Secret Pro Aftercare: How Often You Really Need Maintenance CO2 Laser
Most people arrive for CO2 laser resurfacing with one question at the front of their mind: how long will the results last, and how often will I have to come back? It's a fair thing to ask. Any treatment worth doing is worth understanding, and a course of skin resurfacing is a commitment of both time and recovery.
The honest answer, as one of our doctors explained in a recent reel, is that it depends on you. There's an initial course to build the foundation, then a maintenance rhythm that gets tailored to how your skin responds and how quickly it ages. For some people that means a light top-up every four months. For others, once or twice a year is plenty.
Secret Pro is the device we use for this at Wellface, and it's one of the more sophisticated pieces of kit in aesthetic skin resurfacing. Below we've set out how it works, what a typical course looks like, and, most importantly, how maintenance actually plays out once you've done the initial three sessions.
What Secret Pro actually does
Secret Pro is a Cutera device that combines two technologies in one platform. The first is fractional CO2 laser, which resurfaces the outer layers of the skin. The second is radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, which drives energy deep into the dermis to remodel it from within. Running both on the same machine means we can treat the surface and the deeper structural layers in a way that a single technology can't quite match.
The CO2 laser works by creating tiny, controlled columns of thermal injury across the skin's surface. That sounds alarming, but it's the whole point. Between those columns, untouched skin acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that speeds up healing. As the treated areas repair, the body lays down fresh collagen and sheds sun-damaged, uneven, crepey texture. This is where the improvement in tone, fine lines and general polish comes from.
The RF microneedling side uses very fine needles to deliver radiofrequency energy at precise depths below the surface. Heat in the deeper dermis triggers what we call neocollagenesis, the formation of new collagen and elastin. Because the energy is delivered from within rather than across the top, you get tightening and firming without having to break down as much of the surface. It's the part of the treatment that addresses laxity and structure rather than texture alone.
Used together, these two approaches let us treat every layer of the skin in one appointment. The device offers different intensity settings, so a session can be dialled up for a more dramatic correction with a bit more downtime, or kept lighter for a gentle refresh. That flexibility is why the same machine suits both a first-timer wanting a subtle improvement and someone chasing a fuller resurfacing result.
Why the initial course is three sessions
When a doctor in the reel said "even for myself, I'm doing three sessions," she wasn't exaggerating for effect. Three treatments spaced roughly four weeks apart is the standard starting course, and there's a good reason for it.
Collagen doesn't rebuild overnight. Each session stimulates a wave of new collagen production, but the skin can only respond to so much at a time. By stacking three sessions across a couple of months, you're prompting successive rounds of remodelling that build on each other. The result is deeper, more even and considerably longer-lasting than anything a single treatment could deliver.
Think of it as banking collagen. The first session lays groundwork, the second builds on it, and the third consolidates the gains. By the end of the course you've made a real, structural change to the skin rather than a temporary glow that fades in a fortnight. This is why we're upfront that a proper course, not a one-off, is what delivers the "foundation of youth" people come to us for.
Full results from a course take time to mature. You'll notice improvement in texture and brightness within the first few weeks, but the collagen remodelling continues quietly for three to six months afterwards. The skin you see six months after your third session is usually the best version of the result.
So how often is maintenance, really?
Here's the part everyone wants pinned down. Once you've completed the initial three sessions, you've done the heavy lifting for that year. The trouble is that ageing doesn't stop. As the doctor put it, we all age the year after, and collagen depletion carries on regardless of how good your results look today. Maintenance exists to stay ahead of that decline rather than to repair a treatment that has worn off.
What maintenance looks like is genuinely bespoke, and it comes down to how well you responded and how your skin behaves over the following months. There's no single correct interval. In practice it tends to fall into one of a few patterns.
Some patients come in seasonally, roughly once every four months, for a single top-up session. It keeps the collagen stimulation ticking over and means the skin never has a chance to slide backwards. Others prefer to block out another short course once a year, treating it like an annual reset. And for those who had a particularly strong response to the initial three sessions, once every six months is often enough, because they've already banked so much collagen that the skin holds its improvement for longer.
The reel summed it up neatly. If you've had massive improvement, maybe once every six months is enough for you. If you'd rather see your doctor seasonally and keep things topped up gently, four-monthly single sessions work well. The plan gets built around your results, not around a rigid rulebook.
