Collagen biostimulators
Also known as collagen stimulators or collagen boosters, these treatments ask your skin to rebuild its own support. See how Sculptra®, HArmonyCa, Radiesse® and Morpheus8 work, then explore the one that suits you.
Treatments that ask your skin to do the work
A collagen biostimulator is a treatment that prompts your body to make more of its own collagen. Sculptra, HArmonyCa and Radiesse do this by injection, and Morpheus8 does it with microneedling and radiofrequency. You may also see the words collagen stimulator and collagen booster, which describe the same broad idea. The product gives your skin a signal, your skin responds, and the change develops over the months that follow as new collagen forms.
Because the improvement comes largely from your own tissue, it can look gradual and in keeping with your face. Dr Yasmin Tayeb, our founder, credits this group of treatments with moving patients away from overfilling and towards natural rejuvenation. She talks about them as healthy maintenance and ageing gracefully.
Why collagen declines
Collagen and elastin give skin its firmness and spring. Galderma, the maker of Sculptra, notes that collagen falls by around 1% a year from our twenties. One year is invisible, but the loss adds up over decades, and the skin’s own renewal slows at the same time.
Other things can hasten it or add to it:
- Sun exposure, pollution and lifestyle, which speed up the natural slowdown
- A thinning surface layer, which can show as less radiance and a rougher texture
- Lost support in the deepest layer, which shows as volume loss and, over time, sagging
- Rapid weight loss, which can reduce the fat pads that keep a face looking full
How a biostimulator differs from filler
Both are injected, and both can sit in the same plan, but they do different jobs.
Dermal filler
Hyaluronic acid that adds volume exactly where it is placed. The change shows on the day, it suits shaping a specific point, and it can be dissolved if needed. Read more about dermal fillers at Wellface.
Collagen stimulator
A material that prompts your skin to build new collagen over time. The aim is firmness, support and skin quality across an area rather than a change at one point. How much you see on the day depends on the product.
Sculptra, HArmonyCa, Radiesse and Morpheus8
Our doctors plan and inject the three injectables, in an appointment of about 45 minutes. Morpheus8 is carried out by our expert practitioners, guided by our doctors, in a session of 30 to 60 minutes.
Sculptra®
Poly-L-lactic acid, made by Galderma. It adds no instant volume. Instead it stimulates collagen and elastin across all three skin layers over a short course, so firmness and fullness build gradually.
HArmonyCa
A hybrid of hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. The hyaluronic acid gives an immediate lift in areas like the cheeks and jawline, then the calcium hydroxylapatite stimulates collagen over the following weeks.
Radiesse®
Calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a gel, made by Merz Aesthetics. The gel gives some immediate support, then the microspheres stimulate collagen and elastin over the months that follow.
Morpheus8
Microneedling with radiofrequency, which stimulates collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. Many clients notice improvement after their first session, with the full result building across a course of three. Available in Cobham and Wimbledon.
Four questions to compare the injectables
Morpheus8 works differently, so it sits outside this comparison: many clients notice improvement after their first session, and results can last up to a year or longer.
Will I see a change on the day?
With HArmonyCa, yes: the hyaluronic acid gives an immediate lift. With Radiesse, you may notice some support. With Sculptra, no: any early fullness is fluid and swelling, which settles.
When does the collagen show?
HArmonyCa improves over several weeks. Radiesse is usually visible from around three months and continues through six months and beyond. Sculptra develops across its course, and in Galderma’s studies type I collagen rose by 66.5% at three months.
How long might it last?
Galderma reports Sculptra results lasting more than two years. Dr Yasmin describes Radiesse as lasting well over a year before a top-up is considered. With HArmonyCa it varies by area and person. Individual results vary with all three.
What are the risks?
Sculptra and Radiesse are not hyaluronic acid, so neither can be dissolved like a filler, which is why careful planning matters. Bruising, swelling and tenderness can occur, and as with any facial injectable, rare vascular complications are possible.
Where each one is used
Our area guides go into more detail. Morpheus8 treats the face, neck and body.
Hollow cheeks and a gaunt face
Volume lost with age or after rapid weight loss, where a gradual rebuild across the face can suit.
Sculptra for the faceArms, thighs and buttocks
Galderma lists these body areas for firmness, smoothness and contour.
Sculptra for the bodyThe décolletage
Crepey lines and sun-aged skin across the chest, where the focus is firmness and smoothness.
Sculptra for the décolletageCheeks, folds and jawline
Merz lists the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and jawline for Radiesse®+.
Radiesse for the faceThe neck
Dr Yasmin uses Radiesse for a crepey neck in her clinical practice, although Merz’s UK page does not list the area. Your doctor decides case by case.
Radiesse and the neckLift in the lower face
Lost volume in the cheeks and jawline, where an immediate lift is part of the goal.
HArmonyCa for lift and firmnessThe thinking behind biostimulators
You do not have to choose alone
Most people arrive with a concern rather than a product in mind, and that is the best place to start. At consultation a doctor looks at your face, your skin and your history, checks whether a collagen stimulator is suitable for you, and recommends what fits your goals rather than what is newest. If another route would serve you better, such as Morpheus8 for skin tightening or a skin booster for hydration, you will hear that first.
Many plans combine treatments. HArmonyCa pairs with dermal fillers, and Radiesse is often combined with a skin booster. If you are still weighing things up, our guide to facial volume and definition is a good next read.
Pricing
Each treatment is priced differently because each is planned differently. Your plan and price are confirmed at consultation, before anything begins.
Prices include VAT. Additional Sculptra vials are discounted from the fourth. Consultation + review included at every clinic. Morpheus8 is available in Cobham and Wimbledon.
Frequently asked questions
A treatment that prompts your skin to produce more of its own collagen over time. At Wellface the options are Sculptra, HArmonyCa and Radiesse, each planned and injected by a doctor, and Morpheus8, which uses microneedling and radiofrequency.
In everyday use, yes. Biostimulator is the clinical term and collagen booster is the phrase many people search for. Both describe treatments that prompt your skin to build collagen rather than relying only on added volume.
No. Skin boosters are mainly about hydration and glow, while collagen stimulators are about firmness and support. The two can sit well together, which is why Radiesse is often paired with a skin booster.
There is no single best option. HArmonyCa gives a visible lift on the day, Sculptra builds gradually across an area, Radiesse offers some support now with collagen to follow, and Morpheus8 works on firmness and texture across a course. Your doctor recommends what fits your face and your goals.
HArmonyCa gives an immediate lift and improves over several weeks. Radiesse may give some support straight away, with collagen-related change usually visible from around three months. Sculptra builds gradually over its course. With Morpheus8, many clients notice improvement after their first session, with the full result building across a course of three.
HArmonyCa is £1,100 per treatment. Sculptra is £500 per vial, with additional vials discounted from the fourth. Radiesse with a skin booster is £1,100, and your doctor confirms any other plan at consultation. Morpheus8 for the face and neck is £950 per session, or £2,450 for a course of three.
Often, yes. Many plans combine a collagen stimulator with dermal fillers, skin boosters or energy-based treatments such as Morpheus8. Your doctor plans the order and timing with you.
Our doctors plan and inject Sculptra, HArmonyCa and Radiesse at our Cobham, Esher and Wimbledon clinics. Morpheus8 is carried out by our expert practitioners, guided by our doctors, in Cobham and Wimbledon. You have a consultation first, and a review is included.
