Profhilo Explained: The Skin Booster Behind That Lit-From-Within Glow

WF The Wellface Team Published 11 October 2023 · 10 min read

Some treatments make a change you can point to. A line softened here, a little more volume there. Profhilo works differently. It changes the quality of the skin itself, so the face looks fresher, more hydrated and quietly lifted without anyone being able to say exactly what you have had done.

In a recent treatment at Wellface, one of our patients came in for what the team happily calls a favourite. Profhilo, timed beautifully ahead of the party season, to bring back glow, plumpness and a subtle lift across the face. If your skin has been looking dull, flat or thirsty lately, this is the treatment worth understanding properly. So here is what Profhilo actually is, how a session runs, and what to expect in the weeks that follow.

What Profhilo actually is

Profhilo is a bioremodelling treatment made from hyaluronic acid, the same water-loving molecule your skin already produces to keep itself hydrated and supple. It is worth being clear about one thing straight away, because it comes up in almost every consultation. Profhilo is not a filler. It does not add volume, sculpt a cheekbone or plump a lip. It sits in a category of its own.

The clever part is in the formulation. Profhilo combines high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid in a single product, held together using a patented heat-based process rather than the chemical cross-linking agents used in traditional fillers. That gives it a much more fluid consistency. Once injected, it spreads through the skin rather than staying in a fixed pocket, acting like an internal moisturiser that draws in and holds water across a wide area.

There is more going on than hydration, though. As the hyaluronic acid slowly releases into the tissue over several days, it signals the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for firmness and bounce. This is why practitioners describe Profhilo as remodelling the skin rather than simply filling it. You are not covering over a concern. You are improving the underlying quality of the skin so it behaves more like it did a few years ago.

The concerns it works on: dullness and dryness

Two of the most common reasons people book Profhilo are dull skin and dehydration, and the two tend to travel together.

Skin looks radiant when it is well hydrated and reflects light evenly. When the natural stores of hyaluronic acid drop, which happens steadily with age and is made worse by sun, central heating, alcohol and lack of sleep, the surface becomes drier and rougher. Light scatters instead of bouncing back, and the result is that flat, tired, slightly grey look that no amount of highlighter quite fixes. You might notice makeup sitting in fine lines, or that your skin feels tight and looks crepey under the eyes.

By flooding the deeper layers with hyaluronic acid, Profhilo tackles the cause rather than the appearance. The skin holds more water, so texture smooths and the complexion brightens from within. As collagen and elastin build over the following weeks, that improvement deepens. Patients often describe the change as looking well rested, as though they have come back from a holiday. Skin feels softer to the touch, fine crepey lines soften, and the overall tone looks more even.

It suits a wide range of people. Those in their thirties who want a preventative, quality-focused treatment tend to love it, as do patients in their fifties, sixties and beyond who are dealing with more advanced laxity and dehydration. It also works beautifully alongside other treatments, adding a layer of skin quality that fillers and anti-wrinkle injections alone cannot provide.

How a Profhilo session works at Wellface

On the day, the treatment is refreshingly straightforward, which is part of its appeal. Here is roughly how it runs.

Numbing and mapping the points

The face is cleansed, and a light numbing cream can be applied to keep things comfortable. Profhilo is delivered using what is known as the BAP technique, short for Bio Aesthetic Points. Rather than dozens of tiny injections dotted all over, the product is placed at five carefully chosen points on each side of the face, ten in total.

As our practitioner explains in the reel, those points are not random. Each one sits in an area where the skin is safe to inject and where the product will spread efficiently. The result is coverage that reaches around the eyes to soften shadowing, across the mid-face and the nasolabial folds that run from nose to mouth, down towards the marionette lines beneath the corners of the mouth, and out to the jawline, where two strategic points help create that subtle lift towards the back of the face.

The injections themselves

Each injection places a small amount of Profhilo just under the skin. Because the product is so fluid, it settles into a little bleb that softens and disperses over the next few hours. The whole appointment is usually done inside half an hour. Most people find it very manageable, describing a quick sting at each point rather than anything they would call painful.

Because only five points are used per side, there is far less trauma to the skin than with treatments that require many injections, which is one reason downtime is so short.

