The Wellface Effect: How the Right Treatment Brings Glow and Confidence Back After 60

WF The Wellface Team Published 15 May 2026 · 10 min read

Every so often a patient describes their result in a way that stays with you. One of ours, Louise, is in her sixties, and after her treatment she used three words that sum up exactly what good aesthetic medicine should do: wonderful, confident, glowing. She talked about waking up in the mornings and seeing her whole face glow. She talked about barely reaching for makeup, something she had not experienced since her thirties and forties. And she talked about feeling great, with nothing on but a little lipstick.

That reaction is what we quietly call the Wellface effect. It has very little to do with looking dramatically different and everything to do with looking like yourself on a good day, every day. Skin that catches the light. A face that looks rested rather than tired. The small, private confidence of not feeling you have to cover up before you leave the house.

This post is about how that happens. Not the marketing version, but the real one: why mature skin loses its glow, which treatments genuinely restore it, what a session actually involves, and why the emotional side of the result matters just as much as the reflection in the mirror.

Why skin loses its glow with age

Radiance is not really about the surface. When skin looks luminous, what you are seeing is light bouncing off a smooth, well-hydrated, plump surface with good blood flow underneath. As we get older, several of those things change at once.

Collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its structure and bounce, decline steadily from our mid-twenties, and the drop accelerates around the menopause. Skin holds less water because the natural stores of hyaluronic acid reduce. Cell turnover slows, so dull, older cells linger on the surface for longer instead of being replaced. Oil production falls, which is why skin that was once shiny can start to feel tight and papery. Years of sun exposure show up as uneven tone and pigmentation. Put it together and the result is skin that looks flatter, drier and, as Louise put it, a bit dragged in the mornings.

This is also why makeup starts to behave differently. On younger, well-hydrated skin, foundation sits smoothly and light does the work for you. On drier, less even skin, makeup can cling to fine lines and settle into texture, which is precisely when many people feel they suddenly need more of it. Improve the underlying skin quality and the reverse happens. You need less, because the skin itself is doing the glowing.

The treatments behind a natural glow

There is no single injection called "glow". The luminous, rested look tends to come from treatments that work on skin quality from the inside, rather than filling or freezing. At Wellface these are the workhorses of natural rejuvenation, and they are often combined over a course rather than done as one-off fixes.

Bio-remodelling with Profhilo

Profhilo is a stabilised form of hyaluronic acid, injected into a few precise points across the face or neck. Rather than adding volume in one spot, it spreads through the tissue and acts as a hydrating, remodelling boost. It draws water into the skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin over the following weeks. Most people begin to notice a visible glow and softer texture within a couple of weeks, with the firming, bio-remodelling benefit building over two to three months. It is a favourite for exactly the kind of tired, slightly deflated skin that comes with age, and the standard protocol is usually two sessions about four weeks apart, then a top-up every six months or so.

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are a regenerative treatment derived from purified DNA fragments, often from salmon or trout, that are highly compatible with human skin. They work more slowly and more deeply than Profhilo, supporting cellular renewal, calming inflammation and strengthening the skin's structure from within. The improvement is gradual, typically over two to three months, and it tends to be long-lasting. They are particularly useful for thin, crepey, fragile skin and for the delicate area under the eyes. Many patients have them as a course of two or three sessions spaced a few weeks apart.

Skin boosters and Hydrafacial

Skin boosters deliver micro-droplets of hyaluronic acid and sometimes vitamins across the whole face, improving hydration and giving skin that plumped, dewy quality. A Hydrafacial works on the surface, cleansing, gently exfoliating and infusing the skin with serums in one session, which is why it is so popular before an event. It offers an instant, no-downtime glow, and it pairs well with the injectable treatments that work deeper down.

Resurfacing for tone and texture

Where sun damage, pigmentation and rough texture are part of the picture, energy-based treatments come into their own. Options such as BBL Hero and MOXI target uneven tone and dullness, while Morpheus8 and the Secret Pro CO2 laser go further to firm and resurface. These are more of a reset than a refresh, and they suit patients who want to address years of accumulated damage rather than just add hydration.

