Skinvive at Wellface: The Next-Generation Skin Booster for Deep Hydration and Glow
Some of the most striking results in aesthetics have nothing to do with changing your face. No new cheekbones, no plumped lips, no lift. Just skin that looks healthier, holds the light differently and feels genuinely hydrated when you press a finger to your cheek. That is the whole idea behind a skin booster, and it is exactly what I was talking about in my recent reel introducing Skinvive to my patients at Wellface.
Skinvive has been quietly used in clinics for a while, first under the name Juvederm Volite, and it has recently been rebranded and relaunched to a lot of attention. I describe it as the latest skin booster for the ultimate hydration, and it earns that description. It is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid treatment, but it does not behave like a traditional filler. Instead of adding volume or reshaping a feature, it works within the skin to switch on the body's own moisture-holding machinery.
If your skin has been looking dull, feeling tight and dry, or simply refusing to glow no matter how many serums you layer on, this is a treatment worth understanding properly. Below, I walk through how Skinvive actually works, what a session at Wellface involves, who tends to benefit most, and how it fits alongside the other treatments we offer across our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon clinics.
What Skinvive actually is
Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid injectable made by the same family behind the Juvederm range. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a substance your skin produces naturally. It is remarkable at attracting and holding water, capable of binding many times its own weight in moisture, which is why it sits at the heart of so much of modern skincare and aesthetics. As we age, our natural stores of HA decline, and the skin's ability to stay plump and hydrated goes with it. That is a big part of why mature skin can look flat, papery or dull even when you are looking after it well.
Where Skinvive differs from a standard dermal filler comes down to how it is placed and what it is designed to do. A filler is injected deeper and in a more concentrated way to restore lost volume, sharpen a jawline or support a cheek. Skinvive is delivered as tiny microdroplets just below the surface, spread across the treatment area so the product diffuses into an even, thin layer within the skin. It is lightly cross-linked, which means it integrates with the tissue rather than forming a firm pocket. As I put it, it works within the skin, not as a filler.
The practical upshot is subtle. Skinvive will not change the shape of your face or give you the fuller, more sculpted look that filler can. What it changes is skin quality: hydration, smoothness, softness and that hard-to-fake healthy radiance. Many of my patients describe the result as looking like a better-rested, better-hydrated version of themselves rather than looking treated.
How it works beneath the surface
In my reel, I mention something that sounds almost too clever to be true. Skinvive, I explain, actively switches on a protein within the skin so that we hold onto moisture for longer and support the deeper tissues with that hydration. This is not marketing shorthand. It refers to a genuine mechanism involving a protein called aquaporin-3.
Aquaporins are tiny channels that sit in the membranes of skin cells and transport water and glycerol between them. Aquaporin-3, often shortened to AQP3, is the main one found in the skin, and it plays a central role in keeping the epidermis hydrated and functioning well. Levels naturally fall as we age, which contributes to that persistent dryness and dullness so many people notice from their late thirties onwards. Research on this class of hyaluronic acid injectable suggests it can help upregulate AQP3, effectively encouraging the skin to move and retain water more efficiently.
So there are two things happening at once. First, the hyaluronic acid itself acts as a reservoir, drawing in and holding moisture where it is placed. Second, by supporting aquaporin activity, the treatment helps the skin's own cells manage hydration better over time. There is also evidence that this kind of intradermal HA can gently encourage collagen and support the skin's structure, which contributes to smoother texture and a slightly firmer feel. The combined effect is skin that looks fresher, feels more supple and reflects light more evenly.
What a Skinvive session at Wellface involves
Every treatment at Wellface begins with a proper consultation. I, or one of our other doctors, will look at your skin, ask about your concerns and your routine, and confirm whether Skinvive is the right choice or whether something else would serve you better. This matters, because dry, dull skin can have several causes, and a good result depends on matching the treatment to the actual problem.
On the day, the treatment itself is quick and well tolerated. The area, most often the cheeks, is cleansed and a numbing cream is usually applied to keep you comfortable. Skinvive also contains a small amount of lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, built into the formulation, which further eases any discomfort during the injections. The product is then delivered as a series of very small microdroplets using a fine needle, placed in a grid-like pattern across the area so the HA is distributed evenly.
The whole appointment is typically done well within the hour. You may feel small raised bumps where the droplets have been placed, and these are entirely normal. For most people they settle and become invisible within a few hours to a day as the product diffuses and integrates. Some patients have a single session; others benefit from a light touch-up a few weeks later, which I will discuss with you based on how your skin responds.
Downtime and aftercare
Downtime is minimal, which is a large part of the appeal. You might have some mild redness, slight swelling or the odd tiny bump for a short while, and occasionally a little bruising at an injection point. Most people are perfectly presentable the same day and back to normal life quickly.