After you leave

You can go straight back to your day. You may see small raised bumps at the injection sites, and these are completely normal and typically flatten within a few hours to a day as the product spreads. Some patients notice mild redness or the odd small bruise, both of which settle quickly. There is no need to hide away, though most practitioners will give you some sensible aftercare guidance to get the best result.

Aftercare and getting the most from your treatment

Profhilo is low maintenance, but a few simple habits in the first day or two help the product settle and reduce the chance of bruising.

Try to avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the treated areas for the rest of the day, as you want the product to disperse naturally rather than being pushed around. Skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can, to keep the injection points clean while they close over. It is best to stay away from strenuous exercise, hot yoga, saunas and steam rooms for around 24 hours, since heat and heavy sweating can aggravate the area. Alcohol is worth avoiding for a day or so too, because it can make bruising more likely.

Beyond that, the everyday basics matter more than any single product. Daily sunscreen protects the new collagen you are building. Good hydration, both drinking water and using a decent moisturiser, supports the results from the outside in. Many patients find Profhilo pairs well with a medical-grade skincare routine, and the team at Wellface can advise on what will complement your treatment.

Results and how many sessions you need

Profhilo works gradually, which is exactly why it looks so natural. You will not walk out transformed. Instead the change builds as the collagen and elastin response gets going, with most people seeing a visible improvement in skin quality at around three to four weeks.

The standard starting protocol is two sessions spaced roughly four weeks apart. The first session kick-starts the hydration and remodelling process, and the second consolidates and amplifies it. This is why, in the reel, our practitioner mentions the patient returning for her second batch once the initial results appear. Both treatments are part of one course, and it is the combination that delivers the full effect.

After that initial course, results typically last in the region of six months, though this varies from person to person depending on age, skin condition and lifestyle. Most people choose to top up with a single maintenance session every six months or so, or repeat the two-session course once a year, to keep skin looking its best. Think of it less as a one-off and more as an ongoing investment in skin quality.

How Profhilo compares to fillers and other skin boosters

Because Profhilo is injectable and made from hyaluronic acid, people often assume it is a type of filler. It helps to understand where it sits.

Traditional dermal fillers are firmer gels designed to stay put and add structure. They restore volume in specific places, defining cheeks, jawlines and lips. Profhilo does not do that. It is deliberately fluid so it spreads, and it treats the skin as a whole rather than one feature. Many patients have both, using fillers to restore volume and Profhilo to improve the canvas that sits over it.

Compared with other skin boosters and polynucleotides, Profhilo stands out for its very high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid and its dual action of intense hydration plus collagen and elastin stimulation, all delivered through just a handful of injection points. Other treatments have their own strengths, and at Wellface the doctors will often recommend a combination tailored to your skin rather than any single product in isolation. If you are not sure which route makes sense for you, that is exactly what a consultation is for.

Common questions about Profhilo

Is Profhilo painful?

Most people find it very tolerable. The injections feel like a brief sting at each of the five points per side, and numbing cream can be used to keep you comfortable. Because there are only ten injections in total, the experience is quick and far gentler than treatments involving lots of small pricks.

How soon will I see results?

Hydration improves within the first week or two, but the fuller effect, including the collagen and elastin remodelling, becomes visible at around three to four weeks. Results continue to develop after your second session, which is why the initial course is two treatments a month apart.

Is there any downtime?

Very little. You may have small bumps at the injection sites for a few hours, along with the occasional bit of redness or a small bruise. Most people return to normal activities the same day, which is part of why Profhilo is so popular before events and the party season.

Can I have Profhilo with other treatments?

Yes, and it often works best that way. It combines well with anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and skin treatments, adding a layer of hydration and quality that other procedures do not target. Your practitioner will plan the timing and order so everything works together.

Who is not suitable for Profhilo?

Profhilo is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have certain active skin infections or specific medical conditions. This is one of the reasons it is always carried out after a proper consultation with a doctor, so your suitability and expectations can be assessed first.

Ready to bring back your glow?

If dull, dry or tired-looking skin has been bothering you, Profhilo is a genuinely lovely place to start, because it improves the skin itself rather than masking the problem. It is quick, gentle and famously natural in its results.
