Will I Still Be Able to Move My Face After Anti-Wrinkle Treatment?
"Will I still be able to move my face?" As the founder of Wellface, this is the question I'm asked more than any other. Not just in the clinic, but at dinner parties, at the school gates, wherever the subject of anti-wrinkle treatment comes up. And I love it, because it gets to the heart of what good treatment actually is.
Here is the part that surprises people. I've had a fair amount of anti-wrinkle treatment on my own face, not a token amount, and most people cannot tell. My forehead still lifts. My eyes still crinkle when I laugh. That is the whole point. When treatment is done well, no one should be able to spot it, and you should still look like yourself on a good day rather than a waxwork version of yourself.
The fear of the frozen face is one of the most common reasons people put off treatment for years. It is a completely fair worry. We have all seen the tight, startled foreheads and the smiles that do not quite reach the eyes. But that look is not what anti-wrinkle injections are supposed to do. It is what happens when the dose is wrong or the placement is careless. Get those two things right, and the result is soft, subtle and expressive.
How anti-wrinkle injections actually work
Anti-wrinkle treatment uses a purified protein, most commonly the type sold under the brand name Botox, to temporarily calm the specific muscles that create expression lines. When you frown, raise your brows or squint into the sun, small muscles contract and the skin above them folds. Do that thousands of times over the years and those folds start to settle in as lines that stay put even when your face is at rest.
The injection works by softening the signal from nerve to muscle in the treated area. The muscle relaxes, it stops tugging the skin into a crease, and over the following weeks the skin smooths out. Crucially, it only affects the muscles that are actually treated. It does not spread across your whole face and it does not switch off your ability to express yourself.
This is where the frozen myth falls apart. I explain it as a question of degree, not on or off. A skilled practitioner does not aim to eliminate all movement. The goal is to reduce the strength of the muscles that etch lines while leaving enough natural motion that your face still reads as warm and alive. Relax the right muscles, preserve the ones that carry your expression, and you get someone who looks rested rather than done.
Dynamic lines versus static lines
It helps to understand the difference between the two kinds of line. Dynamic lines appear when you move, the creases you see when you actually frown or lift your brows. Static lines are the ones that remain when your face is relaxed. Anti-wrinkle treatment is at its best on dynamic lines, softening them and stopping them from deepening. Lines that have already become static and etched in can improve too, though they may also benefit from other approaches such as Profhilo, skin boosters or resurfacing to work on the skin quality itself.
Why some faces look frozen and yours does not have to
Almost every unnatural result comes down to the same handful of causes, and none of them are the fault of the treatment. Too much product is the big one. If a muscle is completely switched off rather than gently calmed, it stops moving altogether, and that reads as stiff and artificial. Poor placement is the other culprit, injecting the wrong spot or ignoring how one muscle balances against another can drop a brow, raise it into a strange arch, or leave the face looking oddly asymmetrical.
The fix for both is not a secret. It is judgement. Facial muscles vary enormously from one person to the next. Someone with a strong forehead muscle that powers a big, expressive brow lift needs a very different plan from someone whose muscles are naturally lighter. Age, skin thickness, the shape of your brow and the way you habitually move your face all feed into the decision. This is why I'm so firm that the practitioner matters more than anything else.
It comes down to this every single time. The right practitioner plans where the treatment goes and chooses the dose to match your face. That planning is the difference between a result that looks natural and one that looks obvious. A set number of units copied from someone else, or a one-size-fits-all approach, is one of the quickest ways to end up looking overdone.
Less is genuinely more
There is a reason experienced injectors tend to start conservatively. It is always easier to add a little more at a review appointment than to wait out an over-treated result. Softer, carefully placed dosing keeps movement in the face while still calming the muscles that make lines. For people who want the most subtle outcome, a lighter-touch approach is often the sensible starting point, and the dose can be built up gradually once your practitioner sees how your muscles respond.
What a treatment at Wellface involves
Everything starts with a consultation. Before anyone picks up a needle, your doctor will watch your face move. Raise your brows, frown, squeeze your eyes shut, smile. This is how they map which muscles are strong, which are lighter, and where a line is forming. That short assessment shapes the entire plan, because the aim is to treat the muscles that create lines and leave the ones that carry your character.