For the first day or so, it is sensible to keep things simple. Avoid heavy makeup over the treated area, skip vigorous exercise, hot yoga, saunas and steam rooms, and stay out of strong sun. Keep the skin clean and hydrated, and hold off on active skincare ingredients like retinoids and strong acids for a day or two so the skin can settle. I will give you tailored guidance, but Skinvive is deliberately an easy treatment to recover from.
The results and how long they last
Skinvive is not an instant party trick. The real improvement builds over the following days and weeks as the hyaluronic acid settles and the hydration effect takes hold. Most people start to notice their skin looking dewier, smoother and more radiant within a couple of weeks, with the fuller effect visible around the one-month mark.
Duration is one of the reasons this treatment has generated so much interest. In my reel, I note that it can last in the skin for up to nine months, which is genuinely impressive for a hydration booster. The published clinical data supports lasting improvement in skin smoothness for around six months, with many patients and practitioners reporting that the hydration and glow benefits carry on beyond that. Results vary from person to person depending on skin type, age and lifestyle, so I will suggest a maintenance rhythm that keeps your skin looking its best rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.
What you should not expect is a dramatic change to your appearance. That is the point. Skinvive is designed to make skin look like better skin, not to reshape your face. If anything, its restraint is what makes it so versatile.
Who Skinvive suits
Skinvive tends to be a strong choice for anyone whose main complaint is dryness, dullness and a lack of glow. If your skin feels tight and dehydrated, looks flat under photographs, or has lost that plump, healthy bounce it used to have, this is a treatment worth considering. It also helps soften the look of fine lines that are made worse by dehydration, refine the appearance of pores and improve overall texture, all without adding volume.
It suits a wide range of ages. Younger patients often use it to maintain and enhance skin quality and to get that smooth, luminous base that makeup sits beautifully over. Those in their forties, fifties and beyond appreciate the way it addresses the crepey, dry quality that comes as natural HA declines. It is suitable across all skin tones, which is not the case for every skin treatment.
Skinvive is not the right choice for everyone. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection in the area, or have a history of severe allergies, particularly to hyaluronic acid products or lidocaine, it may not be appropriate, and I will talk this through with you. It also will not correct volume loss or lift sagging skin. If those are your concerns, the answer lies in a different treatment, and part of the value of seeing a doctor-led clinic is getting an honest recommendation rather than being sold whatever is new.
How Skinvive fits alongside our other treatments
One of the questions patients often ask me is how Skinvive compares to the other skin quality treatments we offer, such as Profhilo, polynucleotides and traditional skin boosters. There is genuine overlap, and there are meaningful differences.
Profhilo is another injectable hyaluronic acid treatment, but it is designed to spread widely and act as a bio-remodelling treatment, improving hydration and firmness across a larger area, usually over two initial sessions. Polynucleotides work differently again, focusing on repairing and regenerating the skin at a deeper level, which makes them a favourite for tired, crepey or compromised skin. Skinvive sits in this same family of skin quality treatments, with a particular strength in targeted, long-lasting hydration and glow, especially across the cheeks.
The good news is that these treatments are not mutually exclusive. Skin quality is rarely down to a single factor, and many patients get the best outcome from a considered combination delivered over time. Skinvive also pairs well with treatments like Hydrafacial for surface radiance or with resurfacing options when texture is a bigger concern. I will map out a plan that makes sense for your skin rather than layering on treatments for their own sake.
Common questions about Skinvive
Is Skinvive the same as a dermal filler?
No, and this distinction matters. Both are made from hyaluronic acid, but a dermal filler is placed to restore volume and shape a feature, while Skinvive is delivered in microdroplets within the skin to improve hydration, texture and glow. It will not change your facial contours or give you a fuller look. It simply makes your existing skin look and feel healthier.
Does the treatment hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. We usually apply a numbing cream beforehand, and the product contains a small amount of local anaesthetic, so discomfort is kept to a minimum. You may feel the small injections and notice tiny bumps immediately afterwards, but these settle quickly and the appointment is short.
When will I see results and how long do they last?
The glow builds over the days and weeks following treatment, with noticeable results around a month in. Improvement in smoothness generally lasts up to around six months, and many people find the hydration and radiance continue beyond that, which is why I refer to results lasting up to nine months. Maintenance treatments keep the effect topped up.
Can Skinvive be combined with other treatments?
Yes. It works well as part of a broader skin plan and can be combined with treatments like Profhilo, polynucleotides, Hydrafacial and various resurfacing options, depending on your goals. The sensible approach is to space and sequence treatments properly, which I will guide you on during consultation.
Is there any downtime?
Very little. Expect possible mild redness, slight swelling or small bumps that resolve within hours to a day, and occasionally minor bruising. Most people carry on with their day as normal, avoiding heavy makeup, intense exercise and heat for the first day or so.
