What Rita's Story Tells Us About Treating Dull, Tired Skin

WF The Wellface Team Published 21 March 2026 · 9 min read

Every so often a patient sums up exactly what good aesthetic care should feel like. Rita did just that in a recent conversation with Dr Yasmin Tayeb. She talked about skin she once found upsetting, and how it now looks glowing and youthful. She described results that still look like her, only a more rested, updated version. And she made a point that we hear again and again from happy patients: she was never sold anything she didn't need.

Her words matter because dull, tired skin is one of the most common concerns we see across our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon clinics. It rarely arrives overnight. It creeps in with the years, with sun exposure, with busy lives and broken sleep, until one day the reflection in the mirror looks a little flat and grey. The good news is that dullness responds beautifully to the right plan, and Rita's experience is a useful window into how we build one.

So rather than simply repeat a lovely testimonial, we thought it worth explaining what actually sits behind that kind of result. Why skin loses its glow in the first place, what a considered treatment plan looks like, and why the advice you receive matters far more than any single product or device.

Why skin loses its glow

Glow is really just light. Healthy, radiant skin reflects light evenly because its surface is smooth, well hydrated and full of plump, well organised cells. When skin looks dull, that light is being scattered instead of reflected, and several things tend to be responsible at once.

The most common culprit is a build-up of dead cells on the surface. Skin naturally sheds and renews itself, but that turnover slows with age, so old cells linger and create a rough, matte layer. Dehydration plays a part too. When the skin barrier is compromised or simply short of water, it looks tired and feels tight, and fine lines become more obvious.

Underneath the surface, deeper changes are happening. From our mid-twenties onwards we gradually lose collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its bounce and structure. Hyaluronic acid, the molecule that holds water in the skin, declines as well. Add years of ultraviolet exposure, which breaks down collagen and triggers uneven pigment, plus the effects of pollution, stress and hormonal shifts, and you have a recipe for that flat, lacklustre look.

The important thing to understand is that dullness is usually a combination of problems, not one single fault. That is precisely why a scattergun approach so often disappoints, and why the assessment stage is where everything is won or lost.

The part Rita valued most: honest advice

Ask Rita what she rated about her time with us and she doesn't start with a device or an ingredient. She starts with trust. She described a place that won't just sell you anything because you ask for it, somewhere that tells you what suits you and, just as importantly, what doesn't.

That is not a marketing line for us. It is genuinely how Dr Yasmin Tayeb and the wider team work. A good consultation begins with listening, then looking closely at the skin, sometimes under magnification, to understand its texture, hydration, pigment and underlying laxity. Only then does a plan take shape.

Why saying no is part of the job

A doctor-led clinic has a responsibility that goes beyond giving people what they walk in asking for. Sometimes the treatment a patient has read about is not the one their skin actually needs. Sometimes the right answer is to start with skincare and a peel rather than jumping straight to something more involved. Occasionally the honest advice is to do less, not more.

Turning down a request you could easily have accepted is not the natural instinct of a business, which is exactly why it builds the kind of loyalty Rita describes. When patients know your only agenda is their skin, they relax. They stop worrying about being upsold and start trusting the process, and that trust is what allows a proper long-term plan to work.

Results that still look like you

Rita's other line is worth dwelling on. She said her skin still looks like her, just a better, younger version, which was exactly what she wanted. This is the quiet philosophy behind everything we do. The aim is never to change someone into a different face. It is to refresh what is already there, to take away the tiredness and bring back the light, so friends notice you look well without being able to say quite why.

The treatments that restore radiance

There is no single glow treatment, because glow has several causes. Instead we tend to combine approaches that work at different depths, and we sequence them over weeks and months so the skin improves steadily rather than all at once. Here is how the main options fit together.

Resurfacing and refining the surface

When the top layer is congested and rough, treatments that renew the surface make an immediate difference. A Hydrafacial cleanses, gently exfoliates and floods the skin with hydration in one session, which is why so many people book one before an event. Skin peels take resurfacing a step further, dissolving the bonds that hold dead cells in place to reveal fresher skin beneath. Microneedling creates thousands of tiny controlled channels that prompt the skin to lay down new collagen while improving the way products absorb.