The treatment itself is quick, usually somewhere in the region of ten to fifteen minutes. The needles used are very fine, and most people describe the sensation as a brief pinch or a scratch rather than anything they would call painful. There is no anaesthetic needed for the vast majority of patients. You can walk in on a lunch break and get back to your day, which is part of why anti-wrinkle treatment remains so popular.
The common areas are the forehead, the frown lines between the brows, known as the glabella, and the crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Beyond those, treatment can soften bunny lines on the nose, a gummy smile, downturned mouth corners, a dimpled chin, and it can be used to slim the jaw or ease teeth grinding. Each area is treated according to what your face needs rather than a fixed template.
When you will see results
Anti-wrinkle treatment is not instant, and that is normal. Most people start to notice a softening within three to five days, with the full effect settling by around two weeks. That two-week mark is also the ideal time for a review. My team and I at Wellface can check how your muscles have responded and top up gently if a small adjustment would improve the balance. This staged approach is one of the best safeguards against overdoing it.
Results typically last around three to four months, though this varies with your muscle strength and metabolism. Some people find their movement returns a little sooner, others hold onto results for longer. When the effect wears off, your muscles simply return to their natural activity and your lines gradually come back. They do not come back worse. That so-called rebound is another myth.
Aftercare and looking after your results
Aftercare is refreshingly simple. For the rest of the day, stay upright and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas, as you do not want to move the product away from where it was carefully placed. It is sensible to skip strenuous exercise, hot yoga, saunas and steam rooms for around twenty-four hours, and to hold off on facials or other treatments in the treated zones for a short while. Your doctor will give you specific guidance on the day.
A little redness or a few small bumps at the injection points are common and usually fade within an hour or two. The occasional small bruise can happen, as it can with any injection, and is easily covered with makeup. There is no meaningful downtime, which is exactly why so many patients book their appointment around a normal working day.
Beyond the injections themselves, the most reliable way to keep your results looking natural is a consistent maintenance schedule and a sensible skincare routine. Many people find quarterly appointments fit neatly with the lifespan of the treatment, and each visit gives your doctor the chance to fine-tune the dose based on how your face has changed since the last time.
Common questions about natural anti-wrinkle results
Will people be able to tell I have had it done?
When the dose and placement are right, the honest answer is usually no. The most common reaction is that you look well rested, that you have been on holiday, or that you have simply had a good night's sleep. My own face is the example I give, plenty of treatment, and yet people struggle to see it. Subtlety is a sign of skill, not a compromise.
Does anti-wrinkle treatment hurt?
Very little. The needles are extremely fine and the injections are shallow, so most people feel a quick pinch and little else. The whole appointment is over in minutes, and there is no lingering discomfort afterwards. If you are anxious about needles, mention it at your consultation and your doctor will talk you through each step.
Is it safe, and can it go wrong?
Anti-wrinkle treatment has a long track record of safe use in aesthetics when carried out by a trained medical professional. The doses used cosmetically are extremely small and highly targeted. Most unnatural outcomes, a dropped brow or a stiff look, come down to technique rather than the product, and they are temporary in any case. Choosing a doctor-led clinic where the practitioner understands facial anatomy is the single biggest thing you can do to keep your treatment safe and natural.
How much will I be able to move afterwards?
You should still be able to raise your brows, look surprised and smile fully. What changes is that the deep creasing softens. Lines ease while your ability to communicate with your face stays intact. If your goal is to keep as much movement as possible, say so at your consultation, and your doctor can plan a lighter dose to match.
Am I too young or too old to start?
There is no single right age. Some people begin in their late twenties or thirties to soften early dynamic lines before they become etched in, an approach often called preventative. Others start later to address lines that have already settled. Your doctor will assess your face and be honest about whether anti-wrinkle treatment is the right option for you, or whether something else would serve you better.
Come and talk it through with a doctor at Wellface
If the fear of a frozen face has been holding you back, the best next step is a conversation rather than a commitment.
