SkinPen Microneedling: How Controlled Micro-Injuries Give Skin Its Glow Back

YT Dr Yasmin Tayeb Published 23 September 2021 · 9 min read

Microneedling has a slightly alarming reputation. Tiny needles, the skin, a device that hums as it works. It sounds far more dramatic than it feels, and it also happens to be one of the most versatile treatments I offer for texture, tone and that overall sense of freshness that skin loses over time. The device I use is the SkinPen, a medical-grade microneedling pen designed to do one job extremely well: prompt your skin to repair and rebuild itself.

The idea is simple even if the science behind it is clever. By creating thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin, the SkinPen triggers your body's natural wound-healing response. That response is what floods the treated area with fresh collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth and springy. You are not adding anything foreign. You are asking the skin to do what it did easily in your twenties.

What surprises a lot of people is where it can be used. Microneedling is best known as a facial, but the same principle works beautifully on the body, which is why so many of my patients come in asking about stretch marks and scarring rather than their complexion. Here is how it works, what a session actually involves, and who tends to see the best results.

What microneedling actually does to your skin

Every SkinPen treatment relies on a single biological trick. The device holds a cluster of very fine needles that move up and down at speed, creating microscopic punctures across the surface of the skin. These are far too small to cause real damage, but they are enough to convince the body that a repair is needed.

That repair happens in stages. First there is a brief inflammatory phase, which is why skin looks a little pink straight afterwards. Then comes proliferation, where new tissue and tiny new blood vessels form. Finally there is remodelling, the slow and genuinely valuable part, where collagen and elastin are laid down and reorganised over the following weeks and months. This is why the glow you notice a few days later is only the beginning. The deeper improvement in firmness and texture keeps developing long after the redness has gone.

Because the treatment works with your own healing process rather than against it, it tends to suit people who want a natural result. There is no filler, no toxin and nothing that changes the shape of the face. It simply improves the quality of the skin you already have.

Why the SkinPen device matters

Not all microneedling is equal, and the tool makes a real difference. The SkinPen uses sterile, single-use cartridges that come sealed in the kit, so the needles that touch your skin are always brand new. That matters enormously for safety and hygiene, and it is one of the reasons a medical microneedling treatment is not the same thing as running a home derma roller across your face.

The other advantage is control. The needle depth on the SkinPen is fully adjustable, which means the same device can be dialled right down for delicate areas or turned up for tougher, thicker skin. I can tailor the depth to the exact part of the body being treated, and to what that skin actually needs, rather than applying one blunt setting everywhere.

Adjustable depth, from the eye area to stretch marks

The skin on your body is not uniform, and neither is a good microneedling treatment. This is where the adjustable settings on the SkinPen come into their own.

Around the eyes, where the skin is thin and fragile, a very shallow setting of around 0.5mm is usually all that is needed. Across the cheeks, where skin is a little thicker, I work the depth up from roughly 0.5mm towards a maximum of about 1.5mm. Move onto the body, where skin is thicker still, or onto scar tissue and stretch marks, and the needles can go deeper again, from around 1.5mm up to 2mm and even 2.5mm.

That range is what makes the treatment so adaptable. Thin skin gets a gentle touch, stubborn scarred tissue gets the deeper stimulation it requires, and I judge everything case by case. It is one treatment, but it is never quite the same treatment twice.

The concerns microneedling handles best

People book microneedling for very different reasons, and it is worth being clear about what it is genuinely good at.

For texture and pores, it is one of the most reliable options available. As new collagen forms, the surface of the skin becomes smoother and more even, and enlarged pores tend to look tighter and less obvious. If your complexion feels rough or looks a little congested, this is the treatment that resurfaces without stripping.

For dullness, the improvement is often the first thing my patients notice. Skin that has looked tired and flat starts to reflect light better once it is healthier and better hydrated, which is where that much-talked-about glow comes from. It is not a coincidence that a course of microneedling leaves the skin looking brighter.

For scarring, and particularly acne scarring and stretch marks, microneedling is one of the few non-surgical treatments that can genuinely change the texture of scar tissue. Stretch marks after pregnancy or significant weight loss respond well because the deeper needle settings break up old, disorganised tissue and encourage smoother collagen to form in its place. It is rarely a complete erasure, but the softening and blending can be considerable.

Face, body and everywhere in between

The point worth repeating is that microneedling is not limited to the face. The belly, thighs, upper arms and other areas prone to stretch marks all respond to the same collagen-stimulating process. If an area of skin has lost tone or picked up scarring, it is usually a candidate. This is exactly why so many post-pregnancy and post-weight-loss patients find their way to the treatment.

What a SkinPen session involves

A treatment starts with clean skin and a numbing cream, which I leave on long enough to make the whole thing comfortable. Most people describe the sensation as a light vibration or prickle rather than anything painful, and I handle the more delicate areas gently.

The pass with the SkinPen itself is quick. A facial usually takes around half an hour once the numbing is done, and larger body areas take a little longer. Afterwards I soothe the treated skin with the calming products that come with the kit. The first is a light, thin gel that helps with hydration and any irritation in the first 24 hours. The second is a richer soothing cream for use from 24 hours onwards, once the skin has begun to settle.

You will look flushed straight away, rather as though you have caught the sun. That is entirely normal and part of the process working as it should.

Downtime and aftercare

Most people are comfortable going about their day fairly quickly, but the visible redness typically lasts somewhere between one and three days, occasionally a touch longer on the body or after deeper work. Some patients notice a faint grid-like pattern or mild swelling in the first day or two. This fades on its own.

The aftercare is straightforward and worth following closely. Keep the skin clean and leave makeup off for the first 24 hours while those micro-channels close. Skip active ingredients like retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids for a few days, avoid heavy exercise, saunas and swimming while skin is settling, and be diligent with a high-factor sunscreen. Fresh collagen is precious, and sun protection is how you keep it.

How many treatments you will need

Microneedling is a course, not a one-off. Because it works by building collagen gradually, the results stack with repeated sessions. I usually advise a course of around three treatments spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, with deeper concerns such as scarring and stretch marks sometimes needing more. Once you have completed a course, occasional maintenance sessions help hold onto the improvement over time.

Common questions about SkinPen microneedling

Is microneedling painful?

Not for most people. I apply a numbing cream before the treatment begins, so the sensation is usually a light prickling or vibration rather than pain. The eye area and any bony parts can feel a little more, but I design the whole session to be comfortable, and any tenderness afterwards is mild.

How soon will I see results?

You will notice a fresher, more hydrated look within a few days once the initial redness settles. The more meaningful changes in texture, firmness and scarring build over the following weeks and months as new collagen forms, and they continue to improve across a full course of treatments.

Can microneedling treat stretch marks?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons the treatment is so popular for the body. Using the deeper needle settings, the SkinPen stimulates collagen within stretch mark tissue, which can soften their appearance and blend them into the surrounding skin. Results vary from person to person, and older, well-established marks usually need a course rather than a single session.

Who is not suitable for microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy, or for anyone with an active skin infection, an outbreak of acne or cold sores in the area, or certain skin conditions. If you have a history of keloid scarring or are taking particular medications, mention it at your consultation. I will always assess your skin and history first to make sure the treatment is right for you.

Is home derma rolling the same thing?

No. A professional SkinPen treatment uses a sterile, single-use cartridge, precisely controlled depth and medical oversight, none of which a home roller can offer. Home devices carry a real risk of uneven results, irritation and infection, and they cannot reach the depths that make a genuine difference to scarring or texture.