How your doctor decides your schedule
At each maintenance appointment we look at how the skin has held up since the last one. If your texture, firmness and tone are still sitting where we want them, we can space the sessions further apart. If there's been more visible change, whether from ageing, sun exposure or lifestyle, we bring them a little closer together. It's a conversation as much as an assessment, and it's why we say the schedule becomes more bespoke over time.
The other factor is what you're combining Secret Pro with. Most of our patients aren't doing skin resurfacing in isolation. Good medical-grade skincare, sun protection and sometimes complementary treatments all influence how long your results last, which in turn affects how often you need to come back.
What a session and the recovery involve
A single Secret Pro session takes somewhere in the region of 30 to 45 minutes for the treatment itself, with time on top for numbing cream to take effect beforehand. We apply topical anaesthetic so the appointment is comfortable, and most people describe the sensation as heat with some prickling rather than anything sharp.
Downtime depends entirely on the intensity we use. A lighter, more superficial setting can leave you moderately red and warm for a few hours, much like mild sunburn, with little to no visible interruption to your week. A deeper, more corrective treatment brings more redness and swelling for a day or two, and the skin can feel rough or sandpapery as it sheds and repairs over roughly three to seven days. Because the device is so adjustable, we plan the intensity around your calendar as well as your goals, so we can avoid the busy week or the big event.
Looking after your skin afterwards
Aftercare is straightforward but matters more than people expect. In the first days the skin is healing, so the priorities are keeping it clean, keeping it hydrated and protecting it from the sun. We'll give you specific guidance on the day, but the general principles are worth knowing in advance.
Keep the area moisturised with what we recommend, avoid picking or exfoliating any flaking skin as it comes away, and be diligent with a high-factor SPF once the initial healing allows. Sun exposure on freshly resurfaced skin is the fastest way to undo your results and risk pigmentation, so this isn't optional. Skip heavy make-up, hot workouts, saunas and swimming pools until the skin has settled. Active ingredients like retinoids and acids go back into your routine only once we say the barrier has recovered.
Who Secret Pro suits, and who should wait
Secret Pro is a strong option for anyone dealing with the signs of ageing and sun damage: fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, enlarged pores, crepey skin and mild to moderate laxity. Because the RF microneedling reaches the deeper dermis, it also has a role in improving the appearance of certain scars, including some acne scarring, and in firming skin that has started to lose its bounce.
It isn't right for everyone, and that's exactly what the consultation is for. Active breakouts or infections in the treatment area, certain skin conditions, recent sun exposure or a fresh tan, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and some medications and medical histories can all mean we postpone or choose a different approach. Deeper skin tones can absolutely be treated, but they need careful assessment and settings to keep the risk of pigmentation change low. A doctor-led assessment is the safeguard that makes the treatment both effective and safe for your particular skin.
Common questions about Secret Pro maintenance
Do I have to keep coming back forever?
Not in the sense of the treatment failing if you stop. The improvements you build during your course are real structural changes to the skin. What maintenance does is keep you ahead of ongoing collagen loss, so the skin continues to look its best rather than gradually drifting back towards where it started. How often you return is your choice, guided by your doctor.
Is maintenance less intense than the initial course?
Usually, yes. Once you've banked collagen from the first three sessions, a single top-up is often all that's needed to maintain the result, rather than repeating the full course each time. That said, some patients like to do another short course annually. Both approaches work, and we'll help you decide which fits your skin and your schedule.
When will I see the results from my course?
You'll notice brighter, smoother skin within the first few weeks, but the deeper collagen remodelling continues for three to six months after your final session. The most complete result tends to show around the half-year mark, which is also why maintenance intervals are often measured in months rather than weeks.
Can Secret Pro be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it frequently is. Many patients pair skin resurfacing with injectables, skin boosters or medical-grade skincare to address different concerns at once. We sequence everything carefully so treatments support rather than interfere with each other, which is one of the advantages of being seen in a clinic where several treatments are offered under one roof.
How much downtime should I plan for?
Anything from a few hours of redness after a light session to several days of redness, swelling and flaking after a deeper one. We set the intensity partly around your recovery time, so if you have an event coming up, tell us and we'll plan accordingly.