Building a plan for mature skin

The reason results like Louise's look natural is that they are rarely the product of one treatment done in isolation. Good practice starts with an honest assessment of your skin, your medical history and what you actually want to change. Sometimes the answer is hydration. Sometimes it is tone. Often it is a combination, delivered in a sensible order over a few months.

For skin in the sixties and beyond, the priorities usually centre on hydration, collagen support and evening out tone, with a light touch on anything that adds volume. The aim is to have people say you look well, not to have them ask what you have had done. A typical plan might begin with Profhilo or polynucleotides to rebuild skin quality, layer in a resurfacing treatment if pigmentation or texture needs attention, and be supported at home with medical-grade skincare, especially a good vitamin C, a retinoid if tolerated and daily SPF.

Skincare is not an afterthought here. The results of any in-clinic treatment last longer and look better when the skin is being looked after every day. A consistent routine with proven active ingredients does a surprising amount of the heavy lifting between appointments.

What a session is really like

People often expect these treatments to be more of an ordeal than they are. Most skin-quality treatments are quick, carried out under numbing cream where needed, and done in a lunchtime slot. Profhilo involves only a handful of injection points per side and takes a few minutes once the skin is prepped. You may have small raised bumps at the injection sites for a few hours as the product settles, and occasionally a little bruising, but most people are back to normal activities the same day.

Polynucleotides and skin boosters involve more micro-injections across the area, so there can be some redness, tiny bumps or mild swelling that settles within a day or two. A Hydrafacial has essentially no downtime, and you can wear makeup and head straight out afterwards. Resurfacing treatments are the exception. Depending on the intensity, expect some redness and flaking for several days, which is worth planning around a quiet week.

The general aftercare is straightforward. Keep the area clean, avoid heavy exercise, saunas and alcohol for the first day or so, skip active skincare ingredients for a couple of days, and be diligent with sun protection while the skin recovers and rebuilds. Your practitioner will give you specific guidance for whatever you have had done.

The confidence that comes with feeling like yourself

It would be easy to focus only on the science, but Louise's reaction points to something we see all the time. The change she valued most was not a measurement. It was waking up feeling wonderful, feeling great with just lipstick on, feeling confident again. That emotional shift is a genuine clinical outcome, not a soft extra.

There is a real difference between looking younger and feeling like yourself. Feeling tired and dragged in the mornings wears on your confidence in a way that is hard to explain to anyone who has not felt it. When your skin looks rested and even, you stop thinking about it. You stop reaching for concealer out of habit. You get on with your day. That freedom, the not-having-to-think-about-it, is often the thing people are really seeking when they book a consultation, even if they arrive talking about a specific line or a bit of dullness.

This is also why doctor-led, unhurried treatment matters. The goal is never to change who you are. It is to help your face reflect how you feel on your best days, and to do it in a way that still looks entirely like you.

Common questions about restoring glow to mature skin

Am I too old to start these treatments?

No. Skin responds to good hydration and collagen stimulation at any age. In fact, mature skin often shows some of the most rewarding improvements, because there is more room to restore hydration and quality that has been lost over the years. The plan simply needs to be tailored to what your skin needs now.

How soon will I see a difference?

It depends on the treatment. A Hydrafacial gives an immediate freshness on the day. Profhilo usually starts to show a glow within one to two weeks, with the firming benefit building over two to three months. Polynucleotides work more gradually over several weeks and continue improving. For most skin-quality treatments, the best results come from completing the recommended course rather than judging after a single session.

Will it look obvious that I have had something done?

The treatments that create glow work on the health and hydration of the skin rather than reshaping the face, so the result tends to read as looking well and rested rather than altered. Done carefully, the people around you are more likely to say you look refreshed than to guess why.

How long do the results last?

This varies by treatment. Profhilo results typically last around six months before a maintenance session is suggested. Polynucleotides can last several months to the better part of a year. Resurfacing results depend on how well you protect your skin afterwards, which is where daily SPF really earns its place. Ongoing skincare and periodic top-ups keep the effect going.

Can these treatments be combined?

Yes, and they often are. Layering hydration, regeneration and resurfacing in a sensible sequence usually gives a better and more natural result than relying on any one thing. Your practitioner will advise on timing so that treatments complement rather than clash with each other.