For more significant textural change, energy-based devices come into play. MOXI and BBL Hero, part of a broader skin rejuvenation approach, address dullness, pigment and uneven tone with light, while fractional lasers such as CO2 and Secret Pro remodel deeper layers to tackle roughness, scarring and laxity. These are stronger treatments with a little more downtime, so they are matched carefully to the right skin and the right goals.

Hydrating and rebuilding from within

Much of what we perceive as glow comes from beneath the surface, and this is where injectable skin treatments earn their reputation. Profhilo is a stabilised form of hyaluronic acid that spreads through the skin to deliver deep hydration while stimulating collagen and elastin. It is a favourite for exactly the flat, tired look Rita described, because it improves quality and firmness rather than adding volume.

Polynucleotides are another mainstay. Derived from purified DNA fragments, they work as bio-stimulators, calming inflammation, improving hydration and encouraging the skin to repair itself over a course of sessions. Skin boosters, delivered as fine injections of hyaluronic acid, top up moisture across areas that tend to look dry and crepey. Aquagold, a device with tiny gold-plated needles, allows us to deliver a bespoke blend of ingredients into the superficial skin for an all-over glow, often chosen ahead of a special occasion.

Supporting it all with the right skincare

None of the above works to its full potential without good daily care, which is why medical-grade skincare is part of almost every plan. Ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, well-formulated exfoliating acids and daily sun protection do the everyday work of keeping the barrier healthy and slowing the changes that cause dullness in the first place. Think of in-clinic treatments as the reset and skincare as the maintenance. You really do need both.

Building a plan the Wellface way

What made Rita's outcome so satisfying was not one treatment. It was a plan, layered and paced sensibly, with recommendations she described as on point. That is the model we follow for most people concerned about dullness.

We usually begin by getting the basics right, addressing hydration and barrier health with skincare and perhaps a course of resurfacing. From there we might introduce a bio-stimulating treatment like Profhilo or polynucleotides to improve skin quality from within, then add targeted work for anything specific such as pigment or texture. Between sessions we assess how the skin is responding and adjust, because skin is living tissue and no two people react in exactly the same way.

Rita also singled out the care she received from Dr Yasmin and Simone, and that human side matters more than people expect. Feeling looked after, having your questions answered without rush, and knowing someone is watching the bigger picture over months rather than selling a one-off, is a large part of why patients end up as happy as she is.

Common questions about treating dull skin

How quickly will I see a glow?

It depends on the treatment. Something like a Hydrafacial or Aquagold gives an immediate freshness that is ideal before an event, while bio-stimulating treatments such as Profhilo and polynucleotides build gradually, with the best results appearing over several weeks as new collagen forms. Most plans combine a quick lift with slower, longer-lasting improvement so you enjoy both.

Is there much downtime?

For gentler treatments, very little. Many people have a facial or a skin booster and carry on with their day, perhaps with a little redness that settles within hours. Peels, microneedling and laser treatments involve more, ranging from mild flaking to a few days of redness depending on the strength. We always talk you through what to expect so you can plan around work and social commitments.

Will my results look natural?

Yes, and that is the whole point. The treatments we use for dullness improve the quality of your own skin rather than changing your features. As Rita put it, you should still look like you, only fresher and more rested. Anyone who tells you glow requires a dramatic transformation has misunderstood the goal.

How long do the results last?

This varies by treatment and by person. Profhilo and polynucleotide courses typically last several months before a top-up is helpful, while resurfacing treatments are best maintained on a regular schedule. Consistent skincare and good sun protection make a real difference to how long everything holds, which is why we treat maintenance as part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Am I too old or too young for this?

Dullness affects skin at every stage of life, from stressed and dehydrated skin in your twenties and thirties to the collagen loss of later decades. The right treatment simply differs. This is exactly what a proper consultation is for, and it is why we never apply a one-size-fits-all package.

Come and see what your skin could do

Rita's story is a happy one, but it is not unusual. It happens when honest advice meets carefully chosen treatments and a bit of patience. If your own skin has started to look flat, tired or greyer than it used to, that feeling is worth taking seriously, and it is very treatable.

The first step is a proper conversation. Dr Yasmin Tayeb and the team will look closely at your skin, listen to what is bothering you, and suggest only what genuinely suits you, in the same spirit Rita valued so much.
