PRP and Microneedling: The Natural Way to Rebuild Collagen and Refresh Your Skin
Some of the most rewarding treatments we offer at Wellface use nothing more exotic than your own blood. That sounds dramatic, but it is genuinely one of the gentlest routes to firmer, smoother, brighter skin. Platelet-rich plasma, usually shortened to PRP, harnesses the growth factors already circulating in your body and puts them back to work in the places that need them.
Paired with microneedling, PRP becomes a proper skin rejuvenation treatment rather than a quick fix. It works on fine lines, mild laxity, old scarring, patches of pigmentation and rough or open-pored texture, all at once. Because the active ingredient comes from you, there is very little chance of a reaction, and there is no upper limit on how much your skin can benefit over time.
This guide explains what PRP and microneedling actually are, how they work together, what a session feels like, how quickly you can expect to see a difference, and how to plan your treatment so your skin looks its best when you want it to.
What PRP and microneedling actually are
PRP starts with a small blood draw, much like a routine blood test. That sample goes into a centrifuge, which spins it at speed so the components separate by weight. The heavier red cells sink, and what rises is the straw-coloured plasma, rich in platelets and growth factors. Those growth factors are the messengers your body uses to repair tissue, and they are exactly what we want to concentrate and return to the skin.
Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, is the delivery method and a treatment in its own right. A device fitted with very fine needles creates thousands of tiny channels in the surface of the skin. These micro-injuries are far too small to cause lasting damage, but they are enough to trigger your body's natural repair response. Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, wake up and get to work.
Used on its own, microneedling firms and smooths the skin over a series of sessions. When PRP is applied into or across those freshly made channels, the growth factors reach deeper and the two treatments amplify each other. You are prompting the skin to repair itself, then feeding it the raw materials to do the job well.
PRP by injection versus PRP with microneedling
There is more than one way to use platelet-rich plasma. It can be injected directly into the face through very fine needles, placed in multiple points across the areas of concern. This suits people who want targeted collagen stimulation in specific zones, such as under the eyes or along fine lines. It can also be spread across the skin during a microneedling session, so the growth factors are drawn down through the micro-channels as the treatment progresses. Your practitioner at Wellface will suggest the approach that fits your skin and your goals, and often the two techniques are combined in a single appointment.
What PRP and microneedling can improve
The appeal of this combination is how many concerns it addresses through one underlying mechanism, which is collagen renewal. When the skin lays down fresh collagen and elastin, several things improve together.
Fine lines and early wrinkles soften as the skin plumps and thickens from within. Mild skin laxity, the slightly loose or tired quality that creeps in as collagen naturally declines, responds to the firming effect. Scarring, particularly the pitted texture left behind by acne, tends to improve markedly, and the research on microneedling with PRP for acne scars is some of the most encouraging in the field. Uneven pigmentation and sun damage become less obvious as the skin turns over and tone evens out. Rough texture and enlarged-looking pores refine as the surface smooths.
None of this happens overnight, and that is worth understanding from the start. This is a treatment that works with your biology rather than overriding it, so the results build gradually and look entirely natural. Nobody will know you have had anything done. They will simply think your skin looks well.
What happens during a session at Wellface
Every treatment begins with a proper consultation. We look at your skin, talk through your concerns and your medical history, and agree on a plan before anything else happens. If you are suitable and happy to proceed, the appointment itself is straightforward.
We take a small sample of blood, usually from the arm, and place it in the centrifuge to separate out the plasma. While that is spinning, we cleanse the skin thoroughly and apply a numbing cream, which is left on for around twenty to thirty minutes so the treatment stays comfortable. Once the skin is numb and the plasma is ready, we begin.
If you are having PRP by injection, the plasma is delivered through very fine needles into multiple points across the treatment area. If you are having it with microneedling, we work the device methodically across the skin and apply the plasma so it reaches into the channels. Many patients have both. The active part of the session usually takes somewhere between thirty and sixty minutes depending on the area and technique.
Afterwards the skin will look flushed, a little like mild sunburn, and may feel tight or warm. That is a normal sign that the repair response has been triggered. We will talk you through aftercare before you leave and arrange a review so we can see how your skin has responded.
Downtime, aftercare and how to plan around it
Because these are injectable and needle-based treatments, some short-lived reactions are completely normal. Expect redness, a feeling of tightness, and possibly some minor swelling in the hours after your appointment. Small bruises and the odd lump or bump can occur, as they can with any treatment that involves needles. Most of this settles within a day or two, though it varies from person to person.
For the first few days, keep things simple. Avoid harsh actives such as retinoids and strong acids, skip vigorous exercise and heat, like saunas and hot yoga, for a day or so, and be diligent with sun protection while the skin is recovering. Gentle hydration, a bland moisturiser and a good SPF are all your skin really needs in the immediate aftermath.
Here is the practical advice we give everyone. If you have a wedding, a milestone birthday or an important event coming up, leave a comfortable margin. We suggest allowing around two weeks between your treatment and any big occasion, and ideally a review appointment in between, so any redness or bruising has fully settled and your skin is at its glowing best rather than mid-recovery. It is a small piece of planning that makes a real difference to how you feel on the day.
How many sessions, and can you overdo it
PRP and microneedling are not one-and-done treatments. Like skin boosters, they work through a series, and the results typically become visible from around four weeks after a session as the new collagen matures. Most people see the best outcome from a course of three to six sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, with the improvements continuing to build in the months that follow.
After that, it becomes a question of maintenance, and this is where the treatment is genuinely flexible. Some patients like a top-up once a month, others every three months, and some are happy with an annual refresh. The right rhythm depends on your skin, your age and what you are trying to achieve, and it is something to agree with your practitioner rather than follow as a fixed rule.
One reassuring point that comes up often. You cannot really have too much PRP, because the material is drawn from your own blood. There is no synthetic product to accumulate and no foreign substance to react against, which is why the safety profile is so good and why the treatment can be repeated comfortably over the long term.
Common questions about PRP and microneedling
Is PRP the same as the "vampire facial"?
Yes, the term vampire facial is simply a nickname for microneedling combined with PRP, coined because the plasma has a reddish tinge and comes from your own blood. The name makes it sound more dramatic than it is. In practice it is a controlled, medical treatment carried out by a trained clinician, and the science behind it is well established.
Does it hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. We apply a numbing cream before we begin, which takes the edge off both the microneedling and the injections. You may feel a light scratching or prickling sensation, and the skin can feel warm afterwards, but the majority of patients describe it as uncomfortable at worst rather than painful.
Is it suitable for all skin types?
One of the strengths of PRP with microneedling is that it does not rely on heat or harsh chemicals, which makes it a sensible option across a wide range of skin tones and types. That said, suitability always depends on your individual skin and medical history, which is exactly what the consultation is for. Some conditions and medications mean the treatment is not appropriate, and we will always tell you honestly if that is the case.
How is a professional treatment different from an at-home derma roller?
At-home derma rollers use much shorter needles and work only on the very surface of the skin. They can give a mild boost to radiance and help skincare absorb, but they do not reach the depth needed for meaningful collagen remodelling, and used incorrectly they carry a real risk of irritation or infection. Professional microneedling penetrates further under sterile, controlled conditions, and when it is combined with PRP the results are in a different league. Think of a derma roller as light upkeep, not a substitute for a clinical treatment.
When will I see results?
The first signs usually appear from around four weeks, once the fresh collagen begins to mature. Improvements continue to develop over the following few months, and they build further with each session in your course. This is a gradual, natural-looking change rather than an instant transformation, which is precisely why the results tend to be so flattering.
