booster Brings Back Your Glow

WF The Wellface Team Published 3 November 2023 · 10 min read

There's a particular kind of tiredness that shows up in the skin before it shows up anywhere else. The complexion loses its bounce. Foundation sits in fine lines instead of smoothing over them. That fresh, slightly dewy quality you barely noticed when you had it quietly disappears, and no amount of moisturiser seems to bring it back for long. If that sounds familiar, Profhilo is often the treatment we reach for.

In a recent treatment at Wellface, one of our patients came back for her Profhilo after having it before, which is a common pattern. People rarely try it once. They notice the difference in how their skin feels and looks, and they want to keep it. Before going ahead, we talked through her skincare and a few other options, then agreed that Profhilo was the right choice for her at this stage.

This post walks through what Profhilo actually is, how a session works, what those strategically placed injection points are doing, and why it's such a reliable answer for skin that has gone dry, flat and a little lacklustre. It isn't a filler, and understanding that difference is the key to understanding what it can and can't do.

What Profhilo actually is

Profhilo is a bio-remodelling treatment made from highly purified, stabilised hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your body already produces, and its main job is to hold water. A single gram can bind an enormous amount of moisture, which is why it turns up in so many serums and moisturisers. The problem with topical hyaluronic acid is that it mostly sits on the surface. It can't reach the deeper layers where the real work needs to happen.

Profhilo takes a very different route. It's injected into the skin so the hyaluronic acid is delivered exactly where it's needed. Once it's in, it does two things at once. First, it draws water into the tissue and holds it there, acting like an internal moisturiser rather than one that washes off in the shower. Second, and this is the part people tend to overlook, it stimulates the skin to make more of its own collagen and elastin. Those are the fibres that keep skin firm and springy, and they naturally decline as we get older.

That combination is why we describe Profhilo as a skin quality treatment rather than a line-filler. It's not there to plump out a wrinkle or add contour to a cheekbone. It's there to improve the fabric of the skin itself, so it holds moisture better, reflects light more evenly and feels firmer to the touch.

Why it isn't a filler

This distinction matters, and it comes up in almost every consultation. Dermal filler is a thicker gel designed to sit in one place and create volume or structure, restoring a cheekbone or softening a deep fold. Profhilo is deliberately fluid. After it's injected as a series of small deposits, it spreads out under the skin and disperses across a wide area rather than staying put. It's this spreading action that treats the whole surface of the skin rather than one specific spot.

So if you want more definition in your cheeks or lips, filler is the tool for that. If your skin looks tired, dry and dull no matter what you put on it, Profhilo is far more likely to give you what you're after. The two treatments can also work together, and many of our patients use both for different reasons.

What a Profhilo session at Wellface involves

Profhilo is quick, and there isn't much drama to it, which surprises people who expect something more involved. Here's how a typical appointment runs.

We start by cleansing the skin and applying numbing cream to the points where the injections will go. As our practitioner puts it in the reel, this just takes the edge off. Profhilo is injected superficially into the skin rather than deep down, and most people find the sensation very manageable, but numbing cream makes the experience more comfortable, particularly around the more sensitive spots.

The product is then placed using a recognised mapping technique that targets a set number of precise points on each side of the face. These aren't random. Each point is chosen because the product will flow from it and cover a predictable area, so the whole face gets treated with a small number of injections. The classic points include the upper cheek, the area near the base of the nose, the lower cheek, the jawline and the chin. Our practitioner mentioned that the point up towards the cheekbone and eye area is a personal favourite, and she'll sometimes place a slightly larger dose there because of the lovely lift it gives around the eyes and along the cheekbones. Other points target the jawline, the nasolabial folds that run from nose to mouth, and the marionette area at the corners of the mouth.

The whole thing usually takes around fifteen to twenty minutes. You'll leave with a few small raised bumps where the product has been deposited, and we'll talk about those next, because they're the thing most patients ask about.

Those little bumps, explained

When Profhilo is first injected it forms small blebs under the skin, little raised areas holding the product before it settles and spreads. This is completely normal and expected. In our patient's case, our practitioner pointed out that they looked absolutely fine, with nothing jumping out.

