Dermal Fillers Explained: How They Restore Volume and Refresh the Face
Dermal fillers are one of the most requested treatments in facial aesthetics, yet they are widely misunderstood. In this guide the doctors at Wellface explain what fillers actually are, how hyaluronic acid restores lost volume, where on the face they work best, when you will see results and how long they last, along with honest advice on downtime and planning around special occasions.

So the second most popular treatment in facial aesthetics is fillers. What are fillers? Fillers are hyaluronic acid and you can get them in different consistencies from a very light thin and a filler to a very thick heavy filler.
Filler treatment will show straight away so it's very different to Botox which shows up two weeks later when you start to see the results. Filler results will show straight away and that's quite a good thing because then your practitioner can inject the filler and say to you I've done this side of your face and I'm going to now use the second half of the syringe and do the other side. Are you happy?
Shall we carry on or shall we do a little bit more? And it gives you that feedback straight away in the appointment and to get the best look that you want. Obviously with all treatments with facial aesthetics or all treatments with injectables there can be some bruising lumps and bumps and some discomfort after the treatment.
So if you are planning a really special get together with your friends after lockdown then I would advise doing that two weeks later once everything has settled down and hopefully you've been offered a review appointment with your practitioner to make sure everything is as it should be before your special occasion and your big bang after lockdown. So first of all like I said fillers you can see the results straight away. They usually last, different types of fillers can last between six months to a year and a half and and I'll just run through the main different ways or places that you can put fillers.
So the most common filler I would say is lip fillers and that is just to plump the lips and make them look a little bit fuller for older patients making them look fuller can make your lips look a little bit younger your mouth look a little bit younger. If you have asymmetry then that can be addressed with lip fillers. If you have an imbalance between the top lip and the bottom lip again that can be addressed with lip fillers.
Okay other areas to use fillers or most common areas to use fillers. The most popular one of the other most popular ways is to do cheek fillers. Now cheek fillers is a great way to address lots of lots of different issues happening in the face through aging.
So the first location where aging starts is in the cheeks or in the mid face. You may feel that you're seeing the aging through sunken eyes, darker circles, lines coming from your nose to your mouth and from your mouth down to your chin and even though that's what you can see in terms of the aging lines the aging has actually started around the cheeks and that's why everything is being pulled down. So if you can address the volume loss by reinserting the volume in the cheeks you will actually be supporting the eye area and making the eyes look healthier and younger and you will be supporting the skin lower down in the face by giving that little bit of lift and giving a more natural look to reduce the lines lower down in the face.
It doesn't mean that the lines are all going to completely go away but by putting the volume where it was lost you will get a much more sculpted look and a much more natural look and then any other small areas you can go in with a thinner filler around the marionette lines which is lower down here or the nasolabial lines which is from here to here. So that's something I would consider and that's really the most important consultation I would have with my patients when they say I feel like my face is looking really aged I can see these new lines and I want to have fillers done. I would start with their cheeks before filling the lines further down.
One of the other areas that you can do fillers to get a little bit more sculpt and shape would be the chin if you feel you have a very retreated chin so your chin is very further back or if you feel you have a very small chin and you feel like you don't like your profile by putting a little bit of filler in the chin you can actually improve the profile balance the face and also improve any jowl area if you feel like your jowls are looking much lower down and your lower face is looking quite heavy and you can incorporate chin fillers with jawline fillers to get a lovely sculpted look as well. So that's really a whirlwind stop about fillers and I will move on to my next video now. See you in a bit.