In general, the bumps around the nasolabial and marionette areas tend to tuck away neatly and are hard to spot. The one that shows the most is usually the point near the eyes, simply because it sits on top of bone with very little padding underneath, so it has less room to flatten out. There's nothing wrong when that point is a touch more visible. It's just anatomy. These bumps typically settle within a day or so as the hyaluronic acid disperses through the tissue. If you have an event the same evening you can usually cover them with a little makeup once we've given the go-ahead, though many people simply head home and let them settle.

Who Profhilo suits, and when to start

Profhilo is a good fit for a wide range of people, but it particularly shines for anyone whose main complaint is dryness, dullness or a general loss of freshness rather than a specific line or fold. If your skin feels tight, looks flat in photos or has lost that healthy light-catching quality, this is the sort of concern Profhilo was designed for.

Our practitioner made a point worth repeating in the reel: starting younger has real advantages. Profhilo isn't only a corrective treatment. Used earlier, it helps maintain hydration, skin quality and collagen stimulation over time, keeping the skin fresh and glowing rather than waiting until laxity has set in. That said, it's genuinely useful across the decades, and older skin that has become crepey or lax often responds beautifully because the collagen stimulation addresses exactly what's been lost.

It suits people who want a natural result with no change to their facial shape. Because it doesn't add volume, nobody will look at you and think you've "had something done". They'll just think your skin looks well. It's also a sensible option for those who are needle-cautious or new to injectable treatments, given how few injection points are involved.

There are a few situations where we'd pause or suggest an alternative. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection in the area, or have a known sensitivity to hyaluronic acid, Profhilo may not be right for now. And if your real goal is volume or contour, we'll be honest and steer you towards filler instead. This is exactly why we begin with a proper consultation rather than assuming one treatment fits everyone.

Getting the most from your Profhilo

For the best results, Profhilo is usually done as a short course rather than a single appointment. The standard protocol is two sessions spaced about four weeks apart. The first session kick-starts the hydration and the collagen response, and the second consolidates and builds on it. Some people with more advanced skin ageing benefit from a third session in the initial course.

Results develop gradually. You may notice your skin feeling more hydrated within a week or two, but the firmer, glowier improvement from collagen and elastin stimulation builds over the following weeks. Most people see the full effect around eight weeks after their course is complete. To keep it, we generally recommend a maintenance session roughly every six months, though this varies from person to person.

Aftercare is straightforward. For the first day or so, avoid touching or massaging the treated areas so the product can settle where it's meant to. It's sensible to skip strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and heavy makeup for the first 24 hours, and to keep the skin clean and hydrated. Most people carry on with their day almost immediately, which is part of the appeal.

Profhilo also works well alongside a considered skincare routine and other treatments. In this patient's consultation, we discussed skincare and other options for the future, which is typical. Profhilo lays down a strong foundation of hydration and skin quality, and treatments such as skin boosters, polynucleotides or medical-grade skincare can complement it depending on your goals.

Common questions about Profhilo

Does Profhilo hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. The injections are superficial, and we apply numbing cream beforehand to take the edge off. You'll feel a small scratch and a little pressure at each point, and there may be brief stinging, but the session is short and the discomfort is mild for the majority of patients.

How soon will I see results?

Improved hydration often shows within the first week or two. The firmer, more radiant result that comes from collagen and elastin stimulation builds more gradually, usually reaching its peak around eight weeks after your second session. Profhilo rewards patience rather than delivering an instant change.

How long does Profhilo last?

After a full initial course, results typically last around six months, at which point a maintenance session keeps things topped up. How long it holds varies with age, skin condition and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking, all of which affect your natural collagen.

Can I have Profhilo with other treatments?

Yes, and many people do. Because Profhilo improves overall skin quality without adding volume, it pairs well with anti-wrinkle injections, dermal filler for contour, and other skin treatments. We'll plan the timing and order at your consultation so everything works together rather than competing.

Is Profhilo suitable for the neck and hands?

It is. While the face is the most common area, Profhilo is also used to improve crepey skin on the neck, décolletage and the backs of the hands, all areas that show dryness and laxity early. We'll advise on what's appropriate for you during your assessment.

Book your Profhilo consultation

If your skin has started to look tired and dry no matter what you do, Profhilo is one of the simplest ways to bring back that fresh, hydrated glow, and it does it by improving your skin rather than changing your face. The best first step is a proper consultation, where one of our doctors can look at your skin, listen to what's bothering you and tell you honestly whether Profhilo is the right choice or whether something else would serve you better.
